What's the general time it takes for a gauge cluster? And are the LED's PWM'd so that they can be dimmed?

I can get the conversion done in an afternoon. My last customer came to my house at 3pm and I was done by 7pm.
When I installed the LEDs on the 2000 Impreza RS, they dimmed fine. I have also worked on a 96 Legacy and they have also dimmed. I can check to see if the LEDs dim beforehand on each car i convert to LEDs, but I have a feeling most, if not all, Subarus work fine with the LEDs I use.
I want to say that the only plug in LEDs that would have a problem with dimming over those with a built in voltage regulator. Most premade LEDs bulbs don't have a voltage regulator and just use a resistor install to regulate the current when 12v runs to the LEDs. This is just an assumption, but I'm trying to confirm the info.
What's the general time it takes for a gauge cluster? And are the LED's PWM'd so that they can be dimmed?

So some good news and some bad news. The good news is I can scrape the needle color off from the back. The bad news is a tiny part of the needle extends to the middle of the needle housing, meaning I can reach the needle in the middle to sand off the color.
It's your call, what do you want to do? I'll be able to sand off most of the color, just not all of the color. 5% of the stock needle color will still be there in the middle of the needle housing.:squee:

Night Pics!
Please note the HVAC is a little dim on the top and right side. That is because the OEM light pipes had been browned (read burnt) and cant transmit the light well, but I'm ordering replacements to take care of that. It is in no way an issue with the install, or quality of his work, just crap OEM bulbs that burnt out and a 12 yo car.
Please also note my camera is also about as old as the car is and night pics are hard on it, so detail doesnt show up as well in some pics (there isnt bad light bleed as seen in the pics). Everything shows up clear like in the low dim pic (#2)

Low Dim
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y272/Aczwild/DSC03044.jpg
High dim (again please note the camera can't take good night pics, everything is crystal clear in person)
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y272/Aczwild/DSC03043.jpg
I highly recommend sending your parts to Chris, or making arrangements to bring your car to him as this work is a PITA and he knows what he is doing and how not to eff up. He took great care of my gauges and explained the right and wrong way to do this work. I highly, highly recommend older Impreza owners, even newer owners to have this mod done professionally by Chris as being able to correctly read and decipher gauges is key (especially when doing stupid **** at night) and the OEM wussy bulbs are weak.

Mr bulb Guru, do you have a web page or an e store? I need cool white strips for my headlights. They need to be reliable/long lasting too. What do you have?
The Lighting Guru
08-13-2010, 06:23 PM
I do not have a web page at the moment. I do buy LEDs/LED strips/etc. from various vendors. I can get you cool white LED strips in either 6in. or 12in. lengths for starters. Then you can cut the LED strips to fit the length you need in your headlights.
6in. strips run me $10 each and 12in. strips run me $15 each. Shipping is $5 on every order, no matter the quantity of strips you get.

It's a big (half the size of a dime) Blue LED in the center console. Chris could probably get the red STi one to work with it.

11-14-2010, 04:05 PM
So the one in the sti is red?
2007st3
11-18-2010, 02:08 PM
Still not sure if the one in the 08+ sti center console is red. But I did take the part out today and what appears to be a huge led is just a cover. I think the led under could be changed, but I don't see how the part could be very expensive if in fact it is a red led on the sti. Ill post a pic tonight of it all pulled apart. It was super easy to remove it.
DHGurs
11-18-2010, 02:12 PM
Yeah it is red. Not sure how easy it will be to make work because it works with the STi's stock footwell illumination.
I did the Blue Illumination kit on my WRX and you hooked the footwell lighting into that funky LED. If you remove the little rubber cover it becomes much brighter too.

The part is actually red vs. the blue one that comes with the WRX.

Do the red LED pictures you have do them any justice? I had an 05 sti and I loved the look of the cluster. Do the converted GC clusters look anything like that in person? I currently have a 98 cluster with JDM overlay and working DCCD for my swap. I really would like the red. The other thing I'm concerned with is the LEDs at night. I know they dimm, but how much? Bright lights at night really mess with my eyes. I usually have my stock lights dimmed half way at night.
I've got a center gauge pod with 2 autometer Z series gauges. They have a standard interchangeable red/green bulb so i could probably LED those too. I still need to order my wideband. If I go with red leds then I want to order the aem wideband. If I go with the stock green look, I'd go with the innovate lc1 wideband which is about $100 more...
Has anyone in Vermont had their cars done? I'd love to see these in person.
Thanks! - Charlie

The pictures of the red cluster I have does it pretty good justice, but not enough. The red is a nice full red, not orangish like the pictures display them to be.
They dim pretty well, but the lowest setting is a little bit brighter than the OEM setup. I can adjust the brightness of the lighting to attend to your liking though.
Aczwild had a conversion done by me and he lives in VT, but he had his converted to white, not red. Try sending him a PM. Pics of his cluster:

Thanks, I sent him a PM. Hopefully he lives near by. Are the leds you use capable of being dimmer than the suby dimmer can make them? I wonder if I was so solder in the right resistor between the suby dial and the leds if I could get the lights to dim a little more. I like them bright during the day. Also what about the suby clock in the top left corner. Are you able to make that red at all?
The Lighting Guru
12-23-2011, 10:49 AM
You basically have the same idea as I do for dimming, but it would probably be best you see his cluster. When you start adding resistors, you can achieve the effect of making it more dim, but you also sacrifice brightness.
The clock can also be made red, but it's a little more tricky to do than the rest of the cluster. Thanks, I sent him a PM. Hopefully he lives near by.
Cant remember if I ever sent the response (remember typing it, just cant remember if I hit send and I purged my PM's).
You shouldnt have a problem with the intensity, on full on it was pretty bright, but with the dimmer you can crank it down to a very nice subtle level.
