Hey All,

So after paying people many times over to install my new stereo I have decided to do it myself (with I am sure some pointers along the way from you). This stereo is going into an '09 WRX. I have decided to photograph and detail my experience so others who want to try it themselves have a walkthrough to help them.

The headunit I am installing is a Pioneer Premier FH-P800BT Double-DIN CD Receiver with Bluetooth and iPod remote so some additional cables required as well as XM receiver making this probably one of the most difficult installs.

Here are the first photos after removing the face plate and routiong the XM antennae

The antenae cable fits perfectly in this seam:

At the rear door it slips right under weather stripping:

At the floor where it will go under the seat to attach to receiver:

Will update later I I progress through the install. Input is appreciated.

Best,
Heath

Again, put the stereo trim in safe place until you reinstall...the paint SCRATCHES and CHIPS quite easily.

Good luck with the Pioneer unit, hope you have better luck than i did (read: I'll never own or recommend another pioneer unit again).

I managed to get one scratch on the fascia, but not too bad. I have placed it way out of the way for protection. What was your problem with Pioneer? I have had an Avic unit in the past and it was great.

Here is an image of the radio removed:

Question: I know what the large white plug is, but any idea about the smaller plug and single black/ blue wire?

Smaller plug is used for the sub I beleive, and the blue/black is a ground.

I spoke with Crutchfield and they thought it was ground as well but I just noticed that it says AMP on the harness. Other than that I can't find the ground, and no where else can I find a ground coming from the vehicle.

are you going to be selling your stock radio? If so I am interested in purchasing said radio

well, as it turns out, the 09 HU is much wider than mine and it won't fit in my car without cutting stuff and things. So until further notice (when I figure out how to fit it in there) I won't be purchasing said radio. I like saying "said"

The new gen impreza's use 2 iso mount, not 2din.

No I haven't, honestly, I don't think it's worth the effort man.

that is the ground... the newer systems are weird and the wire is prolly coming from the amp but grounds the whole system through the amp. it is indeed the ground and it clips on to a metal piece off the din mount correct? and i would highly recommend not running any antenna through the door. i have my gps antenna on my dash inside the car and works fine. and i too have a pioneer d3 and LOVE it don't understand why you don't like them... any stories? plese do tell
