Eh, I don't know about handle better. And the 1098R can put more of its power down more controlled. It also makes more torque a LOT sooner. I'm willing to bet that on a track the 1098R is faster. It also doesn't look like a whale shark.
And that Sport1000 is less hunched than a lot of sport bikes out there. Its actually quite comfortable to sit on, at least in a show room.

I just took a new 848 for a test ride yesterday and am going to pick it up in a month! The salesman that road with me was on a new Street Fighter with a set of Termi's. What a monster! But he said it sucked for a daily rider because the 1098 motor is not happy being lugged around at low rpm's. The 848 on the other hand was a sweet ride on the street!

When I brought my 996 to BCM in Laconia, they had a DesmosedicciRR there. Every panel is made of cf. The front forks alone cost $12000 and I think I read somewhere that each rim is something stupid like $5000. All in all, sexy bike but for $80,000 I'd rather have something with 4 wheels. Like maybe a skyline. Port city Nissan has a silver GTR on their lot by the way.

The 999 was in-fact dual. All of the new models are single.
The 999 was in-fact dual. All of the new models are single.
don't forget the 749's. They were double sided also.:D And a little bit of knowledge for yas: When the 1098 was first coming out they (forget the name of the motorcycle magazine)paired it against the 999 to see how badly it would spank the 999. The exact opposite happened, the 999 walked allll over the 1098. Mostly in the corners because the 1098 does have more power but I thought it was kind of funny. I don't like the looks of the 999's/749's at all though. Mostly because of the stacked headlights.

My mistake I intended that all the current model year Ducati's are Single.
But here is an interesting one for you. This is an ST2 from the late 90's. I met the owner in Indianapolis 2 years ago. He removed the dual sided swingarm and bolted on a single sided swingarm. The best part is it just bolted on. He also did custom exhaust, modified the fairing and a few other touches.

Honestly, I still don't know too much about them except that they eat money like it's their business and need constant maintanence. Is that the Hypermotard? Same engine as the 1198 with a lot less weight. Sounds good in theory, but when 1st and 2nd gear are almost useless on the 1198 because the bike wants to stand straight up you kind of have to ask yourself "is too much, too much?". I'm too light for that thing and would kill myself on it.

I swapped out the old cans for Termignoni 45mm carbon fiber cans. Changed the whole sound of the bike. I've also swapped the slave cylinder for the clutch, smaller sprocket up front, upgraded the pressure plate and retaining springs along with an exposed clutch cover. The clutch is still louder than the exhaust. sounded great for the first month but gets a little annoying after a while.

That's a Streetfighter. They do chew up a lot of money. Way more than any Jap bike, but not when compared to other European bikes or even a Harley. Total Dealership maintenance is about the same. It also depends on which model you buy. A 2-valve engine is much cheaper than the 4-valve models to do a valve adjustment on. The Desmosedicci RR (means desmo 16) with its 16 total valves requires a specially certified mechanic.
The downside to desmo is the cost. The upside is that the valves actively open and close (each with there own rocker, 2 per valve an opener and a closer) so there is no valve spring delay. At high RPM's this makes a huge difference in the way the motor performs.
I can't speak for the 1198 as I haven't ridden one, but the Streetfighter with the 1098 motor is a real handful. Though the new Ducati Traction control makes it a much more ride-able bike. Also the new Multistrada and 1198sp have settings much like the the new mitsu evo. I believe 3 different surface settings and 8 traction control options in each. I wouldn't be suprised if it comes out on much of the Ducati line in the next few years.
