View Full Version : How to manually set readiness for emission testing - ODB2 and more

Some people have trouble setting ODB2 readiness like myself at times and received "R" stickers because they:

a) never drive their car
b) they leave their driveway at WOT using my LC map and go over the limiter on speed for the test
c) commute doesn't satisfy criteria even after months of driving

Remember, Readiness is cleared every time a CEL is cleared, battery is pulled, new tune is loaded, or fuel trims are 0'd

FROM A TUNING STANDPOINT:

In Open source - one can automatically force readiness through tuning on some model years without this procedure. Specifically all 16 bit 02-05 WRX/Impreza and more. And some of the newer 08-09 cars. But avoid it, as it may show up a red flag in future emission updates.

FROM A MANUAL SET STANDPOINT (and this works on many different makes and models)

Here’s the cycle I use to "set" it back up:

1) Start cold engine and idle for approximately 2 minutes, 10 seconds. This checks secondary air injection and evap leak detection systems.

2) Accelerate to 20-30 MPH and maintain steady speed for 3 minutes, 15 seconds. This establishes closed loop oxy-sensor operations, response times & switching times.

3) Accelerate to 40-60 MPH and maintain steady speed for 15-20 minutes. This evaluates catalytic converters while oxy-sensor response and switching times are checked.

4) Decelerate and come to a stop. Idle in gear (auto) for 5-6 minutes. This checks evap leak detection system.

The diagnostic checks above will be discontinued if:
1) Engine speeds exceed 3000 RPM
2) Large fluctuations in throttle position
3) Road speeds exceed 60 MPH

bump as an update some cars can get hung up in a limbo mode and won't connect any driving monitors.

if you notice no monitors are clearing at all with your scan tool after completing the procedure. Try resetting the stock image, by disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes.
