so my dads FXT has been getting the good ol gas cap/evap system code P0457.. he's checked the gas cap and reset the ecu a few times and pulled the code with a reader. I told him to check the lines to the evap canister, check his gas cap and make sure its not rubbish and to check his gas filler neck from inside the fender well for loose connections and such.

anything else that could be wrong or causing it?

If you see a news paper article "Dumb ass kid dies in Blue subaru in gas fire" then you'll know its me

in addition to what you said, tell him to make sure the gas cap clicks at least 3 times when closes it

check out the evap vacuum hose connectors around the inlet pipe, that usually sets it off.

thanks bren!

and someone that he works with told him "the charcoal turns into a particulate and blocks the valves, causing the code"... I was always under the impression that there werent any valves in that system?

I have had this twice in the past month or so. But it was once about a month ago, and then once just a few days ago, so hopefully it's no biggie

I helped hero fix his, but it was a common impreza thing where the seat frame chafes the wire going to the vent valve. the foresters didn't have the issue, but check under the rear seat anyways. also, you can hook up the green connector under the dash, turn on the key and listen/feel if the vent valve is working.
