I went to the swap meet today up in Maine and met a bunch of NES guys, so I figured I'd post up some pictures of my project.

I've got a '99 RS coupe that used to be N/A with Cams. Now I'm putting an EJ205 into the RS.

Anyway, on to the pictures.

It's something I've wanted to do pretty much since I bought the car 4 years ago. And then blowing the headgaskets in the old motor seemed like a good excuse to go turbo.

I'm just thankful my parents let me leave my projects on jackstands in their garage for months on end.

Turns out the ECU was tuned for 20 lbs of boost and 650cc injectors. With a stock map flashed on it, the car runs a lot better. The MAF is confirmed to be wired correctly. It still hunts at idle and there are issues with the TPS, IACV, and TGVs.

CELs:
1086
1088
1089
1491
0122
0508

I'm going to attempt to figure out what's actually wront going pin by pin for these components. All indications seem to be that the wiring is screwy though.

A little update for you guys.

I had the RS towed to ECS because I couldn't figure out the electrical issues.

ECS found a pin on one of the main engine connectors wasn't making proper contact. That solved all the CELs. However, they also discovered that the block was trashed.

They're taking care of me though and are rebuilding a different shortblock for me. Hopefully it'll be back and better than ever in a few weeks. :)

Thanks!

There's still a few more things it needs before I'd consider it worthy for ride of the month though.

I'm trying to source a JDM rear seat and will reupholster the doors to match the seats.

I also want a bigger rear sway bar and a new front lip.

I picked up a Bosal/SPT twin tip axle back exhaust yesterday also that I need to install later on.

In all seriousness, I believe tacoornot on here posted a good condition 2.0 short block, that would get you back running real quick if you didn't want to rebuild your current block.

I may be interested in that SB, but first I'm waiting on ECS. I towed the car back down to them to tear down the motor. I'll find out soon enough what they are willing/not willing to cover.

hybrid FTW! Are you having your 2.0 heads machined to fit the 2.5 block?

Danny Boy
10-20-2010, 11:00 AM
I was going to but machine shops were giving me a large headache and were taking waay to long, so I had the heads pulled from there. Decided to just use a thicker EJ25D headgasket. Should be fine with the levels of boost I plan on running.

What head shop were you using? Honestly the larger head gasker is only going to cause you big issues down the road. First your car will be more likely to detonate, headgasket will be more likely to fail and the heads will not flow correctly since the combustion chamber is not matched.

Any good tuner/engine builder will tell you to not use thicker head gaskets. I just don't want you to have more down time and another motor build a few months down the road.

Danny Boy
10-20-2010, 12:59 PM
I've done my fair share of research and gathered opinions from some knowledgeable people. Seems like the consensus is that machining the heads is the "right" way to go about a hybrid build, but that a thicker head gasket works in most applications. Since I'm not planning on running meth, crazy boost, race gas, etc, I don't think there is a huge risk in going this route. The EJ25D headgasket was recommended to me over a cometic thicker gasket because of the fewer layers it has and the less likely the gasket itself is to fail. I've decided to roll the dice on this one and see how it pans out.

That's what I went into the hybrid build thinking as well. I just wanted it done "right". Then I ran into machine shop issues. I thought about sending the heads out to CA for EQ Tuning to do their CNC work, but thought that sending the heads across the country and having the car/motor in pieces in yet another state was a recipe for disaster. I've made the decision to just do the thicker headgasket and I'll have to just keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best. From all my research and from Paul's (owner of ECS) personal opinion, this should be a relatively safe bet to make.

I can't wait to row through some gears whenever she finally gets done.

I picked up the RS on Tuesday and had all day today off for Veterans Day to work on the car. I installed my 22b hood vents, put on the summer wheels/tires just for kicks and washed/waxed/cleaned everything. I found and fixed the source to a large leak I had in the car too.

And my goofy ass with the RS
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg137/dannyboy7777/IMG_0992.jpg

I found the leak and think I may have fixed. Hopefully its a permanent fix but we'll see. Had to get the fender off to really see the problem. Water was draining from the windshield gutter right onto the grommet for all the wiring passing thru the fender (which subsequently had a hole in it from when I ran the WRX wiring harness).

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg137/dannyboy7777/IMG_0993.jpg

I also rearranged the garage and talked my mom into letting me park the RS on the previously cluttered side. So this winter the RS will be living indoors for the first time since I've owned her. :)

Danny Boy

Yes it definitely needs more power. I think I'd be happy with 300-330 hp and ft-lbs at the wheels. The next upgrade (unless I decide to sell the car in a year or so) will be turbo, injectors, fuel pump, TGV delete, head machining, turbo inlet, intercooler, etc. For now, I'm just going to have fun with what I've got though. :)
