So my RS died on friday. I don't know what has happened yet, but Jeff and Buddy think it's a bearing.
I was hoping that I could baby the car for a while longer, but I guess not.
so I'm just going to do a simple engine swap with another stock motor. Hopefully some people can come help when I get ready to do a swap.

Sucks about the ol' girl kicking the bucket, but it sounds like that engine has had one foot in the grave for long enough.
If you need a longblock, Jeff Canter's Car World in Candia has been sitting on a complete Phase II EJ25 from a 2000 Forester for a while... their website (carworldused.com) listed it as $750 for a while, but I'd think they could be talked down some. Swap your intake and sensors over and go.
I think East Coast Swappers in Springfield, MA has a dirty but complete '99 engine for sale as well.
You could also call Synaptic 3 as well... they had stacks of used flat 4s when I was there last.
I'll be happy to pack up some hand tools and come lend a hand if I'm available, but I think your Super Dorifto Master Subaru Engine Tech BF probably has it under control.:)

I was going to call ECS about a motor.. I just want to stick with something stock... but that Forester motor sounds like it might work also.

ECS is good, but you might wait a while, i think they are starting to bite off more than they can chew, takes people a LONG time to get their cars back now, this coming from what i have seen and from my friend who just had his STI swap done into a GC body

I just want to buy the motor and I'm going to put it in myself.. os I won't have to wait.

Plus it's a better learning experience, you get to "know" your motor well.

So.. I know what is wrong...
Idler pully is destroyed... so now I'm just waiting for parts to come in.
I also have a horrible valve tick.. so I'm thinking about adjusting that..
But here is my question to all of you.. sohuld I do it since I'm going to get a new motor anyway? Granted I don't know how long it will be till I get a new motor.. so I still do it?

If you don't have another mode of transportation, then I would say do it.
If you do however, then why waste the money?

Just pull any new parts you put on, back off when you do the swap and keep as spares.

What's the ilder pully do? Is is part of the timing system? Granted I'm not profesionally trained, but it sounds like this coupled with a valve ticking might indicate something screwy with the timing system.
As for spending the money, how long before you replace the engine, vs how muc it'll cost to fix, the likelyhood of it lasting long enough to get the new engine without more work, and the inconvienance of not having the car. That's what you need to consider.
