The three day test at Sepang kicked off today ahead of the Malaysian Grand Prix which takes place a week Sunday.
With just one car permitted per team under the 2007 testing rules, ten drivers were in action today with just Spyker Ferrari opting to sit out the test.
Robert Kubica may have said that Ferrari are on a different planet in terms of pure pace, but he took the fastest time today in his F1.07 with a lap in 1:36.187s.
Kimi Raikkonen was second fastest in his Ferrari, just a tenth of a second shy while Alex Wurz ended his day of running with the third fastest time in the Williams Toyota.
Rubens Barrichello will be encouraged to find his Honda RA107 much closer to the ultimate pace than it was in Melbourne as the Brazilian lapped the Sepang circuit six-tenths off the ultimate pace.
Pedro de la Rosa was fifth fastest in his McLaren Mercedes ahead of Toyota tester Franck Montagny and Takuma Sato in the Super Aguri Honda.
David Coulthard was on duty for Red Bull Renault and set the eighth fastest time while Nelson Piquet Jr had limited running in the Renault due to mechanical gremlins and was just ninth fastest ahead of Scott Speed in the Toro Rosso Ferrari.
