View Full Version : WTF, got pulled over

the other night, around 10:30pm
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n282/squeethebee/ghey2.jpg
The green line was my driven path from Interstate 91 into greenfield, the red/yellow circle was the parking lot where the state cop was sitting.
I got off highway, and hadn't seen another car since the previous exit, so I had my high beams on, as it was nite time. Rolled off the highway, didn't really even notice him sitting in a parking lot with his lights off, and never shut them off because as I mentioned, there was no other cars, but shortly after I pulled down Wildwood ave, he pulled me over.
I get the "Do you know why I pulled you over?" Obviously I didn't, having not done anything, and when I told him as much, he stated "You had your high beams on"
So, since when has driving with your high beams on, when there are no other cars present on the road, became illegal? The only thing I can think is he was just being an ass, maybe because I had clear taillights and am in my mid-twenties? Anyone else get this, or know if its for some reason against the law?
Thoughts, comments?

BTW, the clear taillights were stock in the '06 WRX I was driving, not stupid aftermarkets.
And before anyone asks, I was not speeding, and had two other people in the car with me who will verify that under oath, or you guys could just believe me, lol.

Cops will use stupid excuses to check and see if you've been drinking. Kinda like the license plate light out. Another lame excuse. I'm assuming you didn't get a ticket.

there actually is some law about driving with high beams on in a more densely populated area. if there are streetlights you aren't supposed to have them on.

Yeah, I didn't get a ticket. Still I wasn't driving erratically or speeding or anything, and was no where near the side of town with all the bars.
I've never heard of that law about the street lights, i would think the more visibility to see things that might be dangerous the better, ie. animals, children, road debris and whatnot.
It seems more like wasting my time that doing his job, I just didn't see any probable cause for the stop.

I guess its just been a while since I've been pulled over for some bull**** reason, so I forgot to just accept that state cops in greenfield have no real job to do.
The other possibility is that they are just staking out that spot due to the other subaru jack assery that goes on there *cough* next to bond auto.

Staties are the most anal ones. I swear they read the traffic code before they go to sleep every night. The only cops that have given me trouble for my exhaust are staties. But seconding what others have said, 10:30 is primetime for drunk driving, and that's cops' bread and butter. Or should I say jack and coke...or maybe black and tan.

I sure have been. Hell, my plate's been ran while parked in my driveway. I know they were looking for someone else, but come on. Makes for big fun when your mom gets word from a coworker that your name was going across the police radio for an unknown reason.
I left the bar one night with a Greenfield cop sitting parked about 50 feet away. I was Stage 2 with the STi axle-back at the time. He didn't follow me. However, 15 minutes later I was followed home from McDonalds by, I'm assuming, a different Greenfield cop.

eh its a beautiful back road that is just posted with an extremely low speed limit and nobody cares to change it. theres no speed trap on it but the cop saw me leave the bar and decided to follow me up the road. he was a ways back when I turned onto the road and i didnt even know if it was a cop. the road is curvy so i sped up to not find out. when I saw lights coming around the bend behind me i knew it had to be a pig so i slowed down and he pulled me over. I wasnt clocked but we both knew i was moving quickly...

540 CMR 22 ;)
The law says
We start off with the basic question: Is it ever illegal to use your high-beam headlights?
Indeed, it is.
The Code of Massachusetts Regulations, Chapter 540, Section 22, "Failure to Dim," says you must flick off your high beams when you're within 500 feet of a car approaching in the opposite direction -- a considerable distance.
You're also supposed to kill your high beams whenever "substantial" objects, such as other cars or people, are visible within a distance of 350 feet, or whenever you're in a Massachusetts Turnpike Authority tunnel.
"The operator shall regulate the headlamps so that no dangerous or dazzling light shall" shine, the law says.
The general fine is $35 for a first offense, $75 for a second, and $150 for a third, though the oncoming car rule doesn't apply to cars traveling on divided highways, said Lieutenant Dana Pagley, commander of the State Police traffic program section.
Key point bolded.

did you see anything specific on auxiliary lighting? like the lights on my truck? i basically don't let anyone see the driving lights on-road--i use them like people use high-beams, and the fogs only come on in bad weather.. but people dont even like my low-beams on the truck, so with the addition of the fogs in snow/rain/fog, they hate me.

I'd have to look into the Auxiliary lighting specifically, but from what I've heard: You're allowed your main headlights and a set of fog lights, and that's it. Lighting beyond that is considered "for off road use" and must be covered.
Like I said, I'd have to look into laws specifically, but that's what I've been told.

Its not illegal to drive with your high beams on, but he was probly just making sure they were not your low beams, some headlights out there are brighter than the law allows, but the only time you usually run into that problem is with HID's.

Its not illegal to drive with your high beams on, but he was probly just making sure they were not your low beams, some headlights out there are brighter than the law allows, but the only time you usually run into that problem is with HID's.
See my post earlier in the thread regarding high beams in densely populated areas.

I get to go to court on the 24th for my "yellow line" violation. I still can't believe they want $100 for crossing over the yellow line.
