Damn,

now this other guy on craigslist gets back to me after a month, and wants to sell me a v1 cobb ap that matches my car and is unmarried for $350.

man that is tempting.

i kinda want to go opensource though :-/ thoughts anyone?

:spin::spin::eek::eek::spin::eek:

Open source is rewarding if you know what you are doing.

For convience, safety and maximum power output I would go with the AP.

If you plan on building the car you will eventually need a dyno tune.

It's nice to have an AP so you can switch (easily) between maps.

Open source has come a long way..... if you are comfortable with it.... it can be your best bet.

His is definetly unmarried? For you being a nub, no offense, I would get the AP.

i ain't scared of no tuning!

plus i got all you guys to help me out if i got questions. :P

as long as i do my homework first, and make sure i have someone who knows what they are doing with me i would rather take the $350 i would have spent on the AP and get some sways / etc.

I still say go with the AP, if you are not satisfied you can always resell it. Wont go much lower than that for a long time.

AP.....:D

You have to have brass ***** to tune your own car....

I say AP... because its easy and it has resale value if you ever decide to go another route.

For the amount of money you will pay for the ap plus dyno tuning down the road, you could put into other mods and tune yourself. Even if you are new at it there is so much info out there and free base maps to get you pointed in the right direction. If it is an apv1 then you can buy the ST program to tune your self. It costs $250 I think, but it is another option, but at that point the ap is just used to flash you tunes, and you can do that for free with OS and a laptop. Plus you can data log. Thats my 2 cents.

If you get a V1 AP, you can also datalog, as the connector is serial.

hmm interesting i will seriously have to consider my options here.

ecu tuning i would by no means attempt to perform myself.. and i think I could definitely make it work with a bit of assistance + a pre-designed map.

however, the AP holds good resale value, and is the easy choice.

gonna have to mull this over for a bit...

Yes but you need to use the OS software to log....and you can't do anything about the information you logged with the ap unless you have the ST software.

cant use opensource software with the serial cable?

you can data log but not flash or read. you need a tactrix 1.3 to do that

Does the Tactrix cable plug in somewhere different?

I believe you that it is not straightforward to do with the cobb cable.... but in the end it is only a serial cable, and if it goes through the same port, then I fail to see how I cant use a serial connection any way I want to hack it

granted it might be a rollover cable, or some non-standard pinout, but I can use a breakout R232 to re-arrange the pins any way I want, in fact thats probably it... if cobb doesnt want you to use the cable, then the opensource software would be using a standard pinout, and the accessport AND datalog sofware uses the non-standard cobb pinout (possibly changing speed, parity and flow control, just to throw us off)

that being said, I have never even seen a tactrix cable, so maybe I'm full of it this morning. but serial is serial, and there is no way they are manipulating the stream within the cable, so serial IS serial, just maybe in a proprietary config.

If you want, you can borrow my tactrix and compare cables. All I know is that there have been threads on nasioc about this many times and there is even a tactrix knock off on ebay that can't read or flash, but it can datalog. There has to be some difference because my computer recognizes the cable as Tactrix 1.3, not just a serial cable.

I have ap v1 on my car. Its getting sold and I'm getting a open source tune from matt at dsg. the ap is same amount of money as the tune from dentsport. The cobb stage 2 map is pig rich and leaving a lot of power on the table. the cobb tune is a very conservative tune that anyone can use in varying weather condions and elevations. I would say go for a stage 2 open source flash then do some more mods and have it dyno tuned.

^ Cobbs tunes are always ultra conservative but still a great deal better then stock (like you said). Nothing can beat a Protune...(or custom tune) regardless of the source.

700 bucks for a tune from DSG?!?!?! Well that definetly takes them off my list for possible tuners...

^ No S......350 max from everyone I've ever heard get tuned.

350 for used AP, 350 max for tune..700...sounds like a win to me :D

Ya, I havent heard of a tune for more than 350 either, ever. When Jon was still running TDC, I got a brand new AP 2.0 and a tune for 900. I think thats a good deal. I have the AP still, but my vf39 isnt tuned....I need one, bad. I was thinking about giving the AP to the girl and getting an open source tune from Blkscooby.
