Okay so I finally decided to document my progress on my WRX. I bought the car in Nov of 03. After I racked up 12k in 8 months, it was time for new tires and brakes since I used to live up in the hills... enough said. I quickly upgraded the brakes with hawk hps pads and powerslot rotors and put on some nice all season BFG's. Then from there the mod addiction happened, I soon had a borla cbe, gutted my stock uppipe, had my td04 sent out to deadbolt for some PnP work. Soon after that I bought my APv1, APS TBE, installed defi gauges (boost, egt and oil pressure). I then started to tune my own car and bought cobbs streetuner software to assist me with this. In the spring of 2008 I bought Gerald's Deadbolt 18g turbo and Helix 660 injectors. Around October I finally got to installing the injectors, fp and turbo and I brought my car down to EFI for some tuning. Once my car was on the dyno Chris quickly found that one of my injectors had just started leaking (my fault), so EFI changed out the torn O ring. Chris had my car tuned in 3 pulls! Final numbers were 275whp and 258 tq @19psi. I was very excited considering my previous setup had put down 229whp and 232tq back on Aug 8th at EFI's dyno day. Over the winter of 2009 I upgraded from my STI TMIC to an APS 525 FMIC, APS 65mm CAI, and in the spring I finally upgraded my suspension to BC BR coilovers.
Summer of 2011 made for some big changes. I dropped in a built EJ257, 05 STi 6 speed with 42k on it, 05 STi R180, 04 STi hubs but kept my 18g thinking I would make some serious TQ. Well my turbo doesn't like to flow above 18-19 psi and falls on it face so I didn't make the power I had hoped for. I still was able to make 297 whp and 320 ft lbs (see dyno chart below). Come Spring of 2012 I plan on dropping in a Blouch 2.5 XTR and going back down to EFI for a retune.
Engine:
Big thanks to the guys at Larry's Machine shop for building a fantastic motor. Thank you to Subimods for helping me out with parts and getting the heads assembled. And finally Thank you to EFI for a great tune and customer support. Once I get my bigger turbo I will be back down for a retune!

last weekend I installed una's sexy rearend from TIC, transmission crossmember bushings, TIC pivot bushing, Kartboy shifter bushing and Kartboy rear shifter bushing.
Hopefully tonight I can get the steering rack bushing's in. Also when I went to install the rear subframe bolts the holes were completely rusted. So my buddy had a 12mm x1.25 tap that I was able to use to clean the holes out.
Here are a few pics of the rear bushing install. I should have taken more but my hands were dirty and I really didn't want to get grease on my new camera. http://forum.ctsub.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Well I went to EFI yesterday for my tune. Chris found that my wastegate actuator was not letting me hold more then 20psi. :( He did some quick diagnosing and found that I have a 9psi wastegate. So I contacted subimods and they are getting me a forged 14psi wastegate actuator. This in conjunction with my GM BCS should get me over the 20psi so I can make some more power!
At 20 psi I made 283hp and 260 tq, but my wastegate was slow to bring on boost (4400) and was not holding it well up top at all. Hopefully the new wastegate actuator will bring the power on sooner and help hold it up top.
Once I get my new wastegate, I will be heading back down to EFI to get tuned!

Nope. Decided I am fine with the power levels right now. Honestly the motor has 99,700 on it and it has been modded since 5k. I am kinda happy that the turbo isn't pushing full boost to redline. When the day finally comes to replace my motor, a built 2.5 by EFI will do the trick and I will get a new bigger turbo at that point and time.
In the meantime I need to save up for sways, endlinks and a timing belt replacement.

um it might be alittle bit easier, but honestly I didn't think they were really all that bad to do. I loosened up the steering linkage and hard lines and had enough room to get the new bushings in place. oh and don't forget the lube on the bushings!

I would say do it yourself! All you need is some time and patience. There was nothing really hard about the install. I spent probably 6hrs total cutting and test fitting to get them right. I was taking my sweet time however and the halo's took some time and work to get in there.
Now I think I am going to swap the halo shrouds out for plain old E46 shrouds. I think the halo's are taking away from the E46 hotness!

I used a DIY thread a long time ago when I cleared my lights. Other then that it was just a matter of getting in there and figuring out how to cut up the reflective base to fit the projector housing. It really wasn't that bad to do. I will probably be swapping out my shrouds in the next week, when I take my headlights apart I will snap some more pics so you can see what I did in there.

24 nice choice.
22 in the back seems a bit much.
I ponder oem went 50% smaller than what real driving demands.
comes with 17? could go all the way to 25...
I figured this with a very old one at 15, needing 22... and then the legacy also stepped up...
could be an algorithm to this. I'd love to see this summed up in a paragraph. these sway bars swap all around for 25 years... a 24 no doubt needs to spend on aftermarket special.

Its been a while since my last update. Winter plans include timing belt, water pump, idler pulleys, install front sway bar, kartboy endlinks, weld internal wastegate closed on 18g, 38mm tial mvs EWG routed back into DP and GT spec UEL headers. Then of course a new EFI tune.
Here are some pics from the work on the car today.

And now for some turbo shots. I think the wastegate flapper doesn't seal correctly. When I close it by hand you can hear it doesn't sound like it closes totally flat. In the third pic you can see at around 7 oclock it looks like exhaust escapes. Solution will be to weld the wastegate closed.

One of these days I need to do the timing belt. Are you going to pick up a kit, or individual parts?
Berge56
01-13-2011, 03:02 PM
well the only hard data I have found is that without them your intake manifold gets so hot that you can burn your hand if you touch it. With the spacers the intake manifold is cool to the touch.
As for the timing belt, I plan on picking up a kit from subimods. :D

From what I understand around 1800. You just need to make sure its an 08+ STi shortblock. I checked the price of the nitrate crank vs old style and they are the same price.

which deadbolt? I is confused??
Deadbolt 18G
(590cfm, 39 lb/min, 275-390whp, Bolt-On)
No longer manufactured.
Expect to achieve full boost with the proper mods and a quality tune between 3400-3900rpms. 2002-2005 WRX owners will need fuel upgrades for this turbocharger and proper engine management is highly recommended for all vehicles.
Deadbolt 20G
(640cfm, 44.5 lb/min, 340-440whp, Bolt-On)
No longer manufactured.
Deadbolt Superzilla
(SZ49, 690cfm, 49 lb/min, 350-490whp, Bolt-On)
(SZ53, 735cfm, 53 lb/min, 380-530whp, Bolt-On)
(SZ55, 770cfm, 55 lb/min, 400-550whp, Bolt-On)
(SZ57, 800cfm, 57 lb/min, 420-570whp, Bolt-On)
(SZ60, 60 lb/min, 450-600whp, Requires Modification)
(SZ65, 60 lb/min, 450-625whp, Requires Modification)
No longer manufactured.
Fuel upgrades for these turbochargers and proper engine management should be considered necessary for all vehicles.

you'll need 47lbs/min or greater with an EWG to make 300+ with your set up
I'm guessing your turbo is more than 47lbs/min if you made 287whp already once?
How do you not what kind of turbo you have?

The rearend I had is good for 04-05. I chose 05 because research had shown that the 05 had better synchros, center diff and the best power split from front to rear.
