View Full Version : '08 STi - Manual calls for 4.2 qts of oil...I put in 4.5...will this be a problem?

So, I put in 4.5 qts on my first oil change. My dipstick (on the side with the writing) reads as perfectly filled up to the "F" hole. However, on the backside of the dipstick, the oil line reaches about 4mm past the hole. This occurs consistently, as I have checked it about 10 times. Do I have a problem? Should I drain the oil and put back in only 4.2 qts?

Thanks for your help.

no your fine just remember not to do it next time its constant over filling that will cause problem leaks down the line

The manual is bogus anyway. Mine says 4.2 quarts and it takes more like 4.6. 4.6 is the magic number for me.

It also depends on the oil filter you are using. Which one of the OE filters or an aftermarket. So take that into account.

End of the day you are going to need to experiment to see what is right for you.

Ya, like Nate said, the filter also takes up around .2 - .3 qts extra from what the book lists. They usually say, X amount in the engine and .X amount if filter is replaced. Who would change oil without replacing filter, I dunno, maybe its a Jap thing.

That specific filter was cut open by some guy and it was show to be nothing but a repackaged WIX which was one of the junkiest filters he came across.

http://www.bescaredracing.com/sti/oil/filters/

Go to that link and download the xls file. It is very detailed and I am sure will change your mind about Napa Gold/WIX.

I see, but I have been using it since it's first oil change and no issues thus far.

i doubt you will see any either if you change your oil on a regular bases

Stopper?

subaru filters have a plug that engages when the motor turns off that prevents oil from draining into the filter.

It's pressure driven.

For the same price why wouldn't you use a filter with double the filtering media?

But then again it is just information and you can interpret it how you want.

Thanks for the replies all. I have read through that "cut" oil filter analysis also....and the Subaru filter looks to be FAR superior to any of the other brands the guy took apart. I am using the Subie black filter.

Thanks again.

more filtering media doesn't always mean better filter.

The oil has to circulate, not get caught up.

Well by that logic I don't think I want to buy the OEM filter which is supposed to be the best.

no, that would make it the best

I understand both Randy and Nate's arguments. Napa Oil filters cost me $0, which is pretty cheap if you ask me. I have not run into one problem with it yet, so thats how it will remain for me.

You just said more filtering media doesn't make it a better filter. The OEM filter has the most filtering media.

So that must mean the OEM filter is designed to get the oil caught up?

But then again less filter media means it catches less stuff and can be used longer before it clogs and becomes useless.

More filtering media means it catches more stuff and clogs sooner making it useless sooner vs later.

So which one is best hahahahahaha.

I think I will stick to OEM or Purelator especially since I don't take my oil changes a long time.

I think we need to have the what oil do you use and why thread. Also maybe a thread filled with information about OIL so people can educate themselves as to how oil works and the differences between say synthetic and dinosaur oil. Also the various synthetics. Like the fact that some synthetics stick to the filter media and clog the oil filter twice as fast and in a case like that a high media oil filter would be less than ideal.

Possibly cause a failure. Anyway we should have a thread.

It has the MOST efficient medium for filtering.

I'm talking flow charicteristics not filter thickness.

I have an aftermarket and a subaru filter I show customers. They both came off a car on the same day.

The aftermarket stopped dripping oil (when upside down) after about 20 minutes.

The subaru filter has been dripping for 2 weeks now

Waiiiiiit. Thats not a fair comparison. Was the same oil used? Same exact miles driven on same motor? Too many variables for that IMO.

I use the oem filter. I saw that link that nate posted a long time ago and have been using them ever since.

Yep especially when you are comparing a 1.29 aftermarket filter vs a 6 or 7 dollar filter.

If you choose a filter make it either Purelator or OEM. The two best choices and not to mention they are both made by Purelator unless they have changed Manufacturers. Nissan Filters have a very similar construction to OEM scooby. Makes me wonder if Purelator makes them also.

I wish I knew more though to say 100% I know who makes such and such product.

I was under the impression that oil filters only filtered when oil pressure dropped. I.e. the filter is cut out of the loop when you're on the gas, and the filter only works when you're at or close to idle.

granted, it's probably not the best comparison...

I don't tell customers about the drip factor, only compare size and function.

sometime I am going to do this comparo for myself and look with my own eyes.
