I had a plan last year that never materialized for a sweet snowy road trip to the ocean up in ME. Will definitely have to do that this year!

I'm willing to take time off from work (Its has to be in Jan or later) to do a trip like this. It just can't be too expensive.

Hey, need help here guys...

Getting my snow tires soon. I am in a dilemma! Studded or unstudded? What would you guys recommend in our area?????

Tough descision. Studded is better tractions on ice, unstudded is better traction on wet/dry pavement.

decisions decisions.....

NO STUDS IMO they make tires soo good now a days they say you dont need them studded. also the subaru AWD system i dont think you will need studs. i vote no! also where did you get the tires and how much? im looking into some snowies!

I had some studless snows on my LGT that were incredible. I'd vote studless as well!

Studless. Studs are kind of over kill IMO. For all of the noise and added cost it simply isn't worth it. The compounds snow tires are made out of incorporate silica and other substances to help with traction on ice.

studless are awesome! My next set will be the dunlop m3's. I currently have the dunlop graspics and they are great in the snow, but the sidewall is way too soft for me!

hey ya know...

Ya'll could stop here in Maine for a bit, I am about 1.5 hours from the Mt. Washington, weather dependent. Do a little mid-winter BBQ on the back deck and then hit some roads...

I like my ball joints, wheel barings and tie rod ends. Much too expensive to replace twice:)

I'm absolutely up for a winter road trip. Just make sure it's planned with enough warning so I can take the time off work.

I think out best bet is to do a trip through the Berkshires starting at Westfield (maybe one of the strip malls) to initially meet.

From there head over to Glendale falls.
Then head over to the Chesterfield Gourge.
Proceed up to Lee to get a bite.
Then take some backway to rt2 in greenfield and follow to the Hoosac Mountains
Check out the Hoosac Tunnel
Drive through Florida
Then check out the Most famous corner in Mass being the hairpin turn into North Adams

The roads should be fine unless it is a day where it is gonna snow, which would be nice. Just have to a agree on a trip, find at least a few people to tag along, and set a date in advance so us working feloow can have time to take the day off.

New Years Day would be fun since its a paid holiday for me, so Ill shoot for then. If anyone has idea to change this proposed trip or add waypoints let me know.

I dunno the physics behind it, but I would assume that studs may aid in deceleration...think of cleats for example. A pair of 14-stud molded cleats is gonna stop on turf A LOT BETTER than silly rubber soled astro turf shoes with .000000000001 inch studs. While snow tires might be on par with studs in terms of acceleration, I believe the SWRT rocked narrow tires with studs during their winter stages.
