View Full Version : Massachusetts Exhaust Thread

Given the legal implications of exhausts in Massachusetts (i.e. Louder than stock is illegal) I wanted to start a thread on the topic.

Post:
Setup: Your car, what parts make up your exhaust and, if possible, audio/video.
Experience: Please also post how long you've had that setup and how much trouble you have/haven't had with inspection and LEOs.
Comments: Any other comments you might have about the setup.

Starting example:

Setup: 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX Wagon - Gutted stock UP, Maddad 3" downpipe, stock mid, Prodrive axle-back.
Experience: Installed August 2008, no trouble from police as of when the car was traded in July 2009. Never had to get it inspected
----------- Just started it up yesterday (5/19) with an officer basically standing on top of the exhaust. Didn't mention it. :)
Comments: Very quiet compared to a lot of setups, but still has a nice rumble without drawing attention.

My exhaust just went on, so I'll update this down the road.

Setup: 2008 STI - Invidia catted downpipe, Harman catback.
Experience: Installed two days ago.
Comments: Surprisingly quiet for a 3". I couldn't even hear my car when driving behind my buddy evt_dan's.

Update 8/9/09:
The car is a lot louder now that it has a real tune. I drive like an asshat through the city rpm wise, and the car is loud, but when I see a cop I can put it down to 1500rpms where it is super quiet and they don't even turn their heads, so that is nice. No tickets yet.... not even when there were 6 loud Subies going through downtown boston really late the other night.

Car: 04 STi
Exhaust: Skunk2 TBE so no cats
Problems: so far nothing when it comes to getting pulled over.
Comments: I have had it since October 08. It turns a lot of heads because it is loud but so far so good and no tickets :D.....knock on wood.

Setup: Had it both on my 2003 WRX and 1996 Impreza Brighton w/ WRX Swap - TXS Catless Stealth Back, Prodrive Oval Tip, Perrin Up Pipe
Problems: Zero
Comments: Great Setup if you want something subtle at idle/cruising speeds and a nice low growl at WOT

Setup: 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX Hatch - SPT Cat-back
Experience: Installed 7/24/09
Comments: Fairly quiet compared to a lot of exhausts. I think it's a bit quieter than my old Prodrive, but that was with a DP. Has a nice little rumble to it.

Never got a sound clip before installing the downpipe, unfortunately.

Just installed my down/mid pipe friday.

Setup:06 wrx- Bosal catless dp/mp to a Flowmaster ?? series( came with car)
Experience: Just installed 8/07/09
Comments: Quiet between 1-2.2k. Sounds pretty mean at WOT. No trouble from any Police...Yet( knock on wood):spin:

Setup: 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX Hatch - Invidia 3" Catless DP, SPT Cat-back
Experience: Installed 8/12/09 - Pulled over by MSP on 11/6/09 for speeding. No mention of the exhaust.
Comments: Sounds great. It has some volume, but nothing crazy. I think it's a bit louder than my old setup. Not quite as deep, but still pretty. :) I have a very small leak at the adapter between the DP and stock cat-back, but that should be fixed soon.

Setup: 05 STI Perrin GT30R kit with HKS Carbon TI Exhaust
Experience: I have been pulled over 5 times for my exhaust and have gotten tickets for it 3 of the times. I tried to fight one of them (back in 2008) but no luck. I got pulled over in Milford, Franklin, Boston, Ayer, and Harvard.
Comments: Very deep rumble... I am putting my stock axleback on in a few weeks to see if I can avoid these damn tickets...

I had a NY State Trooper pull me over and give me flak for my exhaust... and it's stock! I had to show him that it said "STi" right on the tip.

No, it is. With any sort of load, it is beyond unreasonable. The walls of a house may muffle it a little bit, but not much else does!

Heath had an extra one that he got before from someone but it didn't fit his tip so now I got it :)

Sorry I forgot the rules...

Setup: 04 wrx sedan, full JDM twinscroll turbo setup (EL) jdm downpipe w/1 cat, jdm Hayame catback w/ tiny ass muffler and the now optional silencer

Experience: installed just before July 4th but at the time it had the usdm twin tip catback untill about a month ago the Hayame catback went on after a custom extension pipe was made due to the funny length...
still no problems from the Police but I'd rather not get pulled over for a stupid reason you know. hence why i put the silencer in today

Comments: VERY EFF'N LOUD without the silencer LOL and yes it DOES sound like an EVO :spin: and I like it

Car: 04 WRX
Exhaust: APS TBE catless
Problems: One time got pulled over by a mass state trooper who pulled me over so that he could check my tint, tires, exhaust, basiacally anything. But I got off with only a warning and have never been bothered since. I have been pulled other by 2 or 3 different local cops before and none of them have ever said anything about my exhaust being too loud. Infact one of them commmented on how nice it sounded. :D
Comments: I love the exhaust! My only complaint is from the wife and that is highway driving for long periods of time about the exhaust drone. So I just turn up the music alittle bit louder.

You could go with any factory option exhaust as well and keep documentation in the car of it's existence. If the police keep hassling you start reporting them for harassment. Personally, I think this law should not infringe on federal standards and needs to be rewritten to state the federal standard of <95db, instead of this "louder than stock" crap they dare call a law.
