I hear replacing the filler can be a pain, because of the rusted bolts and such.

it was a pain in the ass to take off, the new one took five minutes. project took an hour and a half. you do the math.
I was so shocked out the amount of rust there was.

it needed to be replaced though. I did a smoke test, and you should have seen the smoke pouring out of this area.

I have done this repair to numerous Subies. I just did mine a few months ago. Just don't put the plastic shield thing back on. It retains salt/dirt/water. Just undercoat the filler pipe. Less weight too ;)

forgive the bad drawing. I learned this in the transition from 1psi carbed to 3 psi, then 60psi...
that filler tube LOOKS like an old carbed version.:unamused:
I took note, the injected or high pressure version (the real version, not an oe messup) has a bend like in drawing.
I'd make my own.
that should not be happening.
the last rusty ones I knew of was 85-87 carbed. they had to change the way they were made. You could even a find a loyale with a rust free one, going on 20 years. Maybe subaru had a "ricer relapse"....

The majority of the problem comes from the fact that subaru covers the fuel filler pipe with a plastic surround that is secured with popits.
Over time the popits loosen and dirt, sand a water from the rear tires sprays upp and gets inside the plastic shroud and cake on the tube and cause it to rust out faster.
If you have an older suby you should remove the plastic shroud and remove any debri and check for bubbling rust spots.
