First couple weeks they handle great. 2 months after, blown struts. :unamused:

Not happy, going back to stock then maybe warranty replacment, followed by some isc coilovers

Did you do the lowering springs with stock struts?

They rode horrible, the spring rates weren't matched to the car at all.

Yeah, but they were designed to work with oem struts.

Sidenote: just took them off the car, the strut can be compressed between two hands...

The question is, do they extend after compression?

Weird, I have the same setup. No issues at all; they ride amazing and handle beautifully. I am suprised your struts went out. its awesome that Epic is going to help you out though.

Dan seems really helpful, he wants me to go to subaru tomorrow and check with them and have them call him while im there. He said, the only other issue he has ever had with blown struts was due to defective struts. Both of my struts are unbelieveably empty. I mean i can squeeze them with little effort and they dont retract.

When i was riding with dungleman at the track today we notice the car was hoping terribly. I checked in the lot and saw alot of oil on the struts and nearby locations. The rears look awesome and they feel good still, but the fronts are just useless. It actually feels unsafe at high speeds.

Yea that sounds odd......

I've got the Epics on my 04 and love them. I replaced my HORRIBLY blown rears (and still functioning fronts too) wyth KYB GR2's (or whatever they decided to call them now.) Love the setup. Perhaps the 09's really are that much different?

Robk0000

They arent very different. From what i was told, Epic springs have reimbursed 3 people total because of blown struts. 2 of the cases the struts were faulty the 3rd was due to driving situations.

The 09 fronts struts are nearly an exact copy of previous sti shocks, the differences are in the spring rates. This is why they gaurantee the fitment on oem shocks, they were designed for the application.

ill find out around noon today for my appt.

I recently installed some Epic's on my 07 STI. Overall the ride is OK, it's slightly stiffer than the Prodrives I had before, but the ride height is basicly stock.

I've been working with Dan at Epic to see if the springs I have are out of spec, since according to Rally Sport Direct, where I bought the springs, they drop the front 25mm and the rear slightly less, well, they didn't drop my car 10mm in the front.

Dan has been really cool about everything, I just wanted springs that were going to give me the drop I was looking for, with some tighter handling.

In retrospect, I should have bought RCE Yellow's.

Belknap is covering the struts under warranty due to defect in products. The springs had no involvement in the failure according to the manager. :)

Well my orignal diagnosis was the springs blew out the struts. But i was told incorrect by a subaru tech. So...

i like the product, and im getting a very nice discount from them because of this incident. :)

Overall I like the product too. They're not for everybody though as the overall drop is minor and they're slightly stiffer than stock. Great for daily drivers, commuters, places where it snows, etc lol

got the new struts in, and they installed my epic springs for me. lol

The car now rides way better than it did before. Even before i didnt feel like blown struts. I like.

Ive had the Epic lowering springs in my 09 for almost 2 months. it didn't level out the stance, the front still def sits higher than back and rides terrible...car handles better but for CT roads not enough travel from struts and i can feel the front and rear slam over mild imperfections in the road. I learned my lesson and purchasing coil overs soon!

prolly going to order these eventually.

Way cheaper than bilsteins

I posted a link in the "stink eye" thread. There is a special on shox.com where you can pre-order them for $580.

I can't directly link them, but check it out, that's damn cheap while it lasts.

Weird, mine sits nice and level. As for a rough ride, wait til you get the coilovers. They will be as stiff, if not stiffer.

Robk0000

If you think the springs ride rough, you prolly going to regret going to coilovers. I agree with Joe.

I don't feel like my ISC coilovers are rough at all. I can make them rough though! :D

from what a reliable spring/suspensions engineering company says. They are very similar to Prodrive rates. But the #'s cannot be revealed.

the ride is rough from bottoming out the shocks... other than that the ride is nice...i know coilovers will be stiffer but at least they are made to lower the vehicle and still have reasonable suspension travel...but the front def sits higher than the rear and my front shocks sound hammerd when i got over small bumps too.

How do you manage to bottom out the struts on epic springs? It's only like 1"-1.3" drop??

Robk0000
06-25-2010, 09:40 PM
The "bottoming out" you are feeling is from the springs. Bottoming out the struts would make a loud thump and a very hard bump. If you have those symptoms maybe you have blown struts.
