came for the TD04 carnage, stayed for the wisecrackery.

So, by change, you mean like, when the oil light comes on right?

By the by, I bet there are a lot more expensive paperweights out there than TD04's

A car came in with what I affectionately call a "popcorn maker"

Removed the turbo, found about 5mm of shaft play.

I cleaned it up, took off the hot side and removed all the metal hosing and made a paperweight for my desk :)

Car came in with 2 camshaft codes, that indicate one of 2 things:

1. low oil
2. oil is like sludge

This means the turbo got starved for oil and overheated causing the bearings to go.

We found about .5 qaurts of oil in the motor :unamused:

at least it was only a TD04. I can't imagine making something like a deadbolt or APS turbo into a paperweight like that.

I would hope someone modding would be more "on top" of this kind of stuff.

Sounds like someone who bought the Subaru bc it was a "pretty color". probably couldn't find the turbo under the hood if you pointed to it:lol:

If cleaned every oil change the banjo bolt screen is your best friend :)

-=The Boss=-
01-13-2009, 03:51 PM

my 2.2 didnt burn oil, after putting about 3000 miles on the new motor, i had to add almost quart?

Is that normal?

mdungelman
01-13-2009, 05:33 PM
I burn oil in my car. Usually around 2,000 miles I add about half a quart. And I'm guessing you may be on the gas a little harder than with you n/a motor Rob. Cuz its fun!

Robk0000
01-13-2009, 06:18 PM
well it gets about the same milage when im not on the gas. But its actually really easy to stay out of boost so, that could play in part too.

so thats normal, okay.

I'll get some pics up later :)

I did my part to reduce solid waste and make Exeter Subaru more green, so i'm keeping this turbo as paperweight

kinda off topic here but got to do with oil changes. why the hell does my oilfilter keep leaking a little oil. ive taken my car to the sameplac for 2 1/2 years and each time the oil filter leaks. are they using ****ty filters.(jiffy lube in hampton)

There was a recall about 1.5 years ago for Subaru oil filters for this reason. Not sure what filters they are using but I would change places.

YES YES YES. They are using the cheapest junk filters known to man. It is somewhat common for the cheap filters to leak. I have heard of the filters even falling off in some cases. I would steer clear of them or bring your own filters. Bring a Purelator.

I always put a little grease around the rubber seal of the oil filter before putting it in just to make sure its a tight seal.

I just added a almost brandnew VF40 (less than 2k miles) to my turbo paperweight collection.

Bump for changing your oil!

Banjo bolt filter

Murphy2012

Its a ***** to get to FYI do dealerships really check them becuase i cant imagine they do.

Bu11dogg2
02-16-2009, 04:28 PM
No,

What happens most times is that the person does their own, or a jiffy lube special and doesn't use proper materials or oil, or they go a ton of miles without an oilchange.

99% of the time the car will throw a CEL for P0011 or P0021 and all they will do is an oil change to solve it. The turbo oil retunr pipes and filter become clogged and it starves the turbo.

In most cases it starves the engine too.... Kaboooom!

Brass shavings in the oil pan = bad turbo

silver metal shavings in the oil pan = bearings

Murphy2012
02-16-2009, 04:30 PM
Yup, I got ya. I was wondering cause I checked mine a couple months back after one year of having the vf39 in and no clogging there. Probably wont check it for another year or so.

Bu11dogg2
02-16-2009, 04:32 PM
If you do your oil changes on time you should be all set, doesn't hurt to check once a year though :)

I would say if you're just running a stock TD04, remove the screen. They're a hell of a lot cheaper to replace than a rod bearing.

Ok, I am getting two camshaft codes (P0011 and P0021) and my turbo is not boosting, it made a bunch of noise yesterday and then total power loss. The oil level is fine and all ... but here is the kicker this engine had a major failure due to mechanic error on an oil change (pinched the o-ring on the oil filter and it all ran out) fried the turbo and motor. It happened about five thousand miles ago and she has had two oil changes since then ... do you think they didn't replace the banjo bolt and the screen was clogged with crap and starved the turbo. I pulled the intercooler and there is what looks like fine bronze filings in the intercooler and the hose from it to the throttle body. Anyone want to comment?

Evoeater
11-04-2009, 09:06 PM
bronze..thats bearings..not sure what turbo thrust bearings look like but it could be worse such as the motor itself

Mariah05XT

Anyone got a stock turbo for sale? :-(
