View Full Version : DIY for the TGV deletes

I'm not one for doing up these DIY wright ups but here we go...

Tools needed...
a power drill w/ an 1/8" drill bit
a socket set w/ 10mm and 12mm
philips head screw driver
a sawzall (not a must but makes it easier) w/ metal blade
dremel tool w/ grinding bit or sanding drum

1. first off take the drill w/ 1/8" bit and drill out the screws holding the butterfly valves in place then slide the valves out of the way like so. also take the tgv motors off each side using the sockets and screw driver
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/sh8kspeer/tgvdeleteproject002.jpg
and
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/sh8kspeer/tgvdeleteproject001.jpg

2. now you can slide out the rod that was holding the valves in place. this might take a minute to do, I took apart one side and forced the rod through the bearing on one side like so...
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/sh8kspeer/tgvdeleteproject003.jpg
so now it should look like this (see strait through it)
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/sh8kspeer/tgvdeleteproject004.jpg

3. now you can either use a sawzall or a grinder tool to take out the divider. I first used a dremel w/ grinder bit for the first 2 gtvs but then used a sawzall for the last to just to get the dividers out of the way like so. (if using a sawzall, go slow and make sure to not cut too far)
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/sh8kspeer/tgvdeleten003.jpg
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/sh8kspeer/tgvdeleten009.jpg

4. now with the dividers out of the way you can use your grinder or sander bit to smoothen out the sides and get rid of the ruff cut edges
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/sh8kspeer/tgvdeleten008.jpg
and repeat that with all 8 cut edges (2 per runner). this should be the outcome
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/sh8kspeer/ej25wut008.jpg

5. now I know theres alot of people who do this last step differently.
Plugging the holes on the outside of the tgv's where the rod for the valves once were. I used JB Weld to fill the holes.
I first put painters tape on the insides of the tgv's to keep the jb weld from leaking through. I did one side of the tgv at a time and let them cure for an hour or two just to make sure they wouldn't drip while I did the other side
for some reason the pics didn't come out but its kinda easy to figure out.
Others have threaded bolts into the holes, ect... I found the jb weld easiest to use and from what I read it'll hold up to anything I through at it!!

its been said that by doing the TGV delete, people have seen a power gain from 10 to 15 whp because of the better air flow. I havn't been dyno'd yet so I can't confirm the power gains...

If anyone has any questions feel free to shoot me a PM and I'll try my best to help you out! and sorry for the noobie wright up, I tried my best haha

Flapper wheel would work good for smoothing out the insides of them really well.

what do they do, i mean do they actually have a function, its pretty much mimicking the throttlebody flap isnt it?

any retune needed after this?

The lack of tgv motors will throw a cel and not having the tgv's will make it a little rougher to start in the cold, but I don't think any major tuning has to be done. I wouldn't drive it far though, without data logging to make sure everything is ok with the increased air flow. I guess I'll find out this spring when I do my own. :)

thanks, I was really tired when I did it too so I wasn't sure if I screw'd up or not while doing it:lol: I looked it over again when I woke up and say it wasnt' too bad:lol:
I've got a few other wright-ups I'm trying to organize before I post them up. if anyone has and idea or wants/needs a specific wright up I'll see if I can either make one or find one and post it up:)
and thanks again, it was my first right up...

and that was the only mod? I dont believe you :unamused:

To the OP talk about what kind of PITA it is to take these out of the car to work on them

on a stage 4 car with tgv's done properly and polished they give a good amount of gain.

the first time it was a pain(couple hours of frustration), hardest part was making sure I had all the bolts out. everytime I thought I had them all off, there was 1 that I missed:unamused: everytime:lol: after that I didn't re-install all the hardware so it was much easier after that:)
(biggest pain was dealing with the fuel rails and the engine harness underneath the IM)
if you plan on doing this mod I also recamend getting the 8mm Phenolic spacers that go under the tgv's. also, get new gaskets!!!

I'd make a wright-up about taking the intake manifold off but I don't have any of the pics of when I first did it and I don't remember where everything was since I didn't re-install everything:lol: I'll see if I can find one though:)

Jus a question. Does the 2004 wrx have tgv's? I've been told it doesn't and also that it does so I am tryin to find out. Does this alway throw a cel? I have been debating doing this because of the cel and the emissons check in nh. Thanks

I had mine deleted early on, with the first set of mods... from what I understand they are a huge chokepoint for airflow and really there to appease the federal emission program..

Quick question about the TGV deletes:
Where I live we routinely see well below freezing temps during the winter.
Is the TGV delete going to make a big difference in how the car runs right on start up, or help smooth it out, or is it simply going to make it a little bit cleaner?

You gotta have the right tools.

It would take you 10 hours to get them to look like this with a dremel.

Air tool and strong grinding/cutting bits will save you a ton of time.

This was my first time and it took about 5 hours. I could probably do it in 3 next time.

Drilling 'em out is soooo not worth it. Too much hassle. My way was quick and easy. I had the first one done in like 5 minutes I think?

I really like how these turned out. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on a set of these now. You did an awesome job polishing them up.

two newb questions:
1. What exactly does TGV stand for? (im stuck on Throttle/Temp. _________ Valve)

and

B. Is this worth doing/possible to do for an 08?

Bu11dogg2

and

No (i'm sure someone will chime in that it does at horsepressures but I assure you they are mislead)

bumping an old thread i know...but, i was wondering how exactly it does affect it on start up? i read the whole thread and everyone says its not a problem... so it sputters a little? wont start on the second crank? like what exactly am i looking at? being my daily driver i cant risk not being able to get to work...and its gets mighty cold at 4 am in december....

get a tune

I would, but my new clutch is slipping, so I dont want to waste money on a tune that would have to be redone anyway.

I just want my check engine light off and or my clutch to stop slipping.

its supost to hold up to 319 WQT and I dont think i am puting out that much at only 17 psi (thats when it slips).
