I'm sure many of you have already seen this, i'm just curious to see what you guys think?

I think it's not a bad idea. It's just that nobody will really be able to say anything until a product is developed and we see it.

Subaru needs to break out into the hybrid world with at least one hybrid model. Too many car companies have hybrid vehicles and with the worlds economy and oil production being the way it is, hybrid demands are going to skyrocket.

I'm not sure how sporty a hybrid, sub 17k car can be but I guess time will tell.

I'm never opposed to any idea like this until I see a product.

Conflicting report says that the Subaru-Toyota partnership is going to result in the Celica successor.

While I worry that Toyota will suck all of the fun and creativity out of this car, turning it into a Camry with an STi motor, I'm going to remain optimistic. Looking forward to an STi coupe.

Yea, an STi coupe would certainly make me look. I just hope body styling will be favorable and depending on the price I could be looking at jumping into one of those.

I hope its RWD or AWD... we don't need any more FWD sports car posers.

AWD celica, built off the old WRX platform with a Turbo boxer.

For real though....

2.5i RWD built off the celica platform is probable.

At a press conference in Japan today, Toyota CEO Katsuaki Watanabe finally confirmed that his company is jointly developing a pair of rear-wheel-drive sports car with Subaru. Each brand will get its own version of the car, which will be powered by one of Subaru's boxer engines, though the engine's displacement, power output and even number of cylinders is not yet known. We're also not sure if the Subaru version will feature the brand's trademark all-wheel-drive system either as an option or standard equipment, or whether Toyota might offer AWD as well in an homage to the Celica GT4 (we hope so!). The styling will most likely resemble the sketch that was published by Autocar yesterday, though we don't expect one car to be a rebadged version of the other. Mark your calendars for 2011, which is when the new sports cars are scheduled to arrive. They'll be riding on a brand new platform and be built in Japan at a new plant by Fuji Heavy Industries, the parent company of Subaru. Toyota also confirmed rumors this morning that it will be buying up more of Fuji, raising its stake in the company from 8.7% to 16.5%.

These RWD sports cars will mean a lot for both companies, as Subaru hasn't offered a performance coupe since the slightly odd SVX, and Toyota all but abandoned performance models after the Supra, Celica and MR2 were cancelled.

This could feasibly be my next car. My tentative life plan should have me living on my own again with all of my depts payed off within 3 years. I'll be 24 then, making a ****-ton of disposable income. I want to buy a sports car to modify into a barely street legal track car. That will give me a year to store it away and work on it before I turn 25, when insurance rates drop drammatically and I can put it on the road.

I was going back and forth between an STi (hawkeye), an S2000, or an imported S15 with an RB26DETT swap. I was leaning heavily towards the Impreza, since I have a bit more experience through owning one and doing research into the tuning of them. But if this car comes out as amazing as it's potential allows for it to be, and the aftermarket scene embraces it as much as I believe it will, I may have to choose this car in the end.

My formula for the dream STi coupe.

1) Symetrical AWD (naturally ;) )
2) Based on the GC chassis, not the heavier GD chassis. Screw safety requirements
3) 2.7L boxer based on the EJ257
4) Rear-mounted transmission for better weight distribution. Not sure how this would work in conjunction with their AWD system.
5) 5-speed manual
6) Body styling based on the GD cars, not the new Impreza.
7) Subaru-designed interior with Toyota-grade materials and fitment.
8) Priced around $35-$37K

this could be good! I was wondering when they would collaborate more, I just realized recently that Fuji Heavy Industries is owned (at least partially) by Toyota.

I think this is a winning idea... hopefully it gets killer MPG's because I cant even fathom what the price of gas will be 3 years from now.

Don't worry, we'll have complete control of all the oil fields in the mid-east by that time.
