1980 Toyota Corolla Tercel - first car. Purchased used for $600 with a little over 100,000 miles. It had rust, AM Radio, plastic flooring (no carpet), 4 speed manual. It was the base model. It was one owner and mechanically no issues, but cosmetically it was beat. It never failed to start no matter how cold it was or how long it sat. It was hit and totaled out at 144,000 miles. I had it in high school and 1 year of college.

1987 Toyota Tercel - After a $600 used car that ran and ran with no issues, what should I buy? I got a used (from a Toyota dealer) a base model with an after market CD player and dealer installed A/C. Great car.

1992 VW Jetta ECO-Diesel. My first new car. I never realized this, but this was a rare car. It was pre-TDI. I loved how it drove and the fuel economy and the torque it had especially hill climbing once it got up to speed. Driving on Rt 9 to Mount Snow from Bratt - I was able to pass a lot of other cars that zipped by me on the flat areas but could not beat the Jetta on the hill cilmbing. It was hit and totaled at 100,000

1996 Saturn SL2 - I wanted to try one of these. NEVER thought I would own a domestic car. 176,000 miles (trouble free) later I traded it only because I wanted a larger car.

2001 Saturn L100 - the only lemon I owned. Saturn bought it back 1 year later due to numerous issues that could not be fixed. I think this is when the death of Saturn started.

2003 Saturn VUE - I had the 5 speed VUE Sport. They did not offer 5 speed / 4 cylinder / AWD. You could only get a self destructing CVT / 4cyl / AWD or a V6 / AT / AWD combo. I heard about the problems with the CVT on forums so I stayed away. I liked the VUE but it was horrible in the snow even with 4 snow tires. Part of it was too much torque to the wheels caused slippage between shifts and the traction control only made things worse by not allowing power to be applied. I had to keep it off when driving in the snow. It worked better.

2006 Scion xA - my other car. This is another example of a car company that builds a product that people actually want to buy. No issues in the 3.5 yrs of ownership.

2009 Subaru Forester - NEVER thought I would own a Subaru. NEVER on a list, NEVER would consider one. Well when the Volvo dealer said the Outback was a direct competitor for the XC70 - I had to check it out. Well, I did not get the Outback but after the test drive I left very impressed and went back a week later to drive a Forester and bought it.


Funny story about my Scion xA from last year right when the gas prices started coming down. I was getting gas at a Sunoco station in Springfield, MA when a guy filling up his new looking Suburban and says to me, "you must feel stupid driving a thing like that now that the gas prices are down". I smiled back and as I got ready to leave said, I do not see Toyota begging the government for money. He just looked confused after that.
