View Full Version : complete suspension tune in order
Ok so along with getting a new clutch/flywheel I think it is time i upgraded the much neglected suspension of my RS. I was thinking of going with the following setup;
Front swaybar: 22mm whiteline
Rear swaybar: 25mm perrin
f/r endlinks: whiteline solid links
whitline control arm brace
was thinking maybe an H brace also....still haven't found strut bars i like yet but I am still looking. I think this will drastically change the handling so I am curious to see what others have done or if anyone has used the parts I am talking about.
from what I understand I need to use the non turbo front sways and any impreza rear sway 02+..endlinks are same for all models I believe but correct me if I am wrong.

Why not go with an adjustable whiteline RSB? 22-24mm adjustable is really plenty to start. Or step it up a notch. Any RSB that fits WRX (non-STI) will work. You are correct on the FSB.
From what I know, Perrin designs their swaybars to work specifically with their own endlinks.
Are you on stock springs/struts?

+1 Cobb as well makes a very nice set of sways. I'm going with a double 25mm adjustable set for the wagon. Gotta keep all the nose heavy and rearwheel bias in check.

If you're ever gonna autocross you may not want to get that because I think it would put you in a much higher class.
And, from what I have seen, Perrin swaybars work fine with stock and aftermarket endlinks. While you're doing suspension tweaks, upgrade the steering rack bushings, you will thank me.
^^ yes indeed sir, I am going to be doing bushings all around, and for now I am on stock springs/struts...I was really thinking about going with some coilovers...maybe stance GR+....but if you lived in RI and driven down any of our lovely roads you would know why I haven't gotten a set just yet
as for the RSB I want to get a bigger sized one so the rear is extra stiff, the perrin 25 mm is adjustable so I am guessing it can go to 24 or 23mm also.

Just say no to Perrin. Seriously...
Also no to Coilovers. I amgetting close to taking the SVX off coilovers cause they drive me nuts! It takes big money to put together a coilovers package that works for you. Springs ans sways/endlinks and the bushings and you are about 20 billion times better.
basically everything else is going to be whiteline, I just wanted the larger rear sway, so i can slide about when needed :)
On another note I just got my alignment re-done for free at the the dreaded town fair tire today and my right caster is still not to spec...so right now I am suspecting the control arm or endlink bushings got squished when i got into that fender bender so I am grabbing some energy bushings for the control arms...seriously nothing looks bent or anything...but what the hell better just replace the entire front suspension just to be sure!
as far as coilovers I plan on doing rally x anyway so I think I am going to get some whitline top mounts and a good strut/spring combo later....don't think i can afford an ENTIRE new suspension setup just yet...but soon :D

Tokico D-Spec Struts = Awesome.
I always look at the stance coilovers I want them so bad....if I moved out of NE (not gonna happen) I would get a set....Tokico struts are pretty good, I have a set of blues on my 240 but I might get a set of blisteins for the subaru...I am completely undecided on the struts yet...my stockers still got plenty of bounce in em though, before me my car was only driven y a 60 year old man so there was not play on them. Still fresh lol
any one ever use one of those ground control kits that kind of turns a strut into a coilover..kinda? they look to be semi adjustable too....
As of immediately I am only getting some bushings for the front control arms ( still cant tell if I need one or 2 of these kits as it doesn't say) an FSB and f/r endlinks and a brace for the front control arms....this will leave the ass end probably too loose and I will want to get an RSB and some trailing arm bushings, shifter bushings and maybe some for the steering rack. Last mod before I get into the motor will be the springs/struts or coilovers...I need to do something soon before tumbleweeds start going through my build thread :)

If you're going to start modding suspension its a good idea to have a bigger RSB on the list. Stock RSB on your model/year is a pathetic 13mm. But hey, if you like sloppy ass...

Lets specify in the context of cars... In other situations...
lol, I do want to get an RSB I just wanted to know what's wrong with perrin? I wanted to get the big 25mm rsb and the stout mounts...so in fact I like an extra tight ass lol...just was wondering why you are trying to "say no to perrin"
here was the 2 kits I was looking at, one comes with the HD mounts

Avoid Perrin as i said before. Especially if mixxing parts. Perrin SUCKS for fitment and even worse with other brands.

Same can be said about Whiteline though. Kartboy makes a special spacer kit for WL's FSB's for 08+ because their bar is shorter than everyone elses.

i got whiteline front endlinks and they went on great..no issues at all.

There hasn't ever been an issue with Whiteline front endlinks. As far as the Perrin RSB, the issue was part to do with quality control and part to do with people using shorter endlinks in combination with the bar. If you get the Perring bar get their HD mounts, it'll be worth the extra cash. The mounts can slide a bit front or back to keep any contact between the bar and the lateral link from happening.
It's always nice getting shiny new parts. I think I need to get something for myself.
yeah I have heard there endlinks are terrible fitment wise, I heard many people say that the perrin swaybars are good though....hmmm I really wanted to get a bigger sway but I guess 1mm doesn't really matter too too much....or does it. If I was going to get the perrin 255mm rsb with the HD mounts it is still less than the whiteline RSB just by itself
has anyone actually used the perrin 25mm rsb with whiteline links...I need to make a descision soon I want to order these on friday... I really thought I had my mind made up and then Dave tells me perrin is **** lol

seriously though under $200 for the hd mounts and the bar/hardware...that is a good deal..the whiteline bar w/ bushings is the EXACT same price
If I do get this and it doesn't fit properly I am sure I will get a big fat "I told you so" lol

Why not go Cobb? Like I said I'm going for the 25MM adustable STi kit that'll give me I think it was 70% to 115% to 150% settings versus stock STi. Cost is well below the single Whiteline 27mm.

oh, and 25mm+ will clunk in the rear on bumps and in the front on turns, just saying
I like the cobb bars, they don't make a front cobb bar for the non turbo GD...maybe one for a GC would fit..not too sure on that though. I do want a stiff rear end but I don't want it to clunk around either...hmmm seems like I have some thinking to do over the next few days

Depending on the bushings. I forget who it was but I think it was Cobb runs a self lubricating bushing or something. I'll have check back up on that stuff for when I order mine.
what exactly gets in the way of me putting a wrx swaybar on? is the crossmember? or the exhaust manifold? keep in mind I am going to have the wrx header.

The swaybar for ye turbo models are notched for the up pipe as well as clearing the crossmember and I think maybe one other part. But in short yes the exhause and the crossmember.

Actually, I thought the N/A FSB is bent specifically to go over exhaust piping. Or is it both?

Best way to fond out I guess is to ask. I'll ask Kirill the next time I email about a suspension order for my car from RallySportDirrect. That is if I can't get a better package price from of the the forum vendors.
ok well I have decided to on everything I wante except the rear swaybar, I am leaning towards cobb now, just because their bar is cheaper than perrins and we never hear complaints about cobb's stuff....I also found a set of collars to go on either side of both bushings, since the cobb bar is also 25mm if it is clunking around I will order some of these collars and that should stop it from moving around. All in all I am going to be getting:
whiteline 22mm adjustable FSB
whitelinte f/r solid endlings
whiteline steering rack bushings
whiteline front LCA bushings
cobb or perrin 25mm adjustable RSB w/ HD mounts
I think this is going to completely change the handling characteristics of my car completely. I am sure it will be a good setup...althought the blue cobb bar with throw off my color scheme I am sure it will grow on me, especially if it effects the car how I think it will.
next on the list is struts and springs or coilovers, I hear whitline's group 4s are good streetable coilovers...I just want something that can stand up to RI's pot hole ritteled roads

Isn't there a Cobb sway kit for the GDB RS? It should be cheaper and come with nearly everything.

We recommend Whiteline for most all suspension bits. Their build quality is very high an we have had great results on the cars we have installed them on. We are an official Whiteline dealer, but also sell COBB and Perrin, etc, so it is certainly an unbiased opinion.
I was looking at whiteline's RSB it was an adj 24mm...it doesn't come with the HD mounts though, RSB alone was $195 and the mounts are another $140...too rich for my blood although I am sure they are nice....everyone seems to be saying cobb>perrin though...so I think my mind is made up. I will just get some whiteline rear control arms eventually to finish off my suspensioin mods

NA swaybar with correct bushing will work with turbo xmember, i know this because i i ran a whiteline 22fsb with my gc sti xmember. Without the extenedd bushings it will rub and scuff the paint, and over a period of aggressive driving the xmember will adapt to the bumping of the sway bar. Thus, you dont need to buy a turbo swaybar.

I know I really can't wait!! I haven gotten to do anything with my car since may of last year when I did my brakes...at least I am upgrading in the correct order lol even if it is against my will to do power last! it was supposed to be first!!

well I have an NA x member so I am getting the NA bar it should be fine with the bushings they provide.
I only wish cobb made a front swaybar that works with the NA GD impreza...even the cobb RSB I wanted is sold out at oakos...they say it is also discontinued. Does anyone know where someone might have one in stock still?
not 100% on this yet but it looks like all the RS swaybars from 98-04 use the same swaybars. I am going to need to find someone to confirm this.
Mdungleman, what swaybar are you using right now? I know you have a 2.5i, did you need to get a model specific bar or just use an RS sway?
mdungelman

I've got the Rallitek F/R setup. According to them, 93-07 n/a impreza all use the same bar.
yep thats what I though, and I know yours has the same fittiment as mine w/ wrx headers, whiteline also makes a 27mm bar for the front...lol I think that might be TOO much for a DD though
just ordered some cobb rear end links, trying to find somewhere that has the cobb RSB in stock...and i think i am going with the adj 24mm whiteline FSB. waiting to hear back from oakos automotive :D
