Last week I ran across a great deal on a used fp20g turbo that I couldn't refuse, so I bought it, and installed it along with a set of DW850 injectors I had bought for my new 2.0l engine build. I figure I will run this set up until I swap out my motor and get a big turbo.
Here are a few pics of the turbo. Notice it isn't water cooled, just oil.

First I installed the injectors. This was real easy because when I did this before I left all the hard to reach bolts out of those pita green brackets. I learned this time and left them out for good. These take more than half the install time to remove and reinstall!
Here is one side out.

Here is the fuel rail loose and ready for the new 850s.

Those new 850s vs the old 550 pinks.

Next was the turbo swap. Just remove the dp, coolant lines, oil line, and up nuts and the turbo is out. Slide the new one down in and make sure to use antiseize on the dp and up bolts to keep them from freezing on.
Here are some pics of the old 16g and 20g. Who need to spool anyways?

Here is the end result.

So far I, I have the injectors tuned and the car idles like stock. I'm only pushing 19psi so far and the car pulls like a jet. The turbo spools at 4k rpm but I still haven't done any fine tuning yet, and I have an equal length header on it's way to help things out. When I get my new clutch in I will make it to the trakh and see what it runs.

NICE:D thats quite the difference between the 16g & 20g:devil: do you tune it yourself? are you getting a turbo timer since it isn't water cooled? external wastegate setup??
good luck with tuning and also at the track!

Thanks man. yeah I'm tuning it myself. I need a turbo timer but I'm doing it manually for now. For now I'm staying internal wg until I go with a bigger turbo for my built motor.

car is absolutely insane. even just the way its tuned now it runs like a raped ape.

The 16 will go on the wagon in a few weeks. Hopefully that biatch will come to life.

Nice work kevin cant wait to get my **** sorted.

external wastegate setup??

I'm no expert or anything but you can see the wastegate flapper pretty clearly in the tubine housing picture.

If Kevin was going to go to an external gated set up I'm sure he would have just bought a 20g that is made for an external gate not buy an internaly gated turbo and try to convert it.

its not a big deal to convert them a bracket or a little weld on the flapper. they come from the turbo supplier with the flapper welded most of the time. I know two or three people that converted there iwg turbo to ewg due them getting a deal on it.

I'll probly go ewg but thats with a 35r or something. i don't think the gains of ewg are worth the money unless you have awfull boost creep and spiking and its the last resort to controll your boost, or a big ass turbo like gt30 or gt35.

I had no idea they made subie turbos set up for an external gate buy just welding the flapper. Seems hacked to me. Personaly I wouldn't buy a turbo that came this way because it just seems cheap. I'd be looking for something with a turbine housing that doesn't require the flapper at all.

External gates may not seem like a big deal to you subie guys but DSMs boost creep like crazy without them even on really small turbos.

I don't see how a welded closed wg 'sounds cheap'? It is fairly common practice.

got a ride in the the car and its pretty quick for not being tuned .but not as quick as nicks red geo though lol

I dont see the problem of welding it shut either, i mean this is sealed, the exhaust flows through the port right next to this one. I would imagine you would see no difference in performance if you actually changed the flange and got rid of the flapper entirely, or just weld it ****. then again, im not to bright when it comes to forced induction...
