My center diff in my new tranny has failed. I'm trying to figure out what caused it. I'm using 4.5qts of redline 75W90NS. I installed the tranny in the beginning of november, but it's only had a good clutch since thanksgiving. The problem first became noticeable to me after the first big snowstorm. This also coincided with me mounting my winter tires/wheels. However, they are all evenly worn (i used them last year).

My theory is that the large amount of work the center diff was put through driving on snow was enough to kill it. I'm planning on throwing my old RS diff in it, but I want to make sure that it's not a problem elsewhere on my car that caused the failure.

Anyone have any idea?

All 4 snows the same thread depth?

You might have just got a bad tranny.... Do you know the history of the old car?

nah, it's very possible it could have belonged to a mad tyte drifter from JDM land. My loss I guess, haha.

Yeah all the snows are the same depth, rotated them once mid season last winter.

V5 STi or V6 WRX or STi. They all used the exact same tranny.

How bad did it fail? Like driving a RWD now right?

Well, all the research I've done has pointed to it definitely being the center diff. I'll be replacing (for now) with the one from my RS. The other thing that sucks is apparently the input shaft bearing from the tranny is doinked too.

exactly how dose it feel to drive the car in a low traction situation
with the diff being ca-ca

so you need a new bearing? is that a subaru dealer only part?

Probably, but the difficulty lies in that you have to disassemble the entire tranny to get at the input shaft bearing. This means I have to remove the bastard again. I'd prefer to get it professionally repaired because you can really jack up a tranny if you don't know what you're doing. this means my only transportation will be out of commission for a couple weeks.

I guess it's looking more and more likely that I'm gonna get a DD with my taxes this year.

It feels fine. Loose surfaces is where it wants to be. the car is essentially in locked 4wd when the diff gets hot enough. What I've noticed is it's much easier to get the car around because there's no delay for the fluid to heat up, it's kinda awesome. Too bad there's not snow on the roads all the time

Humm so it basicly just wants to go in to dorifto mode
dose it get squirly in a straight line in low traction

What is the symptom diagnosis for a failed center differential. I would think if it failed then it would no longer transmit power to a certain direction. As in front or rear wheels.

I would think intermittent power shifts once the snot contined within burnt off or up
Did the car smell of sulfer at full accel or WOT
thats one of my symptoms
