View Full Version : RI State troopers have plate recognition..

I went to recertify for my RI Emission and Safety inspector license last week and found out some disturbing news.
There are four trooper cars with a new system that reads all the license tags in a 360 degree view, any plate it can see and read gets run thru DMV automaticly and your life history gets raped. All cruisers are expected to have the system by the end of 2010.
Here is the bad news; Any plate frame, dealer frame or custom frame, is an automatic $85.00 fine. NOTHING can be on or around the plate, including clear covers, that could interfere with the device reading the numbers.
Looks like big brother is watching.

for the plate frame, its been a rule in CT for a while. Nothing can cover the plate at all.
For the licence plate scanning, they have been planing this for a while.
Didn't know about them rapeing my life history.. I wonder if it will hurt

The plate covers are illegal in NH, dont know about the frames. I used to fail people all the time for the clear or tinted covers.

90% of the time when a cop is behind for more than 2 minutes he's run your plate.

Yes but,
This system is all automatic. If you are in Dunkin Doughnts drive thru and the system spots your plate it will run the tag number. :unamused:

IDK, if you lived in RI you might understand. Crime pays around here and the government has the monopoly on crime.

tip 2
if a cop is riding your ass with the lights not on or anything... he or she is looking to make you do something stupid to pull you over (one of the things i hate that cops do.)

Thats when you slam on your breaks and get them for tailgating  BTW, isn't there a spray of some sort that you can put on your plate that prevents the camras from reading them? i heard about it being used in mass and how speed camras cant get plates with the spray on them.

I think mythbusters cracked the spray and speed cameras in general a few years ago. Nothing even blurred the pics. As for the plate-reading, I think that's bullsh** personally. If I'm minding my own business and I get driven by and they see that I have an unpaid parking ticket or something menial and then get my balls busted? That sucks..

Uconn used this all the time on spring weekend to stop and check for drunk driving.
Then at graduation, the give you a plate frame. :unamused:

Why I stay away from Uconn.. I am 10 mins away, and I NEVER go there
As for cops tailgaiting, there was a discussion on my old forum about this, and a few police officers that where on there chimmed in.
No one would respond to my question
"I appriciate your input on this matter, but do you think its right for a cop to tailgate me and endanger my life, and those that are on the road? There is no reason for you to be a foot off my bumper"
I think it ended up getting locked, like most threads on there..
I dont see any issues with this at all
Though RI troopers can be nasty I hear.
Then agian piss off any police officer, and am sure they are going to try to make your life a living hell.

As long as the scanner also sees my Rhode Island Fraternal Order of Police badge on my plate, I'm OK with this.
That has scam written all over it. I wouldn't trust the govt to run something like that. Sounds too much like something out of 1984. The front plate will be tough but I wonder if you could get some high output LEDs that would really light up the reflective-ness of the plate and screw with the camera's gain at night.

RI cops can be bad! its kinda like invasion of privacy, the covers are one thing, but running any plate that happens to be in front of this system.. thats a little overboard imo

"Automatic" as in a ticket being automatically mailed to you if the software thinks it sees a frame as it reads the plate? If so, I see massive possibilities for errors.

I hate to tell you but it's not an invasion of privacy at all. There is no expectation of privacy as they are issued by tue government and not to mention in plain view. Any cop can run any plate at anytime, as long as your not doing anything illegal, have outstanding warrants, and your vehicle reg/inspection is up to snuff you have nothing to worry about.
This just has revenue for he state written all over it. I assume it's to fish for expired registrations, stickers, and licenses. As well as warrants which the towns make a few bucks off.

They do have those. Just most departments don't have them. It's an expensive system and I'd say they have to go through some paperwork before authurizing use and more afterwards.

well they do have a spike strip version
Lays out like a spike strip and a prod sticks up and the idea is the car runs this over the prod hits something metal and sends a huge shock to the car which will fry its computer.
I think only certain states are allowed to use it and like you said probably need to go through various higher up officers for the right to use it
I've never seen the spear version like shown in 2fast 2furious cause it just didn't exist or atleast for a long time if your right. But it was funny watching tuner guys like "OH **** THEY GOT THOSE!!"
Seraphinwolf
05-22-2010, 09:54 AM
Ricers that is anyways. Then again most tuners in 03' pretty much were what would now be reffered to as Ricer.

Run flats FTW against spike strips, LOL.
I'm not a law breaker here but the cops piss me off lately. I hate the constant radar they have running all the time. There has to be some type of health hazard with having doppler radar spewing at you every cop you pass, or for miles as they follow us to run tags.
A guy on LGT.com wanted to make a lidar counter measure that would fire a beam back at the laser gun and burn it out. After a while, others convinced him something that strong would probably fry the officer along with the unit. Probably not a good idea!
im_so_blue
05-22-2010, 10:52 AM
health hazard? cops actually worry about that?
i mean my own uncle went to a 80 something year old man's hospital bed pretty much almost dead just to hand him a ticket of some sort and walk out. (and yes i know my uncle can be a ******* sometimes)

Are you trying to say the radar is a health hazard to passing motorists?
How about the guy sitting in the car with it for 8 hours a day.

with my job, I shall  all over anyone who's worried about radar being a health hazard. its not. especially with my line of work only increasing the risk of health issues later in life by .01%

I deserved it. he didnt let me off (he had a fierce mustache, I was DEF in trouble!! :spin:) every time they let me off, I made sure to thank them very politely and be a gentleman for giving me a shot to not be a di** while driving. but damn would I brag every time I got off (thats what she said?).. sorry.....

I just broke my ten year no ticket streak by getting 2 in the span of a few months. One of which is being fought though.
Apparently I failed to yield because I merged at 65 and the cop I pulled in front of was doing 85 or so without his lights on and couldn't be bothered to slow down or move over. :unamused:

In NH, you can't have the covers, those are illegal, you can have the frame, but it can cover the word NEW HAMPSHIRE, but you can cover the rest. Which blows cause my Perrin frame leaves everything open EXCEPT for New Hampshire. I'm a rebel and I rock it anyways, I also have never worn a front plate and I'm not inspected.
The inspection will probably **** me someday, but I'm constantly getting warnings about the no front plate. I just keep telling them I just got the car back from the body shop.
As for the system. Las Vegas has had that system for years. There's a method behind it. Your life history doesn't get "raped". The plate gets run and it shows if:
The registered owner is suspended or the plates are suspended/expired
the registered owner has any warrants out against them
the registered owner is a suspect for some sort of crime.
I don't know. Unfortunately I feel that cops are a necessary evil. It just sucks that the patrol level rookies have absolutely nothing better to do than **** with tuners and skateboarders because they got picked on in high school or something.

^^^^yes, that's true also, like a new hampshire cop can't write a mass person because the car isn't inspected in mass, I'm pretty sure its the same if the car is unregistered. I thought about moving to like, Amesbury mass, right on the NH line and then never registering my car again or inspecting it

i love enjoying other states laws.
like if i was to buy a big ass truck which is illegal in vermont to drive but i goto say Nevada which has almost no lift laws i can have all the fun i want :D
nh i can enjoy no seat belt (only state left that doesn't have a seat belt law).
Oh pulski make sure they bring video evidence to prove their point... or well prove your point  some cops kinda get scared when you mention that cause its like they feel you know more then they thought.

Exactly why I liked living in RI for the short period of time that I did... My mailing address was still at my parents house for my project car so the registration was still CT... and no inspection in CT, so I got it tinted to 5%... RI cops can't pull me over for that since they cant enforce a CT law :)
Now that I live in CT... I just have to be a bit more careful wen I drive the car. Most of the time you wont get pulled over just for tint though.
As far as the plate recognition goes... I am all for it... EVEN in my state. Get those f-ers off the road who don't have an inspected or insured or registered vehicle, BEFORE they hit someone and it f's up their car with no fix in sight for them.
If you keep your **** up to date and stay out of trouble and pay tickets you got, OR go fight them if you think they are unfair then you have nothing to worry about... If you start to screw with the system, then sorry you deserve what you get.

I wonder if laser scramblers would interfere with plate recognition.
I knew someone in NH that took a flat head screwdriver to his plate and punched a bunch of small slotted holes in it. From 10 ft away you don't notice but it makes it harder for a camera, etc, to read.

Yeah, I try to look at it this way... Running a plate is not a new ability, the can do that now, but this tool just makes it much easier to do, and can do it on a MUCH larger scale since its quicker. Its really just a tool to assist them in their job, NOT add a new thing to it.
Normally those with no insurance drive around all day long with no issues till they cause damage somewhere or to someone and then cant pay up... Now hopefully those idiots can get caught while their car is sitting at Wal-Mart and they are buying underwear.
If the tool was adding a whole new ability to their job such as giving them the chance to find more dirt on you then um ok I may object, BUT they already have that ability and can get whatever info they want it just takes longer which results in them being lazier and people getting away with **** that hurts someone else later.
