I find this service very beneficially to Subarus boxer design with some mileage on them. It makes a big difference, and excessive carbon build up can really hurt when tuning ignition timing.

I find this procedure clears up alot of subaru stumbles, idle issues, and overall just runs extremely better.
However seafoaming a 100k mile Honda, tends to result in 0 smoke. Clean burning motor.

what is "the desired amount of seafoam"???. after the procedure is done and you idle the car at the end, how long do you want to idle before you take it out on the road?

I'd do a half can at least, pour the rest in the gas tank.
Once it's done sucking all the fluid in, shut the car off let it sit for 10 minutes.
Turn it back on and let it rip.

New plugs afterwards, right? What if you have NGK iridiums, i've heard they clean themselves up...

depending on what size can you are talking about. It had a chart on the side of the container as to how much is suggested for each use and per how many units of fuel, oil, yatta yatta.

Each car has it's own set of needs for carbon removal so it can't be sure on quantity. Some will stop smoking after a very little amount.
We aren't ingesting it in the oil though (which you can do, works fine, but change within 100 miles)
Plugs I haven't had a problem with if the car is really really really dirty it is possible to foul the plugs.

I understand there are some newer containers, I am referring to the original can style.

friend just dropped off a bottle that looks like an old coke bottle, so definitely go by the quantity on the bottle as all may not be the same.

If not this weekend, I will be doing this to the Impreza on Monday. It was a blast to do to the Festiva, ripping it around and it looked like it was on fire!

Def helps with tuning!! We did mine and then tuned with Bren and he said my car loved everything he threw at it!! We threw more boost and my car just ate it up! Absolutly no knock what so ever!! So happy i did that before the tune!

Let it idle while putting it in, however get it under load (not free revving) and push the seafoam and old carbon out of the car. Obviously make sure coolant temps and oil pressure (at least 5 minutes of running prior) before beating on it.

Thoughts on if this is needed on lower mileage cars? (20k) I'm heading down to see you in the morning, and I've cleaned my MAF, topped off my oil, and added some Techron fuel system cleaner to the fuel. But don't think I will have time to seafoam this evening.

Needed on all subaru's no matter the mileage.

what does seafoam do to the octane rating of gas?
say you fill your tank with 12 gallons of gas and put in 12 oz of seafoam - then run the tank down to an 1/8th and re-fill the tank. there will be a residual amount of seafoam still in the system. if you went to get a tune with residual seafoam what affect would you be looking at? i'm sure there would basically be no affect, but i'm still interested in what it does to the gas.
thanks.
i suppose i'm just wondering if increase, decreases, or has no material change on the octane rating of the gas it's mixed into. i have other stupid questions where this came from...

What we are discussing above is seafoam in the combustion chambers, not so much the gas.
But some tuners (clark turner) have reported seafoam in the gas tank effecting making the car easier to tune, otherwise increasing the octane and allowing an additional degree of timing. I have no evidence of this.

so if we were to get a tune from you, what would be your recommended sequence leading up to it??? (between oil change, spark plug change, seafoam and so forth???) especially wondering as im planning on getting a tune from you in the next couple of weeks!

BG @ BrenTuning

Yes, no need to have it in the tank for tuning. Just to clean things out prior to tuning.

understood. but in post #5 you had said to pour the remainder in the tank. just wondering if there would be any ill affects to a tune if there were a diluted amount of seafoam still in the tank.
thanks for your response.

Was VERY surprised at how much smoke billowed out of my 08 with 20,000 miles on it.
But I'll be damned it that in conjunction with a MAF cleaning didn't help it run better.

It helps, works similar to how techron works. For cars who injectors are in the 90%+ range it's best to keep them clean :D

So i just seafoamed the WRX and the SVX.
Wrx not much smoke at all.
SVX lots and lots and lots of smoke. Ran it for like 10 minutes, then when up and down the road. parked and let it run for another 10 minutes and its still smoking like crazy.
But it sound and feels like its running better and the fuel/air gauge seems to be normal now.
Still more stuff to work on on the svx. Like find out were all the oil keeps going too. Going to try replacing the pcv valve.
I removed one of the oil vapor lines and did not feel any vacuum. I had to use the brake booster line to get the seafoam in.

Just did mine with 60k miles, I had my whole block in a smog for a half hour. Driving around people were pulling over cause they couldn't see. But the car exhaust is so much richer, and the car has a whole new pep to it. And it idles alot smoother!

don't go backwards thoughts like an inline...
an inline lets go of nothing all while never pumping enough.. hence the noise, the vibration, 30 trillion rpms for 30 foot pounds... the jackhammering and brain melting that never ends for long term run.
if you do need to seafoam the inline rice? take the head off and clean it manually..
a boxer on the other hand lets it all go realtime.. suck in crap, it poops it out.. every...single exhaust stroke...
that is the way the sideways cylinders function. Surprised to see this statement coming from a tuner... weirdo.
and most of all, if you are in state that allows it... tune in the exhaust civilized and stop EGR recycling.. no headaches for years to come, and even self cleanses.
(I have run both designs into high miles maine)...I will never own an inline again, unless it is an old mercedes diesel.
I can't see the pictures :(
either can i.

Trace a line from the brake booster to the IMF. If the line is long enough to fit in the can then you don't need an extension.

So I tried the whole seafoam thing, about 1/3 pint(vacuum). Didnt get much smoke, only about as much as a kettle(I know it's steam) for about 30 seconds. Car has 50k on it and it threw a P0171 code. I cleared the code and hopefully it doesn't come back. Anyone else run into this problem?:unamused:

The code didn't come back on after I cleared it!! Btw...forgot to mention that I stalled it out twice while sucking up the seafoam. I'm thinkin that's what prob. triggered the light!! Bren, I'm pretty sure there's no leak because I haven't done anything to the car recently. I'm just wondering if anyone else got that code w/o stalling. :)
