AS many of U know I pick at my car and its weak spot... the turbocharger which has blown up twice in under 6k... I have total faith in my builder and the people working on my car, I have lost faith in a few parts suppkier though...

PEople like HKS, Garrett and Mitusbishi all produce turbo chargers...They are Huge momgo corporations employing a tremendous talent pool of designers & engineers that are all backed up by zillion dollar manufacturing facilities. They have also been in the business for of producing these units for quite a while...

Enter the upstarts...

There is a rash of secondary companies such as the the one I dealt with...Deadbolt Enterprises. They essentially take these brand new turbo's crack them open and rework to what they feel is a better design for a premium. BY doing this U are now open to the trials and tribulations of a small company (just like deadbolt who is now gone) and how they flow... I know I am living it!

I look at something like this from GArrett.
http://www.turbofittings.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=T&Product_Code=80-000-005

It is a beautiful unit made by a honeywell owned company... these guys probably have a slight clue as to what they are doing, phenominal R&D, fantastic testing and the turbo is rated to deal with over 500 HP...RIGHT OUTTA THE BOX...

For a premium I can send this brand new, under warranty unit made by a multi-million dollar public company and send it to a 5000 SF buidling where five poeople work. They will open the turbo (voiding ANY waarranty), tear it down and then tell U exactly how this they can better a multi-trillion $$$ publically held company with more Engineers that Worcester Poly Tech and Rochester poly tech combined...

I have recently seen a early picture of one turbo-modifiers facility via a friend in the biz. He is machining on a lathe that looks like something my grandfather had, using very old looking Starrett gauges (may not B calibrated) and in the case of the picture I saw: The owner working a turbo fan on the lathe was barefoot and standing on a dirt floor......I amtrying to get a copy of the pic but they wont release it to me for a variety of reasons.

What I am getting at is value... For an upcharge I can squeeze somw more horsies out of my car, void a perfectly good warranty and IMHO give a piece and faith to someone who may or may not have been around for that long.

Does anyone else see where I am going with this? I am into deadbolt for an awful lot of $$$ and all I have to show is ZERO boost and a turbocharger that is like udders on a bull... this is all within 5k miles of being new..

Seriously... my car is built to the hilt (something I regret) and designed to withstand alot of boost and horsepower... DO U really think I will suffer THAT much by using a totally stock unit designed for the HP I need or should I strap it on, pay the premium, get the extra horsies and pray to God that whomever does the work is NOT going anywhere and wont do the Shenanigans crap that deadbolt did.

I am having a terribly hard time justifying the customization, porting, polishing of my new turbocharger...

How much more do U pay for those extra horsies? Can the cost of it really B justified for a street car?

before U answer please keep this in mind... The picture below is my current deadbolt unit. Under 5k miles with two meltdowns, Deadbolt is ded, I am ****ed for a new turbo..

I get what you're saying... I too would be hesitant to send my baby off for a gutting if I didn't think the work was top notch.

Get us those pics!

Two Old Ibanez both pretty rare and have awesome tales behind them. One signed and numbered by steve vai, one of 777 made available to the public. A five string bass an acoustic and my daily player..a Charvelle Dinky with EMG's. I have a couple more Charvelles (identical Dinky's) on loan to a friend who needs backup guitars for his gig.

ROFL... isnt this thread hijacking? no really what do U think of my turbo conundrum?

Weiner Man,

First of all, your looking at this a little skewed. Coming from a shop that specializes in Turbo's, I will tell you this.

Garrett (Honeywell) has authorized dealers scattered across the country. Blouch, PTE, and many others fit this bill. These turbos are, and will be warrantied by Garrett, as long as it is not a design flaw.

Here's the common misconception:
Turbo's Blow up by themselves. 99% of the time, this is not the case. These are VERY highly engineered, tight tolerance moving parts that spin at many thousand RPM's. The smallest bit of debri can kill a turbo, ESPECIALLY a BB one, with no effort. Also if you don't have enough oil on a Journal bearing turbo, or if the oil is not draining out fast enough (clogged return line) you will have similar results of Turbo Failure.

Even Multi-billion dollar Honeywell will not replace one of these for free.

Here at Slowboy, we do not disect the center cartridges of these turbos. We do make custom Turbine housings, that simply bolt on around the wheel. These are precision engineered and fitted for us with another authorized Garrett Distributor.

Crazy stuff huh?

Chris

Thank U Chris...

I think my biggest problem in all of this was the denial that Deadbolt went into over this; Both my guy and the turbo MFG essentuially cornered him and he still went into instant denial regarding it leaving anyone but him holding the bag

I also realize that when all of this was going on the company was in fact failing and on its way out... I am not sure what happened or how it all unfolded with Deadbolt... ALL I know is they left a henious path of destruction that inlcudes dozens, maybe close to 100 people that I can find; I was lucky, some people never even got thier units back from rebuild, some are 100% positive they goe used parts and I know of at least one person whose motor was totally compromised by pollutants left deep within the recesses of a rebuilt turbo...

Please do not take this the wrong way... it is not at all meant on as an attack on U guys, Blouch or anyone else who does work to these units. It just so happens I have a really terrible taste in my mouth that I can not make go away and I paid a awful lot for it... Not to mention the fact I went back for a second helping...stoopid me...

I think probably slowboy has the right idea; work the housings, improve on what is happening to match an individuals spec... & DO NOT crack the center cartridge..
