Hey guys,
I am trying to plan a getaway on the coast of MA and need your help/input. I narrowed it down to the Cape but am considering Hull, Scituate, Duxbury, and Gloucester. Probably will be driving up there from CT on Sunday morning and plan to go whale watching (I am aware that only a few of the above-listed places have them).
After that, head to the beach and have a nice dinner at the end of the day. It doesn't have to be a fancy restaurant; even a good fish market (that steams lobsters and have raw oysters is fine). As for places to stay, a rather non-conventional hotel or a place by the water would be nice - a plus if it has a kitchen :) Only looking to spend the night though as the girlfriend flies out of Logan on Monday evening.
It's a bit last minute but I figure I'd try and enlist the help from fellow members here.
Cheers.
Gerald.

Randy,
Why Plymouth? Is there a quaint town to go with it too akin to what's been described about Newburyport?
Cheers.
Gerald.

I personally like the city... Stay at the Hyatt Regency in Cambridge for a nice view of the Charles, Brunch at the Top of the Hub to see the rest (The woman will fall in love with U all over again up there), the duck boat tour is always kickass......then U can usually find a private boat down on the waterfront that is willing to give U just a kickass tour of the harbor...
walking the waterfront on the charles is just as kewl as any beach on the cape IMHO & U can get crazzzeeee seafood on the waterfront...

Oscar,
Actually... I'm trying to stay away from the city... :p I spent a lot of time there during the summer and winters a while back when I was doing my undergrad at UMass Amherst; old Southie and Cambridge used to be my stomping grounds  Plus, we've been there a couple of times and the North End is where we usually end up having dinner with cannolis after :) I still love the city though but this once, I'd like to go somewhere else preferably with a beach to laze on.

understood.....and I can totally relate.
In that case the north shore sounds so much better than capecod...I think the cape is a black hole of tourist entrapment, traffic and woe..

Glouster is good. But Rockport is very much where it's at. Glouster is good place to ship out for the cruises but Rockport has the better in town stuff. Just remember if you want to leave Gouster. 128 SOUTH! Not north. I can't think of how many times I ended up screwing that up when I was younger(fresh out of highschool heading home to NH from Beverly after seeing any Ex at college) It's a nice drive at least if you pop on the wrong direction. So it's worth it just the once.

Don't forget, the "ces" is silent  those eastern MA'ers get offended easy about that kind of thing.

No, the "ce" is silent. You still make an "s" sound. Glah-ster.

Wor-ches-ter-shire-shire-sauce!
Anyways, I ended up in Rockport for the weekend. We stayed by the water at Captains' Bounty Inn (next to the Peg Leg Inn) and it was awesome. We walked around the town and the beach during the day and had a nice little lobstah and chowdah dinner on the deck watching the sunset. We went whale watching from Gloucester the next day but all the whales were busy sleeping!
Wished we had a bit more time to go visit Newburyport but I guess there's always next time. Beautiful place the north shore is.

Very nice... I am a little late, but for next time, if you want to drive another hour north of Boston, Portsmouth is always nice for a weekend away (if you don't live there).
But of course that means you have the potential to run into Randy and other shady suby folk from the area.... :unamused:
