Toyo Proxxes 4's. They were Fing awesome on the Impreza and grip year round like a dream. With the abuse I put on tires too they held really well.

The best bang for your buck are Continental Contiextremecontacts.
I will NEVER buy a different set of tires as long as I live.
The snow grip is like a set of snows and the summer grip is incredible.

Nokian WR G2s FTMFWY! They are perfect for NE winters, so much so that I don't even run dedicated snows anymore on either of my Subies

^^^I second that. All season are a waste of money. Get a good set of summer tires and a decent used set of winter tires.

+5billion. Kevin is dead right. I did VERY well with the Toyo's on the light half stripped chassis of the OBS even at 235's but that's cause of hte light weight and wide tread so I could just kinda glide across the top and keep going. Brian seems to not like his set but me and Freak have had good success with them traction wise durring non snowy season. I tried them on the SVX and it was a no go. On the SVX I'm running Dunlops. SP600 Sports 245/40/18's summer and Grasspic DS2 225/50/16's winter. If my baby is driven in the winter ever again I will do the same. Likely she'll see very little snow time after she's running.

I disagree. Last winter I still had my old wrx, and I was working in Indiana from october till april. We got tons of snow out there, and there was days when I showed up for work and guys I worked with with big trucks didnt. I had Yokohama Avid V4 All-season tires, and never ever had a problem.
There were about 5 snowstorms that dumped a foot of snow on us, and many more storms with less snow. Heres a picture of me towing one of my co-workers free when he got stuck with his chevy s-10. I towed him free in a foot of fresh snow(kinda packed from walking on it) and never even spun a tire. My on-looking co-workers couldnt believe it and cheered for me.

And heres a couple pics of my car that gives you an idea of what it went through, all on my all-season Yokohamas.

I drove for 400 miles through several inches on the highway coming home for christmas. I was doing 65 the whole time.

^^^Nothing against rocking 1 set of tires year round. Just saying if you have the cash for good street tires and a et of winters it's really great. My SVX is a tank. I laugh at trucks as I pass them on the highway because it's safer in front of them than behind them slipping.

+1 for 2 sets. All seasons are not fun in the summer when trying to go fast around corners.

All seasons will work fine for most people. I say "Why compromise?"
I drive through snow banks, unplowed parking lots, plowed parking lots, whatever is between me and my destination all winter. Come summer, on go the summer tires and I head out to autocrosses, track shenanigans, and dominate on and off-ramps.
(Then again, I also cheat a bit. The car that see's the autocrosses and track shenanigans actually never comes off of it's summer tires -- it hides in the garage all winter. The beater Legacy does have two separate sets though, and IMO it's a helluva lot more fun to have separate sets of wheels/tires for different times of year.)

+1. If your looking for these in a 17" (225/45-17) I'll have some up for sale pretty cheap soon.

ok so i think i have narrowed it down.....unfortunately i do too much driving to justify getting summer and winter sets so all seasons it will have to be....
-continental conti extreme contact (having a hard time finding these.....they need to be special ordered)
- eagle GT's or F1's
-yokohama Avid V4S

Yikes! for the continentals its going to run me $650 mounted and balanced. I have been reading about people picking them up between 80-110/ tire. I feel like i might a better tire for that price.

Monetarily, that's not an option for some.
I'll go head to head with anyone on any tires in any condition with my all seasons.

They're tires. They're the most important part of the car puzzle, because they are the only part of the car puzzle that connects every single other penny you put into your car to the road. If you can't afford snow tires, or quality tires in general because of money spent elsewhere in your car, you need to prioritize a little better.

I gotta agree here, when I get to the point where its time for tires on my rex (which at this point will be before long) I plan to buy one set of great streets and one set of pretty good winters. If the money is available, I may get a different size rims for the streets and keep the factory for winters.

That's exactly what I'm doing... my stock wheels are 17's & I'm getting winter tires for em... New 18" wheels & summer tires for summer. Thats the plan anyway.

How much driving are you doing? You'd be surprised how long good tires will last. I managed 76k on my old '06 in just over 3 years. Only bought 1 set of snows for her and 2 sets of summers.
Edit: I have heard bad things about Eagle F1's and snow, I would stay away from them at all costs. Try not to get an 'all season' with a chevron pattern, it's great for dry and wet but absolute crap in snow.

Yes, I've already picked out my rims, Enkei NT03+M, expensive but worth it. My mother used to always tell me you get what you pay for.
