Ok, so, every time I end up at a meet we end up saying, "We should all go shooting some time". So, maybe we should go shooting in early Sept? August seems a bit full with the EFI meet, Manch meet, etc.

So, does anyone here belong to a club that allows groups? Or does anyone know of a club that will allow a group day? I'm a member at Firing line, but it's an indoor range only and outdoors is nice this time of year. Plus, frangible ammo in my AK sucks. :nate:

How many people would be interested? Are we all a bunch of "gun toting wackos" or just a couple of us? :D

You'd need to use an outdoor range or the range's approved ammo. Basically anything over 2300fps..or maybe it's even lower, most ranges want your outside. And let me tell you, range ammo is way more expensive than the several thousands rounds of 7.62 I picked up a year ago. By double at LEAST. :unamused:

I just got 1000 rds of .40 S&W from Georgia Arms for $300 shipped! Sadly, it took something like 12 weeks for them to assemble it. :-( Stupid components shortage.

Other than that, I have 1000+ rds of 7.62x39 to use. It seems terrorist ammo is cheaper than police / military ammo by half!

if your new to guns I can tell you for rifles go military surplus. I got my Mosin Nagant for 129 bucks it is reliable, powerful, and cheap as hell to shoot. for shotguns your basic mossberg 500/ maverick 88 (same gun) is a great place to start

Hey, figured I'd chime in. I belong to the North Berwick Rod&Gun Club. It's right up the road from my house. I've only got 1 handgun, my first (Walther P22). I can basically bring as many people as I want but if there are others there besides my group then we just need to take turns. They do have an indoor range but as stated before, ammo is expensive. Also, no fully automatic firearms allowed...at least not to be used on full auto.

yea manch and belmont split up... they are different owners now however they still work together with the memberships etc. i love belmont the guys down there rock!

any day over a glock i will agree, they have a great varitey of cal's available too. I personally have a 92FS beretta for defense. I would buy a walther product any day.

My latest find in the .22 cal was this GSG-5. 1st Anniversary Edition. The only 1st edition that H&K EVER created. (gsg is actually a subpart of h&k, german sport guns)

I'm just thinking overall price for shooting. I have a buddy with a XD45 and he says it's wicked expensive to shoot. I think a 9mm would be a lil' less to shoot. I guess it'll come down to whichever feels most comfortable to me.

Sorry for not responding. That was the belmont range. They upgraded the back stop with what look to be hard rubberized balls. They allow every caliber up to the 50 BMGs. Still no bird shot for obvious reasons.

The Manch. range is good if all you want to do is work on handgun. But the place is always crowded with d-bag wanna-be gangsters. The bullet holes in the ceiling and the trays prove my point.

I didn't give Katie ANY time with either gun before getting to the range, and besides one episode of waiving the gun around  she actually did pretty good. I do plan on getting her comfortable with both guns...just in case the Zombie Apocalypse happens and I need her to help out. :D

handgun is 15.00 rifle is 20.00 machine gun is 35.00 for rental. for rentals you have to buy house ammo which caries depening on caliber.

best bet is find a buddy who will lend you a gun or use one of ours. then go to wal mart or dicks sporting goods and get ammo for a lot cheaper. obviously you can shoot your own ammo if its your gun...

and last i knew range was like 15.00 an hour per person, targets are a buck, and ear and eye protections are a buck each.

 I think my next guy (almost grabbed one at the last gun show) is going to be a .308. I am going back and forth between a Remmington bolt action or a DPMS semi-auto setup. Both have significantly more range and accuracy than my AK. The advantage of going with something by DPMS is you can get it set up for 7.62x39...so I can use one type of ammo.

Ive was looking into 7.62nato a few months back for my ptr91 (really need to pay that damn thing off.. curse you layaway!!!) and it was typical rifle cartidge prices. Im seeing anywhere from sorta cheap to the good old fashioned "buck a round".. finding my 7.5x55 for my K31 is just as bad.

BUT HOW CANS DEY BE THAR SAEM!? THEY IS DIFFRNT NUMBARSZ?!?!?

I ended up having to quietly, and almost politely.. explain that in the world of numbers and measures and all that sorcery, theres different "units of measure". eventually, he got it. but was still kind of had the "agree to disagree" type attitude.

.45 is really only useful for close-range shooting. The round is just so damn heavy and slow. Of course, there isn't much that's manageable with as much stopping power.

I bring my .40 hiking in VT. Moose and bears tend to get annoyed when you sneak up on them.

I don't want it to be manageable. I love that specific gun because its beautiful, and it's BAMF

If I wanted something practical I'd get a 9mm. If I was looking for something truly useful for defending myself should a government mutiny happen, I'll get an M4 or something purpose built for that.

I want the 1911 for the pure fact of that gun, and how I grew up watching that show and always wanted to have one... both to look at and shoot!

The only difference between .223/.308 and 5.56/7.62 is the powder charge. 5.56 NATO has more powder to it and shouldn't be used in a gun only rated for .223 remington. Its the vice versa for 7.62, .308 has more powder than 7.62 NATO

Yeah the SAAMI pressure ratings for 5.56 are different than .223, so it depends on the level of the person you are talking to. Some people claim that "they're the same, use whatever in any gun" but that's not really the case.

I've had an Austrian import model Glock for a while now, but I think I'm outgrowing it and liking my Sig a lot more. My Kahr p380 keeps me company when I travel.

Hmm.. I'm an other-way-around case I guess. The bodies are light, but in the larger calibers they tend to be too snappy from lack of a metal frame in my case. I much prefer my p229 over my G19, especially in .40 or .357SIG over the G19 in 9mm.

drdabbles
02-03-2010, 06:35 PM
Sig has been awarded several military and police agency contracts. It's always the same three manufacturers against each other- Springfield, Sigarms, and Glock. Traditionally the Glock has won out because it's light, durable, simple, has a solid history, etc.

Unfortunately for Glock, they rested on their success for too long. Now all the other manufacturers have similar designs, lighter composites, better reliability, strong supply chains, etc. All of them put out individual guns once in a while that have problems, and all of them have people ranting about crappy performance or superior reliability.

My Springfield is easily my most favorite handgun I've ever shot with. I have a buddy that would NEVER buy anything but a Sig. Ever. Neither of us have had any incidents of a round stove-piping. But, diagnosing that problem is a real PITA- Try different ammo, different charges, different weights, different stances, hold the gun more firmly, hold is more gently...big pain.

The one gun I can say that will eat any kind of ammo all day long is my AK. The thing is loose and sloppy, and she ain't much to look at. But DAMN is it a dead-simple gun.

yeh... class3 is no joke. tought to get and expensive. Id love one.. as for sig vs glock, Id take my carry/work sidearm (sig) any day over glock. only because sig has the DAK trigger system and worst case, if I had a light hit on the primer and it didnt fire, instead of having to do an immediate action I could at least pull the trigger again and see if it goes off. its helped me out a few times at the range during quals. other than that, I can pull the trigger an extra time faster than I can do an immediate action. and Im pretty quick.. lol... I love me a big pile of Sig. its what I rely on to keep me alive. I know every quirk my pistol has to offer. and theres few. I'll trust my sig before a glock. the one glock I ever owned, it broke.... the plastic guide rod broke with less than 100 rounds through it. weirded me out. I know theyre good for what they are.. but I dunno..

ok stop! rambling post is rambling! lol. sorry. I'll edit this tomorrow if need be...

drdabbles
02-04-2010, 03:26 AM
...that's one feature that almost swayed me toward the sig from my springfield. No need to cycle the weapon if there's a misfire. But then I figure, my job doesn't require me to (usually) carry a weapon for my personal safety.

That glock should have been replaced at their expense. That's not the only person I've heard say their guide broke...but usually it's after like 10K rounds. :dunno:

Yeah I found myself liking the hammer and decocker more on the Sig or HK's over the striker fire on the Glock.

Either unit has been totally reliable, eats any kind of ammo I put through either one. Take down, parts, and cleaning are simple on either one as well. There's something about having to cycle the slide if there is a problem on the glock with no DA action that is a PITA however. They're both simple and easy to use, each has a different flavor. I haven't tried the XD yet, but I would like to for comparison.

it was supposedly a fully rebuilt/refurbished by glock police turn-in. they claimed it was essentially brand new. i basically said this is horsesh.. shoes.. horseshoes..... and when I talked to glock they wanted the whole pistol back, instead of sending just a guide rod.. I ended up selling it as is to my stepdad. he bought a metal guide for it. since then Ive just tried to steer clear of them..

I was there a couple weeks ago and the owner was selling a gun, then the guy said he wanted to pay a couple hundered on his Food stamp credit card! Not only did he scream and ***** at him for even making an attempt but he called almost every other gun store int he state and told them to not sell to this guy.

talking about blowin stuff up...the sportsmans guide ( www.sportsmansguide.com (http://www.sportsmansguide.com) ) sells this stuff that you mix together, then shoot at it and i makes a huge explosion. they are called exploding rifle targets. part number AXA1-158178. i want some

Haha thats pretty funny the competition plate shattered! But then again im pretty sure they are meant for slow traveling soft nose handgun rounds lol.

Id never buy one of them though, I got tons of 1/4" and 1/2" thick steel plates from work all the time. So I bring them home and keep a stack of them. When one has too many dents/holes in it, I throw it out and hang a new one :)

I went to manch yesterday and shot my new ruger. It was awesome!!!!!!

They'd lose the right kind of business though. And I know many people locally that refuse to go to Manch simply for the reason that nobody kicks people out. Or at least approaches them to ask if they need to learn how to use a gun.

Then again, my ideal range is a large field with computer parts strewn about.

Incase any of you would like an amazing buy on .223 ammo. Belmont has about 30cases of 1000rnd bulk pack 55 grain .223

$289!

same for 7.62x39 and one other popular caliber which i cannot remember

The best i can find online right now is Wolf ammo for $5 more. Personally i think wolf it the dirtiest and hardest to clean.

Did you catch the brand on the .223?

That binary compound you mix together is called Tannerite. There are a few group buys on it here and there.

speaking of tannerite.. anyone know if they still make exploding targets?

clarification: the stick on ones, not the cans

Ive put tons of wolf/silver bear/brown bear through my sks and it eats it all the same. Im pretty thorough about cleaning after I shoot, anyway. and when Im bored.. and when I feel like it..... so Ive never had a problem with it being too dirty. I also ran wolf through my m4 when I had it and didnt have any troubles. for the money, it tends to be hard to beat it, though I know a lot of shooters dislike it immensely. I think in the few hundred rounds of 7.62x39 Ive shot Ive had literally one failure to fire.

question for you all. do youthink $400 is a good price for a SKS with composite folding stock in decent condition?

Robk0000
02-27-2010, 03:21 PM
Belmont has a immaculate SKS for sale with the beachwood trim, looks unbleieveable and its $350. Ive been seeing them around that price at a few stores.

jwebsta32

Now, keep in mind it was 2 years ago,
but I bought my SKS for like 185 or so. I think the proce on it was actually like 225 or something that day, but I paid cash. It was in absolutely great shape. It's a Yugo with 'everything' working (ie. rifle-grenade launcher). With the bayo-lug mounted bipod, Tapco stock and Buffertech buffer, im still under this 400 dollar price that people are charging for this ancient weapon. I would steer clear of those prices.

yeh. same. I my yugo, same $185. with a blackhawk sling, tri-rail, buffertech buffer. tapco mags. extended mag release, and a red-dot site. and I still dont think its $400

interesting thing happened last night, i was out at belmont shooting my AR. And about ~40 rnds in the gun shot in a burst mode... wtf? it happened once, i checked the gun out, looks like the hammer lock by the trigger is kinda worn. Ill take a picture and post it up.

but it was a FUN few seconds...!

my SKS has done that. I was firing at a normal (somewhat slow for me, fast for others..) and out of nowhere it fired off some extra rounds.. I finished the magazine and locked the bolt back to cool.. didnt want to get in trouble for "having a full-auto"..

hammer lock sounds possibly, maybe it just slid by without catching. how many rounds do you have through it?

Robk0000
03-05-2010, 04:53 PM
3 rnds went through it and then it went back to normal. I really hink its the hammer, its got a very nice wear mark. :(

Rooster
03-05-2010, 05:22 PM
Hmmm, doubtful as the hammer really isnt was causes the burst (Its the disconnector) but who knows. Most likely you found a sweet spot on the trigger.

Robk0000
03-06-2010, 03:41 PM
well the disconnector arm or whaver its called gets hooked on the hammer. And the point where it does that is rounded out and scratched so, i think it may have just skipped. Or i found the sweet spot. i hope never again. or ill just have to convert to full auto.

In NH it's only a tax stamp you need to get, I think. It's like $200 or so. :dunno:

I thought it was different for full auto.. I know an SBR/SBS or silencer you pay the tax stamp but full auto still required a higher permit level

Hey everyone-
Just got a 2010 Legacy GT last weekend. My first Subaru. Anyhow I haven't been shooting in ages because of my work schedule and ammo being so tough to find, but I have built up a small collection for when the zombies come:
Mossberg 12 ga shotgun. Nothing special, just a AR type stock
Ruger 10/22- cheap to shoot and fun
Sig P229 in 9mm
Sig P245 in .45
Beretta 92 9mm
Glock 32 in 357 Sig. Also have a 9mm barrel so range time won't break the bank.

Yeah, the expense is really on the gun side with full auto. Unless you happen to know someone currently in a place with a large number of them. Say...Iraq. Or Afghanastan. And they are willing to risk SERIOUS punishment and you're willing to risk doing a bit in the state penn.

:D gun fanatics! YES! Now I am getting all warm and fuzzy. Never owned one but I am waiting for a Sig P250 to come in. Really wanted a .40 but a 9mm will do for the range, due to cost of the ammo. I can always buy the .40 upgrade kit later. I would definately be up for some range fun.
