So my new computer (less than a month old) is really starting to slow up. Mini freezing ALL the time, its really irritating. Twice while typing the previous sentence it did it, freezes while I am typing, then filling all the letters in real quick. WTF is wrong with it??
I've downloaded a few programs, Itunes, Frostwire, Skype. Not much else. I also don't have that much in terms of pics, music and whatnot taking up space either. So wtf can I do, or at least try to do to speed it back up?
Thanks for any help in advance.

My money's on Frostwire, or something you downloaded with it. Either that, or you're browsing questionable sites with Internet Explorer instead of Firefox.
http://download.cnet.com/Ad-Aware-Anniversary-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5
Download, run. :)

Also get the Micro$oft adware/spyware program. It can sometimes hit **** that adawar doesn't get. Still having issues, get some "hijak this" going and it'll tell you what's going on. Also, +1 on the P2P program. L2torrent.4
PS - Ed, Joel says you're a ****ing **** rag.

Well Joel is a douche bag, and drives an automatic, so I hardly care what he thinks.
Also, I used internet explorer to download firefox, thats about it, lol. I've also heard clearing internet data may help? What the hell does that mean?

Ed, would you like some help with smoothing out your set up sometime? My ex had my laptop for about 10 months. I got it back slow as a dog! Had to go through the entirity of the setting just to get it managable. You'd be surprised at what little things clog up the whole system.

But its not even open, that's why I don't get it. Just having it on my computer makes it slow? That's so ghey.

AIM....anything AOL pollutes UR PC and adds all sorts of running processes... the only thing I know that adds more running processes in the background is Norton.....
what kind of PC is it?
How many running processes do U have at startup in task Mgr? Have U ever looked at them, wondered what they were and maybe looked up the processes on google or yahoo?
My wifes Sony laptop requires 2-3 hours of cleaning after a fresh install.. Sony adds about 50 pieces of crap programs that do nothing but constipate UR processor...again, windoes is the SAME dealio...
More than likely it is also loaded with swill from the mfg that is not not needed... much the same way a Windows O/S self installs itsef in the most bloated fashion...
did I mention how AOL is like a mammoth boat anchor?
also the games will sometimes cause slowdowns, especially if they use the Punkbuster anticheat system. PB is running pbA, pbB and pbK 24/7
once installed, it is not active or using bandwidth but it is there... U Can kill them with UR task Mgr but U need to restart UR pc prior to playing in a PB enabled server...
About all I run constant in my PC is bitdefender (just the anti-virus) and Spybot Search and Destroy... Occasionally I run malawarebytes anti-malware to make sure all is kewl.... I also mythodically shut down alot of the microsoft service (security center, auto updates, firewall, etc, etc), add my own and find my PC's run faster without all the microsoft bloatware hammering my processors..
keep in mind all my PC's come from Wal-Mart, have never ever built a PC (including the one I use, PSI-Addict uses or the one my wife uses as her work machine), do not have three seperate networks in my house (its a sordid tale of bandwidth ho'-in), 8 PC's, 5 IP cams and a PC that must remain in tip-top condition anf ast as hell for the wifes werk...
I would honestly bet my $$$ on some type of factory installed bloatware or maybe even a system driver (processor, MoBo, North Bridge, South Bridge) that needs an update and is putting the noose around the neck of UR PC...
yeah.. I would also bet on something p2p as well...plus whatever someone embeds (jujst waiting for a launch to spawn it neato-ness) in the download U get via P2P or via torrents...
& yes Squee..things still reun around the depths of UR PC eating is ability to crunch #'s thus scrubbing off processing speed... Even stuff windows give U beats UR pc down bigtime...

Actually, iTunes does install iPod related background services that run all the time and can help clog up memory/resources.
How much RAM does this computer have? I'm assuming you're on Vista?

I use either Trillian (which isn't terrific in the free version, but it works well) or the built in AIM client in my GMail.

I have Trillian Astra, not aim.
I do have a Norton Internet Security that came on the computer.
I do have some things that have updates awaiting, should I do those?
and it's a Compaq CQ60, it is running Vista. Not sure on the RAM, I got my laptop at Best Buy btw.

Basic Norton doesn't cover spyware programs. Try the link I posted to see if it finds anything.
Also, Norton is a resource hog. It's a necessary evil, but I don't care for it.

Yeah meebo is great, no need to install software ... i love cloud computing....
You running a 64bit or 32bit OS?
My work laptop is running XPx64 and it zips right along, however once in a while I'll hit a program that doesn't like it and it will lock up completely.
My iMac at home has been running nearly every day for the past 4 years with no issues. ;)

I dl'd and ran Ad-aware. It found "cookies", so I took the recommended course of action.

cookies wont hurt your computer. they can only track actions.
check your running processes and see what is tieing things up. try booting into safe mode and see if you have the same problem.

it's a proxy of sorts that allows you use AIM without downloading anything

Well, I "cleared" all internet history or whatever, ran ad-aware, and it seems to be doing better, so I am happy.
Firefox is taking the most process %, followed by Skype. I gotta set that up to not open automatically!

spybot...as well... IMHO. I just don't let it's "team-timer" feature fire up at start up..
I don't use norton either, I use Bit Defender, not the massive version... I have just enough to to my virus and firewall, it has a neato "gaming" mode that open up stuff I dictate for gaming...
updates... if it is for windows or other critical software (anti-virus, spyware, yadda, yadda) do them.. the latest patches, updates and definition dictionaries can not hurt to have in UR pc...
the next trick is to go into UR control panel, get in administrative tools and start killing unneded swill with the "Component services" feature.... It's sort of like Mythbusters though, U want to B really careful about trying it at home...

u prob have maleware or some annoying stuff on your computer which just bogs down all your speed u can buy programs that will find and delete that junk or look around for a free program however if u go looking for a free program watch out because some of them are malware/spyware themselves like those annoying popups offering free pc scans ya dont click on those.............

have U considered letting someone take a look at it via remote desktop assistant or something like that? U can talk to them on the phone while U both see what is happening...

Ed, when we meet so you can pick up the camera some time bring your laptop with you. I will fix it right up.
.....Considering its what I do everyday.
It sounds like you need to go and eliminate most of the background processes and do a bit of tidying up. Norton has to go as it sucks ass. I would suggest something like AVG. I think it's a pretty respectable program for being free.
So send me a PM. I just might have a few nights off this week.

There ya go... someone with a broom who does this and understand what processes U do and do not need...
While ur at it Keeeil everything the manufacturer constipated it with...

OH man... my wife has a Sony laptop...Look its pink OK..hahaha.
The thing needed fat camp right after U install the OS with the Sony disc's. My favorites were the sony updater that allowed UR pc to see the sony site for all the latest greatest pieces of pork... and their version of windows update that races regular windows updates for snacking on UR resources...
Once in a while I run this "Open ports" thingy I have, just to see who is doing what with my PC's ports..
