You're unbelievable.

+1

How does anyone expect a car dealership to beat a tire warehouse facility?

Randy's got nothing to do with part costs. I understand his argument though. Price matching a Tire supplier is pretty good for a dealership IMO.

Agreed.

For Nick to price match a warehouse we are probably not making any money off the item.

Mark up is how we stay in business.

If we priced everything at cost we would go out of business in a week.

it's simple economics... i'm glad I paid attention in school.

you're hopelessly cheap.

Good luck finding a set of tires.

Ahhh, but did you factor in the $100 in shipping from the Tire Rack? At that point Exeter becomes cheaper.

Honestly, all I was usually able to do when I worked in the industry, was match the total price from tire rack (yes, including shipping).

They pretty much wholesale to their regular customers. Even as a shop that actually did a good amount of tire business, my prices from tire rack themselves left me with about enough profit to cover the fees from the credit card companies (if the customer used a credit card), and MAYBE, just maybe, buy me a cup of coffee. I actually was usually able to get the best deal (for the shop) from Town Fair Tire, but still.
Tires are a commodity item that carry a very slim profit margin. I always like to give the business locally, so unless you get a screaming deal elsewhere, I would get them from Exeter.
eb, I'll go pick them up for you when they come in if you want  I'm down that way quite a bit. :)

For the record, Eugene is looking for 225/55/17 General Exclaim UHP tires. This tire is not a cheap tire per say, and the price isn't about to drop any time soon as these tires are popular and the Summer is around the corner across the nation. Simple supply and demand theories dictate the price of these tires will not drop but instead rise. Tirerack supply numbers shows that my information above is 100% correct.

That said, Eugene and I talked over the weekend and I offered to check local suppliers such as Towne Fair Tire and Sullivan Tire to see if someone local had them and we could save him the cost of shipping. I check with 4 different tire suppliers yesterday, none of them could price these tires below $100, and that is at OUR COST, not retail cost. If Eugene were to call up these places he would pay even more, probably closer to $120-$150 a tire (this is assuming that Eugene does not ask them to price match or play any of his cheap tricks).

We have a wholesale account with Tirerack. Tirerack offers absolute crap when it comes to wholesale pricing, even if you do a good amount of volume through them you still end up with crap for a discount below retail. But I offered to check any way.

I am able to get Eugene these tires at the same price he would pay per tire if he went through Tirerack himself. As a friend I expected him to be open to the idea of helping myself and also helping a local business. Since this post is here I can only assume that Eugene cares about neither. For the record, we are making next to nothing off these tires should we do this deal for Eugene. In fact we are making less then 10%. So his theory that we mark things up 10%-3,000% is absolute crap and he knows it.

EDIT: Also, not a single place I've found on-line beats Tireracks price on these tires. 1010tires even has them for nearly $150 a piece. If you want cheaper prices perhaps you should start looking at different tires, tires that are more affordable for your income.
