Now onto the history. My friend works at a junkyard and can purchase cars at auction. Around 3 years ago I started ripping my 95L Coupe apart because I wanted to build a 700hp drag car out of it lol. I've come to my senses now about that project. But anyways, I needed another car besides my gas eating truck to drive around, so I figured, why not another Impreza since I already know the thing inside out. I asked my buddy to look for one at auction and bam, he finds another 95 L station wagon that had a bent front control arm for $350. I win the thing and wait a day to get it. Once it arrives my happy face turned right around when I seen it. This was the start of the nightmare.
Now you may be thinking the car is all crashed up or something. Not the case, when I took a look on the inside of the vehicle, it looked like bears were living in the thing for years, I have never seen SO MUCH HAIR in a car before, the previous owner must of been a beaver molester or something. Well this so far has went in the wrong direction from my original intention having to throw the entire interior out. So after basically replacing the whole interior (with a jdm one since there is no reason to spend money on stock replacement parts) I move on to the original damage.
Turns out the cross member was bent too. No big deal I think, I can just put the legacy turbo one in so IF I decide to go turbo in the future, I will be ready. Next problem, I had some issues along the way with the axles being stuck in the front knuckles so I just replaced all that too while under there, one axle actually took me forever cause the pin was stuck on it and I eventually had to grind the axle itself to get it off the tranny :bonk: I also upgraded the front brakes to the legacy 2 piston ones ( they are like RS ones) and replaced the L steering rack with a 00 RS one I had in the shed since I already was removing the cross member, might as well upgrade now. I replaced the steel wheels with the legacy turbo wheels since the steelies would not clear the new calipers.
So besides some major problems, so far so good, just need to reinstall the exhaust and I am finally DONE .................................NO, FAIL. The exhaust manifold does not clear the legacy cross member by a long shot, and even if I extended it, it would then be hitting the ground. At this point a month passed without me even looking in the direction of that bastard. Finally decide to say screw it, I'll just do a turbo motor. I purchased a 20K from ECS and had Paul do the wiring for me on it.
So now I am swapped with a new interior, but yet the curse continues. Had some start up issues with it because one of the wires got pinched somewhere so that took a week to track down and fix. After that though, this car finally runs again, with a connected exhaust! Moving on to the exterior, I had to get a hood with a scoop so might as well get a CF one and a 04 replica Scoop for it so my intercooler gets the most air charge. After installing the hood I notice that it doesn't line up correctly with the stock headlights and grill.....So I change that over to a V6 grill and RS headlights.
Its pretty much hopeless now so I keep moving on with this unintended build, the next item to go is the ugly L bumper that is ruining the front end look, so on goes a RS bumper. Same thing with the rear one, US spec looks horrible all sticking out a mile long, so V2 STI it is. Same with the taillights, might as well make it match, V6 STI wagon go on. Also changed out the hatch for the Outback one with the 2 wings, which later I upgraded to V6 STI wings. I flat blacked the whole car cause I hated the color red.
Drove the car for about a year, upgraded little things like the hood vents, front lip, RS wiper arms, and some other stuff I probably forgot. But anyways, I lasted a whole year using my L tranny with a V4 RA engine before 2nd gear finally went. I had a 6 speed tranny waiting for me in the garage for my other none moving project at the time so I swapped that over. It is a JDM V7 RA non dccd tranny. Acceleration with that tranny made it seem like night and day vs the L tranny, the car became so much faster now. Also at the same time I messed up the other sides control arm not making a corner so I upgraded to STI control arms with the wider track and did Nissan 4/2 pots with LGT rotors on the car to avoid this situation again lol
