VVV ALL MUTE POINTS NOW! I have an 05' 6speed in the garage. Just thought I'd share.
Okay so I'll be getting a V6 JDM RA STi trans wiht DCCD at somepoint. Only two things holding me up is I need to pay it off and decide on what final drive ratio to go with. I could stay with the 4.44 but I would like to retain some cruising fuel enonomy. 75mph at 4k doesn't sound like a constant fun to me so I'm looking to pick a lowwer final drive. Thinking 3 choices if I do have it changed(not costing me anything to change it) 4.11 for that slight change but still not what I"m looking for, 3.9 VERY possibly what I'll do, or 3.54 for if I get a 07 6speed later down the line and want to dump this into the SVX with a quick heave-ho no f'ing with the rear diffs. Only thing is I feel like I'm waisting the RA dropping it out like that to 3.54 but fuel economy saved is good. I'll have plenty of launch with the EZ as stock numbers are 245bhp and I plan to see 300bhp when i first see it moving the car along. So I put forth a vote to see what you all think. I'll probably ingnore the votes later but at least will be able to say, " I should have listened to them.."

I wish my 6th gear was higher so I got better mileage. The rest of the gears are good though.

its 6th the only time you will be there is highways...Whats the exhaust you plan and at what RPM does it drone?

What's your aim?
AutoX? drag? street?
Your gearing needs to be chosen by how you plan on driving and also matched to your motor.
If you want a tall 6th, lower highway rpm, you will sacrifice lower gear powerbands.
An Sti gear set you will be hitting 3rd for 60+, a WRX will hit 63-65 in 2nd.

At what RPM? I know in the LGT its like 6750 for 60 MPH

WRX...
The LGT will need a shift at 62mph

if tuned and only going to 60, 6300... IIRC
If you're running the 1320 you'll want a shift at 56-5800 to keep in the power band

$2500  I told you you need to talk to Dylan at DS1

Stig I'm planning on DDing it for a while and get into autoxing later on. Gonna also very far down the road turbo the EZ. I really need to not get raped by fuel cost which is the whole reason for even debating. If I had all the money in the world(and didn't just get the 6speed) I'd keep the 4.44 but yeah. I"m still paying it off along with still getting the car set to even turn over the EZ so I"ve got time to decide.

just the tranny,or did you get a controller and rear diff too? Its still alot of cash, i wanna get the gear set which is probably a little stronger than the RA gears, but then again you have an extra gear.

3k for the whole sh'bang. I posted up how much the trans alone was cause that's what you asked. Everything thing in addition to swap over from auto.

More votes? Real votes on the situation. 6 of 8 seems to all really be just "JUST DO IT MACHO GAS GUZLE'N STYLE!" Any more opinions?

if you already bought the RA set, wouldnt that mean you already decided on going 4.44?
Seraphinwolf

No. the 4.44 is the final drive ratio AKA the ring and pinion in the diffs. I can choose what ever final drive I want. Dylan's gonna swap out what ever ratio I want for the diffs. He's gonna build me the rear one way or another and it doesn't take anything for him to do the fronts too if I decide to change it. I do eventually wan to track the car but it's still primarily gonna be a street car and for a while my DD. While 4.44 is totally do able as a DD my budget for gas says otherwise.

just dont speed, im getting around 23 mpg and i do about 67-70. Anything faster and its to loud and a little slower and it has no balls. I think the 44.4 is great.

Yeah well I'm trying to stay at or over 28mpg average. Legacy's 5eat which is what came with the engine (same for Tribeca) is 3.26 I think. I"ll have to figure out where I have it saved. I have an Aunt that was getting an average 27mpg in her 05 3.0R 5EAT Outback before she sold it. So you are running a 4.44 right now? What do you cruise on at 75mph?

More bumps. Gonna get a R180 to go with the trans so need to choose. Swap FD in teh R180 or match the R180 I find, in which case still gotta choose 3.54 or 3.9. Sooo 4.11 is right out now.

Still up in the air on this. Anyone have experience jumping between different final drives in the same car with same setup? Changes you saw/ felt? I might just pickup a junker 4.11 5speed to use for the purpose of moving the car till I pay off my new trans and the rest of the pile of goodies I have awaiting me from DS1Motorsports.

Okay so due to the close gearing of the RA I think I've settled it and am just gonna go wtih the 3.54 to make things easier plus that means the R180 I get will be a 06/07 which I'd preffer. So i know a lot of you said leave it 4.44 badass but I need to think of how I drive and that fact that I'd eat gas like crazy comuting on the highway. I don't do under 75 like EVER so yeah. I'm very gas concious so 3.54 it is. I'll have to get a hold of DS1 now and let Dylan know to switch it and find me a R180 to match.

I'm confused...
You're getting a v6 RA 5 speed?
And the 3.54 rears are still a 3.9 final drive, due to the 1.1:1 stepper in the transmission. The lowest manual fd I'm aware of is 3.70 in the 06-07 WRX.
Seraphinwolf
04-08-2009, 05:10 PM
Well then you need to keep looking. 3.54 has been a round buddy. 06/07 STi's happen to be 3.54(or at least the 07. But i'm sure the 06 was too) Besides when you have a transmission specialist at your disposal you can have what ever you want. It's just a matter of replacing the ring and pinion set in the differential.

Final drive is not the same as rear end gear ratio.

I"m starting to think that you are thinking I'm thinking of something different than I am. (Say that 10 times fast!) Ring and pinion sets that are in the differentials. That's what I'm talking about. They don't change anything about he gears int he trans them selves but they do change how they transfer through to the CV axles and to the wheels.
Anywho ever the one to change my mind I may be trying to price out the difference of just finding a T-boned or blown motor 06/07 STi and scavange the whole under body and such rather than sourcing all the parts seperate and just do the 6speed now rather than later. Gonna start looking into this as an option and talking to ECS again about their thoughts and pricings. I don't have the space right now to strip down the STi and hold onto all the part-out parts to sell that I don't use so if they can offer credit towards the work for parts left from the car and motor left over(EZ30R>EJ257 IMHO)

Priced out and unless I could find a t-boned STi for under $8k I wouldn't be saving anything.
