Hey guys,

Chime in - trying to plan out future mods.

I heard that the stock WRX manual 5spd transmission is only good up to about 275whp? Is that true?

And if so - what do you suggest as an upgrade?

Currently running 330whp through mine. No problems with gears as of yet. 3 runs at drag strip. I do need a new clutch tho it is slipping at WOT in 4th and 5th. What year car do you have. Obv 02-05

hp is not going to kill your transmission.

Ya hp won't affect your tranny, launching it or shifting hard will. Mine was at 300whp for some time with no tranny issues. It's just how you drive really

thanks guys - I appreciate the input - don't really want to swap the tranny and am aiming for 300whp daily driver/not planning on shifting to death so i'm glad to hear it's all good with the stock one

Mine broke with 250 ft/lbs of Tq during a second gear pull with the stock turbo.

I hate 5 spds

Were you dropping down to second or climbing up to it? :(

I have been told under 300 you should be fine if you dont thrash your tranny. truth is you can thrash it at any HP though. now when you go above 400 on it and floor it in 1st gear grenade is a possibility if you do it a lot

Rough shifting and shocking the tranny is what breaks gears. Imagine the teeth of two gears meshing. If you shift rough, the teeth are going to be pushing one way and then the other...that's where teeth get sheared off. You can do it in the 5spd and you can do it in the 6spd. People have even destroyed PPGs. Drive it like you stole it, and you're gonna be buying parts often. :unamused:

^That.

Word.

You can run alot of power through them if you don't shift. They break when the above happens

Ask me how I know, no seriously ask me 4 times

One wrong shift is all it takes even at the stock power level. Bang second or third wrong and you can create a weak point in a gear or hub.

One of the very reasons for going with a sixspeed for me.

ya my 5 speed has seen more than its fair share of drag racing  never missed a shift at the track and it still feels perfect daily :)
its all about the shifting, and I do it quickly

import tunner put out an artical about the wrx transmission about 3 or 4 months ago. They basicly said that as long as you don't dump your clutch or try lunching your car from a start it should be fine with moded motors. They also said that if you have an sti tranny you shouldn't have to worry about this

My buddy's 05 WRX with 45K on it just tossed 3rd gear. I usually deal with BMW's so this will be my first foray into the AWD wonders :)

Will any gearset from an 02+ WRX replace what's in his gearbox, or does it go by years specifically? I'd like to drop the tranny and replace the damaged gears, but need to know what to buy....

Thanks!!

you will need specific gearbox tools for that subaru.

while you are in it might as well put in LGT gears, same ratios but stronger.
