ok ive done a little bit of searching around...as a few of you have seen my welcome thread and what not. ive got a 96 legacy wagon 5 speed yada yada yada. its my beater. but as many of you also know, if your driving it you have to like it

here lies my problem, so when i got the car i could pretty much touch seat to seat and armrest to dash with the amount of play in the shifter... it was worse than my old truck haha

so i hoped on ebay and grabbed a $10 short throw...fully knowing it wasnt going to be any amazing fix. well it dropped the shifter height a good inch. and atleast now i dont punch my dash shifting to third

so on to my question. i read something about someone installing gimmick bushings(which were like half the price of kart boy) and obv theres the kart boy bushings. but are all these bushings the same? i cant find bushings for a 96 legacy, can others be used, i would looooove to tighten up the shifting patern. im sick of not being able to feel if im in first or 5th haha

any help, advice, links, or hey dumma$$ do this, would be muuuuch appreciated

thanks

i'd suggest PMing one of the many site vendors :)

but what if i pm a vendor and they only sell one kind of bushing, and there's 13 others on the market? wouldn't that kind of defeat the purpose of finding the community's opinion?

BUT i will pm one and see what theyve got to say, hmmmm, which to pick

Get under the car, and find out if you have the linkage that accepts the large circular shift bushings, I have Gimmicks, got them from subaruwrxparts.com (http://www.subaruwrxparts.com) and it helped. There is also a rear bushing that bolts to the body under there, Kartboy sells that, maybe $35 or so. The circles help front to back, the rear should help side to side.

BTW, this shows the rear bushing, the odd shaped one in the middle.

This is where it bolts, it'll make super sense once you look under there.

and the front ones...

There should be a plate on the outside as well, and SHOULD have a spring on it. If not, do yourself a fave and spend the buck at subaru to get another one, it helps hold it in the middle, neutral return spring or something.

Oh, and its one piece taking it out, 2 pieces back in, use a little lube, cause its tight, and they are stiff.

you sir are the man, is that rear bushing the part the hold the shifter lever "cup"?...if it is i dont think that ones bad, i cant move the "cup" around, its all in the fork that connects to the shifter lever itself

so im pretty sure i need a front bushing, but i need to get in there to check

It's just behind the "cup" mounted to the chassis. They are both rubber and degrade over time, on one of my cars, the rubber in the reare bushing was completely gone haha.

Good info Ed, I need to do this on my car since there's some play in the shifter.
