What does a catch can do?
Basically a catch can serves as a resivoir for excess fluid, the fluid is taken from one area via pump or drain and is stored in a tank. The purpose of the catch can is collect all excess waste and to not let it build up or be re-introduced into the sytem.
How does it work?
Say you have a valve or hose that is draining excess fluid into the engine bay, ie the breathers ontop of the heads or Crankcase. These all leak oil, and are redirected into the engine via 2 tubes that are directly connected into the Turbo Inlet tube. You may notice on just about any turbo Subaru model, the TMIC has two tubes runnign directly parallel with the bottom of the intercooler. Well, these are the drain tubes for venting the heads and crankcase. On some vehicles they are rerouted to the intake manifold. With the OEM setup all the excess fluid and bad fuel, air or whatever comes out is recirculated and introduced back into the system. Over a period of time these fluids can build up and the free flowing air and fluid may not be free flowing anymore. This is where the Catch can comes in place.
How do i install a Catch Can.
In most situations you will connect the catch can, directly in series with the vented hoses. Catching excess fluid and not allowing them to be reintroduced into the system.

How im doing it.
I purchased the MFactory basic catchcan, its a black anodized in color and will not rust, along with the catch can comes a number of hoses and fittings. In my case, im not going to use much of.
My situation i want to vent all three areas, both heads and crankcase. The crankcase itself is not even hooked up to anything and is just draining into the engine bay, making a mess after a period of time.
My last modification was a Intake filter cover which i specifically fabricated to be able to work with the catch can setup, making it accesbile and easy to drain. I will be mounting the catch can directly to the side of the metal housing and the hoses will be routed with 1/2" tubing to the areas in need.
This is very easy to install and cannot take more than 30 minutes. I will post pictures and a step by step when im finished.

I'm thinking of installing a catch can as well. Last year during the SCCNH autocross in the back lot I saw oil leaking from the passenger side breather. The clamp was a little loose, but either way, oil was making it at least part way up the hose. I read that lateral g's contribute to oil getting sucked up.
E-bay has some simple kits on the cheap. How much did your setup run you Rob?

$29.99 plus 10 for shipping, i was going to use aluminum tubes with threaded fittings, but it will add about $50 to the build. So just going to use cheap-o hoses that have like 1/4" insulation!
looks horrible.

Hey mind if I parralell you with a NA setup? Or is it Identical?
Robk0000

they are identical pretty much. although you would go back into the intake manifold instead of the turbo inlet. Im going to install it either tomorrow after work or saturday.

took 5 minutes to install, my brass T fitting is the wrong size and i still want to make a bracket to the back of the cover to something. heres how it came out otherwise.
And it works btw, i have some crap at the bottom of the tank already, lol.

Sweet I will see it then! I just installed my SPT front strut bar and bead blasted and primed my new radiator shroud. Going down to the barn soon to paint it black. Rob you wanna come over and paint and have a couple beers?

are you talking about the filter? if so, not really. I havent blocked it entirely, it gets air directed up through the fender where a duct is feeding fresh air.

thanks!
i got about 15 ft of aluminum clad copper tubing, bends fairly easily and looks really nice, im going to get rid of someof the rubber lines and make them look really nice with the aluminum tubing.
it will take a pretty good amount of time, but i think it will look outstanding!

nice because the hoses tend to become an eye soar:lol: that'll clean the engine bay up quick!

Hey Rob, what did you do w/ those overly large tube connectors in this pic:

Robk0000

Lol, thats just a close up they arent to big, they are 1/2 tubes. I took the chrome pipes out, replace them with a 90 degree 1/8" NPT fittings, they are same thread so it wasnt a problem, after the 90 fitting i just put the chrome fitting back on and the tubes plug right in

Have you noticed any crap in the catch can yet? I've had mine on for a few months and still nothing caught. I guess I need to wait for a track day to really make it work.

yes, the gauge has a little oil on the bottom so i think there is like a teaspoon of liquid in there now.
Robk0000

BUMP:
Do not use cheap bendable hoses, if they bend easily chances are they will kink under heat of the engine bay and eventually lead to cutting of air to the breathers they are attached to.
I used cheap-o autozone tubing with thin walls. The hose kinked eventually, and cut air to the pcv. this equals expensive repairs and a 257 swap.

i hear about a lot of turbo cars with catch cans but they would help out my cruddy old NA as well right? when i took my intake off this spring there was a little snail trail of oil going into my throttle body from where the tubes from the valve covers enter the intake :(
i really dont know much about catch cans but that is what they are supposed to prevent right??
Robk0000
05-30-2009, 08:56 PM
That is exactly what they are suppose to prevent. You dont want a actual trail of oil or residue going into the tb. Normally you will find a ligth coating of oil on the sides of the tb or intake if installed propperly.
