my speedo is off 4 mph fast at 50mph in my 2006 sti. i am running stock tires that are practically brand new. the faster i go the more the error increases. i have taken the car to the dealer for the problem before and they say there is no error, and they can not do any thing about it. however my stopwatch, gps, and police rader guns all say im going slower then i really am. the speedo has been off for as long as a i owned the car and i am getting to the point it has gotten old. any one else have this same problem?

mines continuously is 3 mph fast. That is if you follow what a GPS will say.
my ford rangers wierd like yours though. At a slow speed its perfectly right on the dot. Faster i go the more it goes off.
Not the first ranger i've seen do it though so i am not too concered although the other ranger i seen do this has a 5.0L swap in it

Mine has been like that since the day I got it! I got 235/40 18s now and it is almost corrected.

I believe the law says they can have a 5%-10% margin of error.

Is that because police radars if not calibrated when they are supposed to be can be off by 5-10 mph? Or at least that's what I have heard I don't know for a fact.

if my car doesnt warm up before I start driving my speedo stops at 40mph. I just go off of the rpm's at that point

 I have heard of cars acting weird mechanically before they are warm but that's just weird.

it does it the most in cold weather, also.. winter time I almost never know how fast Im going.. I'll be on the highway and it'll finally kick on, jump to like 90, drop down to 10, then settle on whatever my speed ACTUALLY is
my stepbrothers 97 obs did it too :iam:

This is what Wiki says:
Error
Most speedometers have tolerances of some 10% plus or minus due to wear on tires as it occurs.[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)] Additional sources of error are tire diameter variations due to temperature, pressure, vehicle load, and nominal tire size.
Excessive speedometer error after manufacture can come from several causes but most commonly is due to nonstandard tire diameter, in which case the
percent error = 100x(1 - "new diameter"/"standard diameter"). Nearly all tires now have their size shown as "T/A_W" on the side of the tire (See: Tire code (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tire_code)), and the tire's
diameter in inches = TxA/1270 + W. For example, a standard tire is "185/70R14" with diameter = 185x70/1270 + 14 = 24.20 in. Another is "195/50R15" with 195x50/1270 + 15 = 22.68 in. Replacing the first tire (and wheels) with the second (on 15" wheels), a speedometer reads 1 - 22.68/24.20 = 0.0628 times the correct speed, 6.28%, too high. At an actual speed of 60 mph, the speedometer will indicate 60 * 1.0628 = 63.77 mph, approximately.

Hey Guys, I just got a letter this month from Subaru extending my warranty because it too fast. I wasn't huge, I think 36,000 was extended to 37,600 or something.

I have several strange fixes for this...
try tougher motor and tranny mounts...
the bar spanning the towers.
body strengthening...
I am glad to see subaru is respecting the error. For years and years it was hopeless.
my own at 23 years is more correct with a rim 2 inches larger, and diameter as well.
I could guess the net chatters, and leasing etc, blows the lid off this demanding integrity.

This is why I try to stick to 5 over on most roads and 10 over on most highways. Deniability. Just claim 5 less than you were when they ask " do you know how fast you were going back there?" most times they'll just let you slide if you " didn't realize" you were going that fast. Most of the time they don't have you on radar and hope you'll say high enough for a ticket. That's how I see it anyways.

Im pretty sure they calibrate the radar when they get in the car for the shift.....atleast my friend did some sort of calibration when he started his.

The calibration argument is losing steam, as many radars calibrate automatically now, and many stations have LEOs calibrate at the beginning of the shift (as websta said).
The speedometer issue is pretty well known, and the error increases with speed. I seem to remember reading something on NASIOC a few years ago that SOA's official stance is "It's within the allowed margins, and we have no plan to fix it." You can get it adjusted, but I presume it's more of a PITA than it's worth.

Mine's off a few MPH when I hit 65mph or so but that's ok....
I'm running 225/45/17 RE070 compared to the 215/45/17 OEM so they should be a little off any ways :)

I got the same letter... even though I sold my LGT over three years ago.

I know it was really bugging me that day and i needed to rant. I still fine it unacceptable tho. all car companies should be about to get it with in a .5 mph tolerance. especially if i have to work with in .005 tolerances at work.

Wait, you mean that gauge on the right tells you how fast you're going? I thought it was just there to fill up space in the cluster.
On a serious note, does a few mph really matter that much? Just pay attention to exhaust note/engine noise and gear, and add in to the mix feeling out how much your foot is down. Those combined will allow you to gauge speed without having to look at that extra needle.
And besides, we all know when we're driving a bit faster then we should be, and if you see a cop/radar detector makes the slightest blip of something other then X band, then take that foot off the gas, and move for the brakes if need be :D

the class action lawsuit stated 5%, so i think the BTB warranty goes out to 37,600, and the drivetrain to 63,000. it might not sound like a huge deal, unless your the dude that spun a bearing at 61k... those dirty little ****ers will do anything to save a buck. if anyone ever goes to subaru's headquarters, poop in their parking lot.

I have 225/45-17's, according to my GPS my MPH is dead nuts there. I should try a measured mile.
