In the next couple of weeks, Brandon (wagonmafia) and I will be doing transmission swaps. I'm doing a 6 speed swap I aquired from Nate, and Brandon is taking my 5 speed and swapping it for his automatic in his 02 wrx wagon. We will be documenting the swaps in this thread and taking pictures along the way. We will be doing these swaps in Farmington NH at Nick S.'s house. If any one is interested in helping out or just hanging out to watch, that would be cool.

I know I priced a bunch of stuff for Brendan but I'm in Georgia right now. I'll be back to work on Wednesday December 3rd so if there is any parts you guys need for these swaps let me know 2-3 days in advance (at least) in case it's something that will be coming from out of New England.
Also, not sure which days you guys are doing these swaps but starting December 6th the dealership parts department and service department will be open on Saturday from 7:30am-1pm. If for some reason you need a part while doing these swaps and it's a Saturday you can come in or call us up during those hours for parts.
Nick
(I'll be taking the first saturday on December 6th, me and julie will be rotating back and forth)

It can't end. That is the nature of modding your car. Even when you get to the fictional end there is still some other thing you could do to improve it.

Will do but the parts aren't going in to the same year chasis in the least. I"ll see if I can "borrow" an aunt's VIN that has the right year and model and everything. Last time I checked I was told I would have to either order a LOT of little parts to make up the whole or find one in a junk yard and have yet to find one. 2 years later.....:spin:
Brandon if yhou stall on a maden take off I'll laugh. That's why I'm not ready to go to manual as I only have one car running at a time and don't get enough practice for 6-9 months at a time so I'm not ready to let go and add the clutch just yet.

To get back ot, now I'm looking for a clutch/flywheel combo plus a 6 speed shift knob. That is the last piece I need for the swap. I know Brandon is still looking for a pedal setup also. I found a wiring diagram to make the auto to 5 speed install a lot easier. :)

If you don't have a VIN that's fine. What you'll need to tell me through PM is the model/year you want the parts for and a list of parts you need.
Can't speak for what you were told 2 years ago but we'll have to see what is available. Without a VIN it'll make it interesting to try and match up which part you need. If we get multiple part numbers for the same part I'll just have to see if we can eliminate some and if any remain then you'll just have to decide which one you want to try.

could he give you someone elses vin# just as long as its the same year tranny?
TrickyDik
11-30-2008, 10:53 PM
Sure can. Getting the last 8 digits of the VIN makes it so only parts that fit that specific vehicle will show up. Otherwise we have to go in by model and year vehicle (i.e. Impreza 2002-2008), then find the part we're looking for, then scroll through what could amount to 10-15 different part numbers for an impreza made between 2002-2008. Sometimes it's not so bad because it'll provide a little more description before a part number such as "2004-2005 205 +w +s" which means the part fits both the sedan version and wagon version of an Impreza equipped with the 205 motor. Sometimes we don't get so lucky and that description isn't there and that's when it becomes a guessing game.
So it's not that we're trying to be difficult or cut our work load down (obviously the easy way is VIN versus the time consuming search without a VIN), it's that we really want to gaurantee you're getting the exact part you're looking for and that it will 100% fit the vehicle (or in cases such as this, fit a assembly that came out of that vehicle).
Hopefully that helps explain it a little more and makes it so you don't think we're trying to be lazy or jerks about it. We want a VIN to make sure we provide you the best service possible and prevent you from getting the incorrect part. Being an enthusiast myself and work on my car, I know how much it can suck to deal with incorrect fitments.
Thanks,
Nick

I do understand seeing all the money plans go out the window just for one day but I think it's worth it for them. Yeah I could sure use the money. The more I dump into my current Auto loan the better I feel. With the rest of this 6 speed money and the sale of my Bugeye my loan will be gone!
At this point I am just giving the bank extra money in interest. I also have learned I hate Auto loans. They are a huge rook. Lesson of this is not to get an Auto loan. EVER!

Swap still on hold due to wedding planning/expenses. I'm deploying to Qatar next month for 45 days, and I'll be double dipping from my civilian job and my military pay, so I should come back with a big chunk of tax free cash to spend.:D
