Just curious as to what you had/have and what you thought/think of it :)
I had an ACT 2.5 RS with 4 puck clutch plate and 14 pound fly wheel on a 2005 Legacy GT.
Got A LOT of clutch chatter and it wasn't the friendliest in traffic.
But gotdam.... that thing would hook up and not let go :)
Def a great clutch for you 0-100 chasers :)
Cost me about $450 for parts (in 06) and and $350 install.

I had a spec stage 1 Lightweight organic clutch and a 14 lb spec lightweight flywheel on my 04 wrx with ra gears. I think I got a killer deal for 585 or something like that from rich at maddad.
It was an ok clutch, alot of chatter and you had to launch the car pretty much every time or would bog but that was mostly the flywheel fault.

i have a stage 2 kevlar street clutch along with 14lb flywheel in my car, big difference in autoX as far as low end. With the new 2.0 i cannot Wait to see how it pulls! They are both Competition clutch, cost was around $600 for the combo

14lb for autoX?
Robk0000
10-29-2008, 04:32 PM
yeah. It was a HUGE difference! Stock wieghed 28 lbs!
Bu11dogg2
10-29-2008, 04:42 PM
Seems a bit light.... wouldn't you want at least 18-20 for autoX?
Robk0000
10-29-2008, 05:17 PM
for auto x no, you want the engine to rev up fast so you can leave turns quicker.
Bu11dogg2
10-29-2008, 05:23 PM
I was thinking heavier flywheel = catch faster with clutch plate.
Basic laws of inertia.
Robk0000
10-29-2008, 05:27 PM
maybe but the less weight you have to turn the faster it will rev.
Also laws of inertia i think. Autox is more of acclerating faster and slowing down.

i had the same clutch and it failed after 6,000 miles of LIGHT driving with proper break-in on the 99 Legacy. SPEC customer service was horrendous and wouldn't stand behind their product. Ended up going back to Suby clutch.

hmm I had pretty good luck with mine. I think 15k miles and 100-150 drag strip runs:devil: I feel bad for who ever ended up buying that car after I traded it in:lol:

ive had my setup for about 20,000 miles. And its on the new motor, im not expecting it to last long but i do hope do get atleast another 20k

i had an exedy organic and it chattered ALOT
then i upgraded to an act street clutch and resurfaced flywheel (98 rs tranny w/wrx engine) and i love it, its hard and catches very well. and its amusing watching people stall it :p
Bu11dogg2

I stalled in reverse ALL the time with mine
Kevin

The stalling was kind of funny with my 04 wrx. The salesmen stalled it 4 times in a row when I traded it in lol.

When i went to F1dyno for theyre last cheap dyno day, i watched one of techs there stall my car out 3 times pulling out of the parking spot.
I love watching people stall out, its great. Especially the people learning how to drive a stick and you find yourself behind them.

stalling is the best when people actually KNOW how to drive stick but stall anyways.. we all do it, but watching people do it is hilarious
at the first dyno day after my clutch install the guy stalls it a few times then getting on the dyno he's like 'what is this, a 3 puck clutch?!' no just a hard act street clutch :D *muuahhhahahahaha*

2 for you
had a 6 puck sprung racing beat in the 85 rx7 with a 15lb flywheel
that thing clamped with the force of a 357mag did'nt chatter that bad
LOVED IT loved watching the water drops on the windsheild dance under hard accel
just installed a "sti" 8mm organic clutch and pressure plate on an 02 wrx at the dealership I now work at good feel but a little too chattery for my tastes
I'm in need of a new one now. Probably going to go with a stock clutch, or comparable. Slipped a bit tonight merging onto the highway in first and then slipped going into second. Still grabs though, just not as hard so i still have a little time left in it. Oh well. Probably going to put a new or slightly used resurfaced flywheel on it too. I don't think i'll ever need a lightweight one.
recommendations??

I would look at the oem exedy replacements. I think there pretty cheap or talk to nick at exter I'm sure they might be able to hook you up.

Why do you say that Randy?

im not really sure why you wouldnt want to resurface the flywheel, if its not warped and you dont want an aftermarket why spend the extra cash for a new one? Same deal with brake rotors.
Subygirl8330
11-09-2008, 08:07 PM
i agree... i resurfaced my stock flywheel and paired it with my act clutch and it does great with 291 awhp! i see no reason to not resurface the flywheel to save money instead of getting a new one for $xxx

Are you using the stock RS transmission or did you go with a another model?
Well my car has some pretty bad clutch chatter right now so i just decided to do everything new. I got a new exedy lightweight flywheel for pretty cheap, but i'm still undecided on a clutch. I'm also going to do the snout repair kit thingy just incase thats causing some of the chatter.

i have horrible clutch shudder, especially when its cold. OMG i hate it.
when mine is cold, it's pretty smooth. It's when it heats up that it chatters. Leads me to believe that something warps when it heats up

yep!! i love my tranny i'm gonna keep it forever :p
My exedy clutch Chattered like a *****! but i love my act, no problems.

I got an act in my Leggy and it chatters like a *****.
Kevin
11-10-2008, 11:28 PM
really your act chatters alot?
I was leaning towards there xtreme street clutch with the full face disk.
does it hold your power with ease?
read on nasioc about exedy and ACT. people report that they have issues with both of them. some poeople have good luck, some don't. It's a hit or miss i guess.
I was going to pick up an exedy stage 1 organic clutch, but all i have read is how horrible they are for clutch chatter. People have had better luck going with a 4 puck. So i think i'm just going to get a cheap exedy OEM replacment for ebay for a whole 150 bucks. Seems pretty cheap considering that most online places charge 250 for the same thing...

Why do you say that Randy?
If you resurface it you loose a layer on top of what has already been burnt off.
Why put a fresh clutch plate with a used flywheel?
It's not like brake pads where they wear out 3x's faster then rotors.
Flywheels aren't overly expensive.
Kevin
11-10-2008, 11:58 PM
becarefull with buying clutches on ebay . I heard alot of them are knockoff's.
but I'm sure if there a big seller of them there probly legit though.
my stage 1 organic spec didn't chatter at all on my 04 wrx.

You loose a layer of the pressure plate, but if they step the flywheel correctly than the distance of the pressure plate travel from fully disengaged to fully engaged will be the same as it is stock. so you really don't loose anything.
Your right about brake pads, but wouldn't you have the rotors resurfaced before you put new pads on if they are out of wack instead of just buying new ones.
An ACT streetlite flywheel is $250 bucks and a resurface job is $75. Some people just don't have the extra cash.

In the grand scheme of things that $175 makes sense any way you look at it.
People who resurface flywheels are cheap
Kevin

nothing is wrong with resurfacing the flywheel if theres enough meat on it.
thats what I'm doing with my flywheel most likely. I hate lightweight flywheels.
I know many people that do it in diffrent cars from mild to running 10.9 in the 1/4.
common practice thats been done for years.

I would say that all depends on how your driving it. Drag racing? daily street car? If your drag racing you want make sure you break it in really well other wise you can heat glaze it launching, or no lift shifting if your into that.
Kevin has more money in parts on the shelf than he does in the car.

drag racing...probably never
Mostly daily driven and hoping to make atleast3-5 races/ auto x this year thats all.
Got the clutch in and its chattery but I was told this would go away for the most part after brake in. I am getting used to it and other than that its just as smooth as the stock.
