well today i made the long haul to brooklyn, holy hell what a long day, left at 9am got back tonight a little after 8pm.
as some of you know via my other thread. i drive a 96 legacy wagon, and my goal is a 02 wrx swap.
today, i went down to brooklyn, ny, to get a complete motor, turbo, a crossmember, ecu, and fpc. in turn i came home with complete motor, turbo(no shaft play), a crossmember with sti steering rack(dont know, it was attached to the x-member, so why wouldnt i take it haha) and the fpc. he had pulled the ecu "awhile" ago and seemed to misplaced it(little shady, but whatev)
so i got a great head start. now just to work on my list of other crap, like the harness and now find an ecu(kinda bummed bout that)

Make sure you swap out the fuel rail on the engine. They were just recalled because in cold weather the buldges on the ends shrink and causes fuel to leak through them

ok couple questions, do i need to upgrade to a wrx fuel pump? can i re-use the wrx flywheel and just get a new pressure plate and and clutch? and finally, i cant use that sti steering rack the he gave me cuz its too wide right?
also edited my 1st post with the quick shopping list...feel free to slap me around n let me know what i forgot...

and im looking for opinions on a clutch setup i should go with, as of right now im gonna run my stock legacy drivetrain...but i eventually may go to the lgt(i think) which i beleive they are both push type? correct me if im wrong...so yea let me know, im thinkin act route but im still lookin around
batorr
01-18-2010, 04:01 PM
Im pretty sure you need to use the flywheel and clutch set up for the transmission that you are running. You will need to replace the fuel pump because that pump won't be able to keep up with those injectors. Even after swapping everything you'll still want to get it tunned
squeethebee
01-18-2010, 04:53 PM
You match clutch/flywheel **** to the transmission, not the motor, just remember that. And look into using that x-member, you may have to shim control arms or something.
ed
07xtreme
01-18-2010, 06:00 PM
yea ill have to shim it...i new the clutch had to match the tranny but i was kinda hopin the flywheel would work, but back to the drawing board with that.
i need to make some measurements, im curious what the difference between the steering racks are
squeethebee
01-18-2010, 06:20 PM
It MAY work (the flywheel) but I would just use the Legacy one. You can always check once you pull stuff apart too, my WRX flywheel looked very similar to my RS one, but I had already resurfaced the RS one, so it went in.

go to car-part.com for the ecu, i got one for my 02 swap from a junk yard in RI for 90 shipped!
awesome hood paint work!
def match the clutch & flywheel to the tranny, i'd recommend an ACT if you haven't already gotten one.
and do upgrade to a wrx fuel pump, i went to an sti one, but only because i found it for $15 used.

so i need to pick some brains...so i was speaking with subimods yesterday about clutches...we got into clutch masters fx100 and fx200, other than that there isnt much out there listed under my tranny, and im not sure what else would work. well the 2 clutch master clutches say the hold up to 70% increase over stock... but my pile stock is only what 100hp and 3 ftlbs haha. but yea 70% over that isnt even stock wrx haha. so what the f should i do. do i just get a clutch and hope for the best. or should i start looking for a new tranny and rear end?
let me know what you think...we shall compare notes
squeethebee
01-21-2010, 04:57 PM
Uh, you have way more than that for power. Mine, with 238k on it put down 101hp and 118 tq TO THE WHEELS, no mods. They are rated at 140hp stock, WRX's are 227, so that's not even 50% more power. 70% over stock would last you for quite a while.
Besides, you should be looking at the clutch torque holding capacity, not percentage over stock. Real numbers man!

02-11-2010, 12:21 PM
so I'm down to needing a clutch, exhaust tubing, and general maintenance stuff...oh and spring needs to hurry up haha.
but anywho, so i came across a wiring harness pretty cheap, my question is...according to my manual pretty much all legacy's 95-99 are generally the same. there for a 1996 legacy outback harness should be the same or very similar to my 1996 legacy brighton harness. the outback should just have more wires than mine due to the extra options, correct? or are they identical i just have plugs chilling?
i have yet to pull my dash down to look due to me still needing to drive it every day haha

newest question. so looking over the motor i have i missing some stuff here and there. different lines and what not. does anyone have any places to find great diagrams of the different lets say vacuum lines and where they go? like basically and overall schematic.
also it appears i dont have the stock boost solenoid anymore. what do you recommend? find another stock, go manual boost controller, or should i go GM boost solenoid?
squeethebee

2.2l is out, all a/c crap is out, dash is out, dash bar is out, hvac unit is out....started labeling the legacy harness as i unplugged, now i just need to remove that harness then its on to the wiring. should be interesting since i will be doing it myself.
cross-member swap will happen tomorrow. waiting on clutch and new flywheel to arrive.
whats the deal with the fuel pump controller, i have yet to look into it. i have it, do i have to merge it in or is there a plug for it. ill be doing research on that soon i guess, gotta get that and the fuel pump done so that will be off my list.

Simaler to the swap i did for a friend (98 legacy with 02 motor).
Yes, you need the fuel pump controller. It connects to the wrx rear wiring harness. On my friends car I put it under the dash and only had to run a new ground back to the tank.
The senser is like a fuel temp senser or some thing. And its missing from the legacy tank, but I think its in the fuel pump cage, so if you got a wrx fuel pump with the cage and fit it in the tank then you would have that senser.
Its been a wail since i did this so mite not be %100.

so the car is all back together. except im waiting on a obd2 connector to be shipped to me.
took it for a drive last night with my a/f hooked up....it idles around 12.7-13.2/1, my issue is when i get into boost(not really pushing it due to not knowing any of the codes haha) my a/f rides up to 15.2/1ish. now you think that's 100% tune or its some underlying problem?
i dont plan on pushing the car any time soon. i need to get tuned and i need to finish the break in period on my clutch.
also, im running a hallman mbc and i had it set at 7psi. so last night i gave it one full turn, got it into boost to see where i was, still 7lbs, but it felt waaay stronger. so i pulled into a parking lot and gave it a 3/4 turn. got it into boost, 7lbs again but yet again felt stronger. im compuzzled on that one haha.

Wow i guess I never really updated this. Well, I had the car tuned back before the nems kanc cruise. It's running well at 17lbs. But it seemed slower than it should. I still have yet to dyno it or take it to the track so im not sure where I'm at. But I was noticing after any short or long drive my top mount was getting severely heat soaked. I only have an outback hood so its just the baby scoop. So I decided to snipe a front mount...

so i got bored with two things. my mini truck side said im not low enough, but my wallet said yes you are. so i met in the middle and grabbed a set of raceland coilovers for the wrx/sti. they fit minty fresh and now i could lay floor pan if i wanted to.
and the second thing i got bored with was the hood, just white isn't my style so i worked on that a little.
i put the raceland coilovers in on Tuesday, let it settle, think i may go a little lower but not much. painted 2/3s of the hood last night, needs some dark gray spots and that will be done.

well its been like a month and a half since this threads been touched....
ive added a trailer hitch with a shackle so when i get stuck in the snow i can get pulled backwards quite easily.
also changed my maf and installed a spt intake. car idles soooo much better and my a/f is now reacting like it should.
took the car down to bren on monday so he could polish the tune. last tune i had on the old intake put down 257hp/278tq...this tune with the new intake feels much stronger and its possible we gained like 10-15hp, but no way to tell till i get it back on the dyno...which i plan to do sooner than later
also, saturday im picking up a P&P deadbolt evoIII 16g with very low miles. it wont go on till spring, mostly because i want to wait so i have a second vehicle if something breaks.
that about sums it up. im just going to enjoy the crap out of it all winter. i know its going to be fun because i can already drift dry pavement with no issue, so snow should be awesome

nick, what did you end up with?
255whp, 298wtq. The previous intake made artificial power from the lean race gas like AFR ratio no matter the tuning. It was crap. By getting the AFR nice and safe where we wanted it the car lost a few ponies throughout the powerband. But torque went up.

Picked up a legacy gt 4.11 final drive 5spd/rear diff yesterday. Along with a disc conversion and rear hatch spoiler. Got the tranny for 100% back up. Let's me beat the crap out of the current one without worrying too much.
With that being said, pushed the car on dry pavement for the first time. Never thought my open diffs would let me blow it sideways and smoke some tire, but to my surprise the back end swung out and actually laid rubber down. Helps I'm on snows and the pavement probably was a little sandy, but it didn't break so I'm happy haha

I can't believe my tranny is still together. I would say its because I'm gentle with it, but that's not the case one bit haha.
I try to be nice to it but, well you know:D

Well haven't updated this in forever. Mostly because there's been nothing new other than rust coming back haha.
But I started having a lean a/f issue that bren helped me track down. I have a slit in my inlet where the clamp holds it on the turbo. So tonight I'm installing my samco inlet and 16g...then its time for a re tune
Also in the next month or so my buddy and I are going to do the body work for real and spray the car with single stage. Not sure if ill stay white but if I do I think the hood will be painted another plaid. People confuse my snow camo with a cow too much.
So hopefully soon the car will be about 300whp/300ft lbs....should make for some good fun

16g is on, same with the new samco...I had a huge tare where the clamp held the stock inlet on the turbo.
Right now I'm running 07 injectors but bren recommended I upgrade those again. So I ordered some dw 750s, they should be here by Friday. He also wants me to ditch the ebay header and go back to the stock one, so ill do that this week also....
Will be up dating my for sale thread soon with the 07 injectors and ebay header. I got like 10-15hp from the header but I lost a little spool time

Honestly, the swap is really easy. 2.5 weeks including doing the wiring myself. The long part is fixing any snags. Such as my two teeth off timing. Just take your time and research. I've gone from not even doing my own oil change to doing a complete swap in less than five years, anybody can do it
Headers coming off for better flow to new turbo?

Yint and I have already done the swap to his car. But when I do it to mine, im doing a full interior swap too....so I should be like 2 or 3 days work.
