So let me just say you guys are awsome for answering all my noob questions. Here is another one. I have had my front rotors replaced about two years ago. I also had my back rotors replaced as well. The front ones look awsome. still shinny and clean.. no rust. the back one are good as well but there is a plate that goes around the outside and the back that is falling off:( its all rusted out and is an eyesore. Is this like a brake dust sheild or something. Can i take it off. or is it part of the rotor. if it is... is this bad.
any thoughts? do i need to post pictures.
actually i will in a couple mins!

Its a sand and water shield.
Depending on your setup you may be able to just repalce it.
Contact one of the dealer/vendors on this site for pricing.

You could take it off, but you are running the risk of having stuff flung into the back side of your brakes and getting stuck in the caliper and damaging the rotor. Best bet is to replace it although there are many people out there driving around with no dust shields. Also your front ones should have them someone else must have removed them.

also alpine, what are the real odds of rocks ruining the rotors. is it really worth replacing them. do you have them?

I still have mine, but they are also rusting out. I think the chance is very unlikely unless you drive the car in the dirt or sand alot. Mine are also hammered away from the rotors to allow for the wrx rotors on the front and 00+ legacy rotors on the back to fit. I haven't had any problems and they have been that way since March.

Just as Alpine said, you can just take them off if you fancy. They are held on by 3 or 4 12 mm bolts if I remember correctly. While I have my rear dust shields still on, my fronts have been removed for a good year now. If you can find replacements for relatively cheap, I say go for them. I would if I could find some for my fronts.
