So my cogged pulley for my timing belt decided to freeze up Saturday and shear off the bolt head. It then proceeded to break through my timing belt cover and get stuck, melting into my radiator fan shroud. I will be trying to fix my car Thursday to have it running to get to the photoshoot meet on Sunday.

I think 5 people have told me this. I turned the cam gears with a wrench and didn't feel any rubbing. I'm doing a compression and leak down test Thursday to determine bent valves and other such mishaps.

I dont know anything about timing belts. Why would the valves bend? Im curious because I have 118k on my stock belt and Im trying to find the time to change it out...I'd rather this didnt happen before i get the chance, but if it did..what am i in for?

squeethebee

valves would bend if the belt snaps cause it keeps the pistons and valves moving in sync so the DON'T touch, because at different times they share a common space.

Get on that belt man, they recommend doing them at 105k I think.

Oh, and if it snaps on you, either a complete rebuild of your heads, or buying used heads, pulling the motor and buying headgaskets and all other assorted gaskets you will need, new fluids, AND all the stuff you would have had to do anyways if it didn't pop.

Do timing belt, tensioner, idler pulleys, water pump and maybe even an oil pump.

Sorry for the threadjack chris!

from what i've read the rs does have an interface motor so yes the valves will more than likely need to be replaced. If you want this number 742-2000 and ask for steve. He could tell you what the job would run and he's in somersworth. Heads up stems run about 20 a peice and you'll probably need all 16 and there's a lot of labor involved

His valves may not be bent..the heads seem fine even when the block is at TDC. I know Mike from Tuning Alliance had his timing belt break 3 times on his WRX and his valves never bent..so it all comes down to luck.He is already setup with my machinist to build his spare heads and the EJ257 block that he bought off me. He got a great deal with machine work. We will find out on thurs when I put everything back together for him and do a compression test ;) Then onto me fabing up that rotated kit for ya bud!! :D

time for an 11mm oil pump?
:dunno:

On the oldest subes, I found two holes two drill by the exhaust manifold, I am pondering what the rs has. the sprockets down low, why is heat hanging on that intensely?

given maine and its ethanolism, there is still a means to conquer beyond the average crap.

Look at it as not just a freak occurrence, but to find things to enhance around it. That will work for every car for a looong time.:)

It is a crap shoot if you touched any valves. Those damn idler and cog pulleys are cheap as hell. I recomend to change all the idlers and the cog pulley EVERY timing belt change. Subaru uses some cheap bearings in those things. My 83,000 mile motor is apart and you should feel how gritty/rough those pulleys are when they spin.

Evoeater
05-05-2010, 04:23 PM
He was quoted almost 400 bucks for all the new idlers and cog gears by manch subaru..def not cheap

apkarian100
05-05-2010, 09:46 PM
So the cogged pulley that came off was attached to the water pump via a bolt. The bolt head popped off and bent the bolt. Rather than try to wrestle the bolt out, I went and bought a new water pump, being as mine has 138k on it. I also bought a new thermostat and cogged pulley. I hand spun all the other pulleys and they spin pretty freely, so I won't replace those. The car will be reassembled tomorrow and then I can find out if I have more issues. (Cross fingers for the best)

shoulda got a forward facing (turbo) water pump. then you could have bought the turbo manifold from me and.....yeah baby!

apkarian100

The cogged pulley itself was pretty expensive, near $80. The $400 price quote was including the timing belt tensioner, which was by itself $150. I got all of them, with an STI oil pump and a new water pump for 500. They are like $60 a piece.

Okay, so, yah, I have bent valves. 3 of 4 cylinders read 0 compression. So now I'm rebuilding the heads a little with some upgraded valves and new cams. :)

Parts:
-Delta 1500 SOHC cam grind
-Delta stainless steel nitrated valves

I started on the engine tear-down today with help of Evoeater.

Really? I know my tensioner without pulley (96 2.2) was $150, I thought my WRX style one was cheaper. Oh well, good luck man, hopefully you have her back soon.

I believe I told you this a while ago on IM and that it isn't a big deal if you break that bolt off :)

Glad it's all coming back together.

Well the car turned over nice and it was running great, but I had oil spewing out of weird areas. A little investigation and I figure out that I put ob the headgasket reversed, blocking an oil passage way to the heads. I'm pretty mad at myself for this. So looks like I'm just going to give myself a breather for a week and take apart and reassemble things after that.

This sucks...

thats fu**in harsh. BUT, good side is you know you can do it, now. and you know the engines happy. so when you take care of that little.. uh.. issue... the car will be even happier with you! keep up the good work, chris!

Been there, done that! Sucks man! Sorry to hear :(
A friend and I installed one backwards late one night. Such a sinking feeling ... :(

Now you know how to do it though! Shouldn't take you long to correct it :)

And, you probably know. But you can't re-use your gaskets. You need new ones :(
