I had some scratches on my gauge cluster plastic shield thing...

Somebody told me I could get rid of some of the pitting and scratches on my headlights by using car wax on them. After some car wax on my headlights and it working fairly well, I decided to try it on the gauge cluster. It worked great! No more scratches... you can also use it on your radio faceplate to get rid of those scratches.

Just passing on some useful information.

I used Mothers carnuba wax... I don't know if you want to use any wax with cleaner or abrasives in it.

Wow, thanks for the tip! I was dusting my car and using a toothbrush to gently remove the dirt near the bottom, and somehow I left a long scratch. I was pretty pissed that the plastic was so easy to mark up. I'll definitely have to try this.

If you take a razor and lie it flat onthe scratch and just cut off the overhanging plastic the scratches are far less visible, even after the waxing, those overhangs just outline the scratch and if you get rid of them the scratch will be almost invisible.

wet-sanding does the trick and it stays in better shape longer
(headlights that is) then you can wax them if you'd like.

2 year bump

thanks for that post on the cluster glass. That pisses me off that its so easy to mare up. when i bought mine the dealer had wiped it down with windex and it just did a number on the glass like it was acid or something..

They do make a plastic polish. I've used it with great success with the cluster "glass". It will work on plastic headlights as well.

Well the scratch is basically causing distortion, due to depth of the scratch I believe, so filling it in, will cause less distortion, although you'll still have the plastic hangnail, unless you use a blade and cut it off.

In cases of light scuffing, as opposed to a gouge, applying a layer of WD-40 will clear things up. You will have to repeat this about every 2-4 months, but it's cheap, fast and effective.

I actually just filled a scratch with wax on my Z1000 cluster. You can't even tell there was a scratch while sitting on the bike.

Thanks for the info

Meguiar's makes a good product called ScratchX that is made for clear plastics. It's more of a polish, so any deep scratches won't be polished out. All you need to do is puff it in and wipe it off. Plus I believe it applies a layer of protectant as well.
