I have an 09 Forester XT Ltd with 78xx miles on it. Last Sunday on Route 128 near Salem an awful clacking noise started emanating from under the hood. I got off at the next exit and looked under the hood. Couldn't see anything obvious so we hit the road to our destination, but we took back streets just to be safe.

Well, glad I was on the side roads, as the car died a half mile from where I first pulled off. No check engine lights went on to reveal a problem. Called Subaru Roadside assistance and got towed to Ira Subaru. They dropped the oil pan to find pieces of metal in it. Ugh. Subaru Corporate told them to replace the whole engine. Well, a week later and I have my car back. In the end, they said the #2 rod bearing broke.

The mechanic said this type of failure was rare. Props to Subaru for covering the cost of my rental for the week, even though they didn't have to.

So. What's your worst failure in a new car?
