This isn't a definitive list but I'll update as questions come up.
Timeline of an AutoX
The gates will be open at 8:00am
For events at NHMS, all participants must sign in at the NHMS registration building before going to the parking lot
Registration opens at 8:30 – All participants must check in at registration and sign the release
Technical inspection opens at 8:30am
The course is open for walking at 9:00am
Driver’s meeting takes place at 9:30am
First car off is at 10:00am
Things we check on your car before you may AutoX.
1: Wheel bearings (you can save yourself a depressing morning, check for play before you come).
2: Nothing in the car. No change, no remotes, no floor mats.
3: No leaking fluids. Brake fluid, antifreeze, Oil (God forbid), whatnot.
4: Battery tie down. No bungee cords or duct tape, we want that battery secure.
5: Camera Mounts. This is a new one. Camera mounts have to be SECURE.
6: Solid brake pedal.
7: Throttle return (thanks Toyota).
8: Tires in good condition, no cords.
9: Helmets. Must be approved by the Snell Foundation within the past 10 years which have a readable and genuine SA,M, or K Snell sticker attached to the inside of the helmet. Helmets that meet the FIA Standard 8860-2004 are also acceptable through 2010.
10: Car numbers. BIG IS BETTER. Blue painters tape is your friend.
STAY WITH YOUR CAR UNTIL IT IS TECH'D.
If there is a problem it's much easier to have you there rather than having to chase you down (FYI I will NOT chase you down.) Come early and tech takes all of 2 minutes per car. You want to walk the course and so do we.
Car classing is based on SCCA classing:
Cars are grouped into one of these six (6) classes: If you don't know ask the guy tech'ing your car.
Stock: (street tires – wear rating of 140 or higher) includes SCCA classes: SS. AS, BS, CS, DS, ES, FS, GS, HS
Sticky Stock: (R compound tires – wear rating less than 140) includes SCCA classes: SS. AS, BS, CS, DS, ES, FS, GS, HS
Street Prepared: includes SCCA classes: ASP, BSP, CSP, DSP, ESP, FSP, STS, STS2, STU, STX
Modified: includes SCCA classes: AP, BP, CP, DP, EP, FP, SM, SM2
Race: includes SCCA classes: AM, BM, CM, DM, EM, FM, F125, FSAE
Ladies: requieres six ladies interested at any event, all SCCA clases included.
Things to bring to a race:
1: Sun screen. Seriously. Bring it.
2: Water. Dehydration will make you feel like crap.
3: Comfortable shoes. Working the course means standing.
4: A hat. Baseball cap, pith helmet, cowboy hat, something to get your head out of the sun.
5: Blue painters tape. You use this to make the numbers on the side of the car.
6: Lunch unless you plan on running down the road for food during break.
7: Air gauge. Knowing where your tires are is a VERY useful tool.
7.5: On that note air up your tires before you come. Most DOT tires are happy around 40psi on the course. It's easier to let air out than to put it in at the race.
8: Umbrella. You never know.
For the novices
We have several instructors available to ride with you throughout the day and help you progress. Don't be afraid to ask for help, nobody will think you're stupid.
Try to get a course walk with somebody who has AutoX'd before. They can point out important implements and help it all make sense. Don't count on more than one walk-through with the same person though, they'll want to concentrate on the course at some point. Grab another person and go. Walk the course as many times as you can. The better you can see the course in your head the faster you will be.
Q&A
Q: are pants required like at NED?
A: Shorts are fine for AutoX. Dress for the elements.
Q: How much does an AutoX cost?
A: $50 for non-members and $40 for members. Membership is $20 (pays for itself with 2 events!)
