Car is fully operational, OBDII works, throwing a code for o2 sensor that is missing, and the fuel tank light is on because of the broken fuel sending unit.

I'm guessing since Jeremys tuning it must be obd2? did you get the motor from ECS too? do you allready have injectors for the VF? if not, I've got a few for sale.
good luck with the swap, its quite the project for a weekend but its possible. me and my buddys did it:D

i just opned up the entire harness and looked at all the wires...**** that im not touching it, lol. It came in a big storage tote, 35 lbs of wire. Maybe i will get back the extras so i scrap the copper and get some cash back. Hahaha

Hey bud, good luck with the swap. Good to see the old wrx engine go to some use and a few more smiles. I might have some extra hoses here when I get my samcos in so I can send those over to you by mail if you grab that intake or anything also. let me know!

I got the spt intake so i wont be needing the stock one. Hoses i will most likely need, maybe a map too cause theres too many of them.
header with integrated up-pipe came in today. Pics up later.

Anyone have a stock bpv i can buy, or can someone recommend a quiet non gay blowoff valve, and finally is the sensor on the air intake the maf or is it just another air flow sensor, also part # ne1?

the alternator & bracket should be transferable, if it puts out enough power. if not i have one sitting in my garage, i just stole the pulley off it. I'm not sure about the power steering, mine had come on my engine when i did my swap.
Robk0000
07-13-2008, 07:49 PM
they are pretty much identical motors, except i believe they changed the design of the brackets. They still work the same, just look different.
I did come up with a few more questions today.
-There is a tube going from the turbo inlet hose to the bpv. Now with a bov, there is no point of attachment to the hose. What happens with this hose?
-After examining several wrx motors and sti motors today, i realized im missing a few parts, that im not sure are nessicary. There is a plastic pump on the drivers side just next to the fuse box, what is that and is it nessicary, also the radiator on the 2.2 is very different than the wrx radiator. Would i be better off getting the wrx radiator and haviong all the coolant lines connected or is there no real differnce?
Murphy2012
07-13-2008, 08:18 PM
I think you need a WRX radiator. The BPV line can be removed or kept for recirculation, IIRC.
Robk0000
07-13-2008, 08:36 PM
okay, radiator is all set.
Any clue about that plastic pump?
Bu11dogg2

I think you need a WRX radiator. The BPV line can be removed or kept for recirculation, IIRC.
It can be plugged or routed to your CAI.
For idle reasons it may have to go to the CAI.
BoostedTechnology
07-14-2008, 03:22 PM
If you can get a picture of the plastic pump i can check it out for you. The only pump i can really think of over there is a washer motor pump but thats on the bottom of the washer tank.
Robk0000
07-14-2008, 04:47 PM
yeah, definately not that one. I noticed it on 2.5 motors im not sure if its the same on the 2.0, let me get a pic.
Robk0000
07-14-2008, 05:44 PM
hey terry, can you take a pic of this thing i know i saw it in your engine bay, just to the right of the block and to the left of the wiper fluid reservoir. You will see it, i think your father told me it was an electric pump something for emissions? Ive never heard of a thing.

its only 5k obo so damn tempting
Robk0000
07-14-2008, 06:52 PM
a little rough, wow i doubt he did any maintenance or cleaning to that thing!
but yeah, same deal only im hoping that it will be cleaner. lots of new parts so i think it will be a better setup too. I dont see the plastic pump thing on this motor so im assuiming this pump is only on the 2.5 turbos.
Kevin
07-14-2008, 06:56 PM
ohh I know what you talking about its the air pump for emissions thats on the 06-07 wrx's.
they sell delete kits for it. you don't need that.
ya that car is beat hard but its the same motor and stuff.
Robk0000
07-14-2008, 07:05 PM
yup, i was told it had something to do with emissions, but i only noticed it on the 2.5 motors, thanks for clarifying that. I think all i need now is the crossmember, maf sensor and the coolant reservoir. I should be all set with the corssmeber and reservoir through nasico, but i dont know what the going rate is on the maf from the dealer? anyone
Bombay994

Well, right now i got something going with a dude on nasioc, hes going to give me the crossmember coolant reservoir and all the hoses that go with the coolant reservoir for $120 shipped. which seems to be a VERy good price at the moment. Suppose to get bacfk to me tomorrow. I will call you and we can talk about other stuff i may need.
thanks.

Update: Swap is being put off for a while, maybe October.
Electrica portion and tuning costs ALOT!
and Synaptic 3 is doing both.
Robk0000
07-16-2008, 08:05 PM
ECS sells the pnp wiring kit.
Heres the catch...you need to be a shop that has the abilty to install and troubleshoot it. Im going to email synaptic 3 and see if they would be willing to order it and i will pay for it. Most likely not but, its worth a try?
BoostedTechnology
07-17-2008, 07:21 AM

Robk0000
07-17-2008, 04:45 PM

i only opened it up, laid everything out and just made sure i had all the nessicary components. if i get a used car, i will be doing the harness myself. So it will take a loooooong time. im just going to get rid of most of the stock buttons and switches. And go diy on a carbonfiber dash. But thats only if i get another car. Which would be badass! haha
pjk91
07-22-2008, 09:28 PM
are you sure you want to do a cf dash? you're already hurting for cash. focus on getting the thing running and without any quirks first. i'm telling ya it's not going to ho hum happy days every day when you do one of these swaps. there is going to be stuff that comes up! ****, i think i have an exhaust leak! my "plan" was to drop the pulley like a few months ago, but that enever happened because other stuff broke! keep a reserve in the bank...
jesus i sound like my dad.
Robk0000
07-23-2008, 04:33 PM
i didnt mean by doing a whole ****ing dash in cf. You just have no mechanical skills which is why you are lecturing me about how modifiying cars CAN be a pain. Espeically if you dont want to fix it or dont know how to. which is your problem.

It has built in data acquisition for any sensors beyond what it normally reads. However as far as millage no. It only tracks engine on time. (kind of like a tractor -- total hours)

Just finished assembling the motor and all the bolt ons. Everything fits perfect. im still missing several parts so ill try and name them, also i cannot seem to find where several hoses go to. Pics on post 3 for assembled look.
-Large plastic Y fitting coming from just above the transmission mount. just behind the intake manifold and center of the motor. 1 of them goes to the intake manifold the other?
-The two lines on the intercooler, they must go somewhere?
-what looks to be a fuel filter, which is plumed between a sensor on the intake manifold. I had it before i tore apart the motor, now its gone...
-ontop of the throttle body there is two spots for sensors one is MAF the other is?
-All the 90 fittings on the turbo inlet, what the hell plugs into those?
-lastly, metal line for oil i think, going into the turbo, can i get the inlet tube somewhere, or do i need the vf39 rebuild kit?
Murphy2012
07-26-2008, 11:21 AM
You have to get the vf39 specific hose for the oil return line. The rest of the hoses come to my house and we can take a look at everything and see what we come up with.
Robk0000
07-26-2008, 06:03 PM
yeah, the hose is a tad short, but the hose is nothing special, im just trying to find all the little bits.

i'm still debating which hoses ur talking about, if its on the passenger side, on the back side i may know which ones your talking about, but i dont like to be wrong:iam:
-The two lines on the intercooler, they must go somewhere?
they sure do :D
-what looks to be a fuel filter, which is plumed between a sensor on the intake manifold. I had it before i tore apart the motor, now its gone...
that sucks
-ontop of the throttle body there is two spots for sensors one is MAF the other is?
theres 3 sensors on the throttle body, the tps, map and iac the very top one is the idle air control, the large one thats probably still attached(i think on the drivers side) is the tps, and the smaller one, that i believe is on the passenger side is the map sensor
-All the 90 fittings on the turbo inlet, what the hell plugs into those?
these are old pics before i got appropriately sized hoses, but maybe they'll be helpful

I dont know how to describe it, its a Y shaped piece... i will take pics later today. I think in the last picture you posted i do recognize a hose bent in a similar formation. I think it goes into 1 of the two lines on the intercooler piping
-The two lines on the intercooler, they must go somewhere?
they sure do :D
I knew it!

I have the metal line that goes into the turbo, but on the oil outlet on the turbo, i know i said inlet, but on the outlet there is a 1" nipple with a metal flange that bolts up onto the turbo, i need this adapter. And i dont wanna have to buy the $99.99 vf39 rebuild kit just for a $2.50 part. :D
Ill get some pics later so we can identify all the things i need.

did you find the part number for that? If not it's called a purge valve, and connects to the purge valve control solenoid, you might just be able to call them with this info to get the part number.

yeah i bought it, just waiting for it to come in. Im going to be working on it along with several other projects. So hopefully i will get it right the first time. I need to subscribe an 03 wrx to my alldata then i will start making some diagrams and such. Anyone know if tweeter will charge me and void my warranty if i wanna have them reinstall the alarm after i take it out?

Question about the above diagram, the purge valve, #23. Is that nessicary. Subaru wants $30 for it...
Swap update.
Picking the harness up tonight in portsmouth. Also, just finished the harness bar and belts. The 4 point harness from sparco is UNBELIEVABLE!
The installation uses 2 I bolts and the belts utilize quick disconnect clips if you wanna take it out. With the straps installed you are planted really hard into the seat. I mean you dont move around, at all!

Pre-swap bump...
im going to be ordering the last final parts tomorrow at subaru hopefully. 2 sensors, intercooler hose and maybe the passenger side intercooler bracket. Then when i get those, i will be setting my appt with ECS to do the electrical. Yeah, i gave up on that **** 25% done with it though. Ecs will be tuning, along with electrical harness. Murph, Nate if i call him and Terrys father will be along for the mechanical merge, and anyone else who decides to bring beer. Im thinking October 17th will be mechanical starts date, but this depends on ECS's schedule. I know they were booked out till OCtober last i checked.
Also, if you can think of something i may have missed or i should be getting, please post up.

AllWheelsDriven

dont u need 02 sensors for OBDII? i kno u can tune around the emissions and **** but u need at least a wideband to tune it right
kgj996
09-22-2008, 07:58 PM
You don't need all of your stock o2s, but it does need at least one to run and idle properly without going to a full standalone ecu. Your car only uses one or two to actually read your afr. The others are used to read egt to let the ecu know if the cats are burnt up or not. A wide band o2 is a must for tuning. There is no way to tune safely without one!
Robk0000
09-22-2008, 09:05 PM
I have got wideband afr, boost, egt and something else...wtf was it?

rest of the week, gut the interior for ecs, and get it ready for the engien harness merger.

I cannot believe how easy it is to get the motor out! I have everything out except the motor at the moment. Im having trouble seperating the tranny from the engine. But, radiator is drained and out, battery out, all lines disconnected and everything is working out WAY smoother than i anticipated except for the huge puddle of coolant in the driveway! oh well
Question for tomorrow, when seperating the transmission fromt he block do i have to do anything with the clutch control cable, ie disconnect or loosen it? Also, i have all 8 bolts out of the transmission, and im hitting the seal between the block and tranny with a chisel. is this the correct method? I will post pics when the new X-member is in.
Robk0000
10-10-2008, 08:20 PM
Motor is ready to be popped out, im going to wait for my help tomorrow morning to do so, besides this. I ran into a problem with the powersteering pump. Unfortunately the NA pump bracket is about 3" taller than turbo'd wrx motor bracket. So, my pump will be about 2" into the turbo inlet.
to summarize what happened, i bought a new bracket from subaru for $100...ghey.

Okay Okay!
Thanks bombay994 for all the help this morning. Taking that crossmember out would have been a real ***** all alone. But i did manage to drop the motor in and take it out twice after you left, 1 piece header up-pipes dont go in with the motor bolted down, lol.
Whats left? Well, i need to mount alternator, powersteering pump, intercooler, button down the missing bolt on the vf39 and plug in some hoses. Regarding hoses, i have a few im going to need help decidign where they go, so tomorrow i will get you some better pics along with a description. Im not writing a diy on this one because, well it was too easy. The big tmic BARELY fits right now, i closed the hood and you can hear it hit. My custom radiator fans have about 1/2" of gap between the pulleys and the fans. The motor looks big in the engine bay and im not quite sure how ecs does such an awesome job at tucking things in or hide them. Im going to play with it tomorrow morning and maybe start to strip the interior.
heres the pics.

hey rob, you dont need to weld the 3" flange on if I am thinking of the same thing. With mine I thought I would have to as well but borla made the ends of their pipes slightly bigger then 3", the replacement 3" flange should slide right in place after you remove the 3"-2.5" flange.

Cosworth has an sti with the reverse manifold and looks NAsty! Alternator doesnt seem to be in the way, but i believe you. I like it!
That would be a cool spring project.

you can buy brackets to move the alternator I think. there might be a few ways to get around that but I think its alittle harder. I know full race makes a fmic for reverse manifolds buts it like 2k lol.

nice, no pictures though. It seems like a really good idea and i bet its more cooling than a typical mic, but im going to try something different and maybe go with CO2 spray, alot cheaper and its fairly simple between the regulators, plumbing but i would have to find a cheaper electronic solenoid to shoot the gas. I think i could do it for under $200.
But thats another project for next year. I wanna get the car running good, then i will screw around with more mods.

I agree. Meth is fo teh winnarz! Along with I wouldn't want the CO2 tanks kicking around if you got into an accident. A nice puncture and watch it launch into your face.

I second the meth. It is a lot safer and cheaper in the long run. Plus you can push you car a little harder on track days and autox's if you wanted too.

prolly a stupid question, but where do you get Methane? i mean, co2 i can go anywhere, and its in a 12oz bottle hidden inthe trunk. Thats alot for that meth kit even with or without the tank.

I got the 3" exhaust flange from Brandon today, its actually the same size as the pipe i wanted it to slide around, lol. So i increased the pipe size with a hammer. Worked okay, but the pipe is 2" longer than needed none of the hangers work.
Im going to cut the pipe on the bandsaw tomorrow at work.

You mean methanol, Methane is a stinky gas produced by organic decomposition. Methanol is an alcohol that is used primarily in windshield washer fluid and other fuel additives along with a lot of chemistry applications. It costs $1.69 a gallon for washer fluid at wally world and it's a %40 mixture, which is a good mix for injection. 50/50 is the preferable, but washer fluid works fine for street applications. I just installed a trunk mount kit in my car and love it. It's cheap and easy to use.

HAHA, i was wondering about methane... Thats not bad i guess. Is meth even a noticeable cooler, i mean why not use water?
The mixture is 1/2 water, for the cooling, and the methanol increases octane of the fuel. Best of both worlds. Some people don't even use intercoolers with a good meth injection set up.
Robk0000
10-19-2008, 05:26 PM
i know didly **** about meth injection, my original plan was CO2 and spray into the intercooler cooling the air as it goes through. I am guessing with meth since there is an increase in octane this is being sprayed into the intake?
kgj996
10-19-2008, 05:39 PM
Yes, it's injected just before the throttle body. Some people run two injectors, one before the intercooler and one after. I just run one before the TB.

10-19-2008, 07:06 PM
you can run a retarded amount of timing ( at least on my eco) with meth. High compression + meth + boost = insane tq. But yeah, worth every penny. You can mix the meth at home it's not difficult stuff.

bad news bump, car wont be ready for another week. Yeah another week, two weeks turned into 1 month. They found some small stuff that had to be fixed which i should have caught onto but i guess in all of my eagerness to get it done. The car ran and was tuned two days ago, and was dyno'd at 283/288 at the wheels!
Great, yeah but the car isnt done. They have stupid **** like i said i should have done but i didnt.
Powersteering line i got on ebay had a minor crack, and was dripping discovered during the test drive, interior is partially back in, Crank shaft position indicator threw a code, come to find out the wires were ripped from the connector on motor, needs to be soldered in... stupid damn sensor.
thats it, they said it may be done today, but i told them im not driving 3 hours just to find its still not done. i may go get the car wednesday.

i have a few things i need to get done still before i can say the swap is 100% complete, as it stands right now the car is in complete driveable condition, it dyno'd in at 283 hp and 290 torque at the wheels. The numbers are a bit higher than what i was expecting but, im sure it will make the auto-x next season unbelievable!
list of stuff needs to be done,
-Rear o2sensor is non existant. The cable is in the engine bay and i need to do something with it, right now it is throwing a cel. I have a CEL eliminator kit i got for free from synaptic i think, install this and hope it works.
-Go back to stock BPV depending on how the tial reacts to teh boost
-interior needs reassembled, Harness bar, carpets, centerconsole and all the miscelaneous things i had in the car.
-radio, amp and components need to be reinstalled on the back panel behind the rear seat. Im going to remake that with some mdf and recess the amp to make it look purty.
-blizzacks NEED to be mounted, i think i will visit terrys shop.
-paint the lower portions of the door black to match the seats and dash.
that might be it...

the ecu requires a readout from both front and rear O2... the only one you can tune around is the sensor in the UP where applicable.
You can trick the ECU to think that the reading from the front and rear is normal, thus avoiding the CEL.
Nate8409
12-05-2008, 12:25 AM
The ecu only uses the oxygen sensors for cruising around town then it is trying to be emissions friendly.
WOT the computer refers to a table and uses that regardless of what the sensors say since they can't read that low or high anyway. Known as OL and CL which there are a whole bunch of threads about here and there.
Like when you take your car to be tuned. The tuner sticks a sensor in the tailpipe to get readings unless you have a wideband in the vehicle they can use.
I don't know open ecu so it may not have the ability to disable the light for certain codes.
Is that what you are using is open ecu Rob?
Subygirl8330
12-05-2008, 07:07 AM
open source can def disable the rear o2 code, since it normally goes on when your catless. ecs tunes open source and i believe ap now.
