View Full Version : 2007 WRX Clutch upgrade needed
Demetry

I know there are several threads out there but everyones situation is different. Got the car dyno'ed today and wasn't able to finish because my clutch started slipping. As it stands it put down 270WHP 300 WTQ on DSG's Dyno Dynamics dyno but we didnt want to completetly destroy the clutch so stopped there. I'm going back down in a couple weeks once I get this figurered out.
My car will prob be around 280WHP/330ish TQ once complete. Its a DD. I drive semi agressive but in a conservative manner (if possible  ie. dont launch, slam gears but several pulls through the gears a day, on off throttle, spirited driving)
Looking for peoples experience on clutch kits. One person will say ACT is the way to go others would say Exedy, clutch masters, spec....
- I dont mind a stiff pedal, actually prefer it.
-Would like the least amount of chatter
-Would like to have a 14-20lbs flywheel (i think) your input needed.
I do not plan on going with more power on this car.
Thanks in advance
Chad

I would recommend an ACT HD clutch with either their flywheel or a Gruppe-s Flywheel. I would stay with a steel fw because it is a dd. Just don't get a 3 or 4 puck disk and definately dont go unsprung!

Thanks for the advice! I just need to save a little money now for the install.

Although I run an Exedy, I would recommend the ACT. Nothing wrong with the Exedy but I prefer the grip, engagement, and pedal feel of the ACT. The Exedy is a bit lighter and easier for daily driving though. Either clutches with a lightweight flywheel is going to make the clutch more of an "on/off" switch.

Mine had a perfect catch point. It made launching a breeze!

Do you plan on installing this yourself?

No. Never installed a clutch or flywheel before. Why do you ask?

I'm pretty sure he said he'll be doing his in spring, but I don't know if he has made a choice yet. and civic, I wouldn't mind doing that at all for you. just give me a week notice or so to make arrangements. :)

I'm not sure how long the usually time it takes for doing a mod like this, but me and Chad like I said before only live 15/20 minutes from each other and spring time works for me too. If it's not a huge hassle mabe we can knock out both cars on the same day if possible??? (I'm a noob when it comes to clutches and stuff, lol)
p.s. Ohhhh and thanks for the help too :)

Damn you all and this talk of clutches. Makes me hate the feel of mine even more (yes, I want a new clutch cause of feel when I'm not even making near the power needed to mandate an upgrade, lol).
Eric I may be getting aholding of you to do mine soon too, assuming the budget for my wedding doesn't go through the roof lol.

I don't know "IF I have" to do a flywheel too ir if I can just to a after market c,utch and use my stock flywheel. I don't intend on takign the car to the track really at all. I want a very streetable clutch for daily driving. Any thoughts on this with the flywheel???

My understanding has always been that lighter weight is better for NA, and slightly heavier (as in closer to OEM) is better for boost. Although it seems like many people say that lightweight is great on WRX's, so I dunno, I r teh confuzled.
That being said, I know Honda OEM flywheels were almost ALWAYS cheaper then aftermarket, and I'll assume it's the same with Subaru's.
On a side note to all the Subaru OG's, what're some good websites for getting OEM Subaru parts through? I've been spoiled by hondaautomotiveparts.com & acuraautomotiveparts.org over the past 6 years, and I'm looking to find something similar for Scoobie parts.

Yeah my stock clutch and flywheel have 35,000 miles on them. When I have the clutch done if I can keep my stock flywheel and resurface it or what ever and it'll still last a good amount of time I'm ok with that. Liek I said pretty much 0 track time for my car. I want her to last as much as I can :)

does it chatter at all, ever? if so, just do a flywheel at the same time. it will probably have some hot spots etc. if we get it apart and see it damaged at all, and don't have a flywheel, then we'll have to make a decision. install new cool clutch/pressure plate on crappy flywheel, or put everything back in and wait for new flywheel. not cool. double labor is not fun. ;) Just go with a complete flywheel/pressure plate/clutch/throwout bearing set. if you go with a light flywheel, you may get some misfire codes. maybe brentuning can help with possible misfires that may occur. I will recommend Exedy or ACT as the place to get the kits.

And I don't think doing two clutches in one day is impossible, but it may get boring for the one waiting in line. ;) also, make sure to soak the DP bolts in PB Blaster two days prior. I'm not going to damage parts.

Eric, yeah we're still on. I havent even decided what I'm going with yet. Probably a basic ACT kit with a mid-teen lbs FW. Most likely this will be an April thing.
Rob, we'll look in to it when it gets a little closer. Heck, I wouldnt even change yours if its not slipping. I have 77,000 on my stock set-up, 25,000 of them on stage 2 power and 15,000 on my currect set up and it only slips in 5th gear well in to boost.

Nice. You got some decent power to that thing. More than I have, but let me know how it is.
