whats the dillio with emissions and state inspection? like you RS'ers with the wrx swap. do they just plug in your cars vin and make sure your not throwing codes? do they need the ecu or engine vin? do i need to provide any paper work or anything?

did you need to do anything extra the first time you got inspected? if i remember correct every time i go in, they ask what size motor, then they plug in my vin, now that the motor will be different will anything change?

any info would be huge, normally i just ask ed my stupid questions but hes no help to me here:lol:

When I inquirerd about my engine swap I was told that legally you can't swap engine sizes for everyday driving because it changes the specs and weight from the manufacture's guidelines and those mods can't be changed on a title. Thankfully most people never check to see if your engine is the orginal size and as long as you don't mention it your fine. As for emmission codes the nh state computer checks to see if your ecu has picked up any changes that differ from legal parameters that are preprogramed. If your ecu is switched in the swap you shouldn't get any codes. Thankfully your ecu's parameters can be changed (illegal) and or O2 sensors turned off (illegal) so that check engine lights don't come on which allows your ride to pass. Basicly the state computer checks to see if your computer is showing a check engine light and will fail it if it does.

my info may have been misleading to you...my "location" says nashua but legally im from mass...i know nh and mass are becoming very similar in inspections but i think they still are different

you will have to comply with emissions laws based on the area you register your car. Some people in the southern part of virginia don't have to repeat emissions after the intial/registration/inspection.

Just send the car in, and as stated above, they will check rediness and CEL. If the car is doing it's job correctly (according to the ECU; tuned/modified or not) then there will be no issues with emissions.

Yep, as long as your ECU is still OBD-II and all the sensors are checking out, you're good to go from an emissions standpoint. You'll still have to comply to noise regulations, etc., obviously. There's no check to make sure your engine/ECU VIN matches the chassis.

For what it's worth, the computer always listed my 2004 WRX as a 2.5L... I never complained.

I have a 98 Outback with a full 04 STi swap, have passed inspection the past three eyars with no problem, just toss a WRX catback on it. Just to give you some faith!

And if they ask your engine size, just say "4 cylinder?"

Oh yeah this is gonna be fun for me...
Them:"Engine size?"
Me:"0.8L over stock"
Them:"Number of cylinders?"
Me:"two more than stock"
Them:"ECU?"
Me:"Standalone...."
Them:"How did you think you were gonna pass?"
Me:"Hope and pray?"
:o
