Hey All,
I have an 09 WRX with Dunlop SP Sport 01 tires on it. How imperative is it that I get snow tires on the car?
Thanks,
Heath

If they are summer performance tires- right away.

I went with Yokohama W.drive for my winters. I wasn't to impressed with the stock Dunlops in the summer so I didn't want to try them in the winter and since they're summer tires it's not really a good idea anyway :)
It IS imperative to get snows or some all seasons. The dunlops are summers only. The compound and tread pattern are not meant for cold weather and snow.

I'm getting snows next week. I have all season at the moment, and when I go up my driveway with snow, i must go slow, for if I even tap the gas slightly, I start to slide. Go for snows.

i actually had these tires the first year i bought my car and couldnt afford winter tires, and for summer tires they did excellent in the snow!! I lived in CT at the time so the snow fall was slightly less but we still had large storms and big hills

I drove with mine on thanksgiving in the snow, and they gripped fine just driving. But stopping was a very big problem! ABS kicked on instantly and they have pooor traction

Looking at the tread pattern, I wouldn't run them... Not as bad as the RE070's I had on the first storm of last year, but still. Is it worth risking an accident? Running something like that while its not snowing is one thing, but if you plan on going out while it's coming down, it's a bit scary.

You will crash. Search the forum, and you'll find several threads exactly like this one. When you hit someone, you'll also be found at fault. Don't risk it and become a statistic.

yeah man... I would either get some snows and ASAP or make sure I have lots of insurance. My 4runner has been hit twice in the snow, both times be vehicles with inadequate tires.....
This one was done by someone who had just paid off their car and removed the majority of the insurance to save $$$$......

nokian hakka's they are the only tire I'll run on my subies. tried blizzaks on a wrx and didn't like them as much. running hakka's on the STi and they freakin rock. just had the beast out on the course at Team O'Neil and they grip and stop so well

I had my Nitto 450r's on my obs for the first little snow we had. it was an... interesting ride. had myself some fun but I definitely dont suggest it. as soon as my cars out of the body shop (hopefully this week?) I'll be putting my steelies and snow tires on for winter tank requirements..

Having now driven on the 09 tires in the snow... I do not recommend it.
Lack of money, not laziness. I'm getting snows very soon.

This. Buying the tires off season is the ONLY way to shop. I suggest anyone needing summers (like me) buy them now instead of March. Save yourself some coin.

I just got some General Altimax Arctics. They ride really nice on the highway. I can't wait to test them in the snow.

I started my 4th winter with Dunlap Winterport M3`s. Great high performance snow & ice tire. Have over 20K on them still over 50% tread left. Steering response almost as good as my summer Bridgestone A050`s.

I had them on my old WRX. For a cheap tire, very good. I'm most likely getting another set in the next week for this car.

im driving on 2 year old dunlop pilot all seasons...get snows. period. i can drive just fine, but that whole, pesky, needing to stop thing doesn't happen very well. needed to save money for my exhaust and some other pieces, so i didnt get snows this year... still not sure it was the right choice...

The stock STI tires aren't even good in the rain in the summer. Don't even risk it. It's too nice a car, and my insurance rates are already too high for you to wrap it around a utility pole. :(
