So i just bought my 02 wrx and its been stilling for a month, because i have not had the time to get it registered and all that, and so when i did get around to it and take it out, the engine light comes on. so i go back home and get out and it smells like oil, i pop i hood, thinking i may have blown a gasket, yet i saw no oil anywhere around, so i turn the car back on and the smell is coming out of the exhaust. just wondering if anyone has any clues to what it might be.

if you have blue smoke comming out of your exhaust then you have an internal oil leak. Also, have you checked your oil levels? Another possible source could be a broken axel boot. i thought i had an oil leak becauuse i could smell burning oil once but never saw a leak. later i noticed grease on my down pipe and saw a hole in my boot. i sprayed grease all over the engine and pipes

First thing you need to do is pull the code from the car to see what the fault/faults is/are. If you don't have a code reader or don't know anybody with one, Autozone does this service for free. Just remember to have a pen and paper handy as the dimwits behind the counter usually won't tell you much about what the code means, so come post it back here and google it and such.
